It was opened in 1882 to much fanfare and even a public holiday, but by 1893 the city's immense population growth (it increased by over 50% in just 10 years) meant that the library was already too small for purpose. A large extension with a new frontage and entrance was built and opened in 1896. Still, I think we should probably have a revolution and bring back this level of decadence to public buildings.
