      It was nice of her to come over when he felt so ill, but he was concerned she’d catch whatever he had. Still, he was in no mood to scold her or send her off. In fact, he could barely lift his head without the room spinning. So there he lay, under two thick blankets with a once wet cloth on his head, occasionally sniffling and trying to stay awake whilst she was over. “Yeah, peachy.” He was TRYING to be funny, but it didn’t exactly come across that way, not with his throat dry and nose blocked. He was truly just a mess.

      How many times had they gone through this. Not everyone lived for their own happiness, and maybe for once the ace SHOULD consider his own feelings. But to follow along, playing the supporting role; THAT made him happy. He couldn’t understand why Oikawa couldn’t see that. These deep, meaningful conversations always cropped up on their way home. If they had lived further apart, maybe there wouldn’t have been the need, but then they might not have wound up as close as they currently were. “I am happy. I’ll admit it, I didn’t like volleyball at first.. but you were so keen on playing and my only real friend at the time and I thought if I didn’t play too, I’d lose you.” There was a long pause that followed, words he’d only THOUGHT of before now slipping out on their own. Trying not to think on it, to brush it aside, he continued. “I’m happy supporting the team whatever way I can. I’m happy being the ace and playing beside you. It won’t last forever and we might end up on different sides of the court. But either way, I’ll be happy. So get over it, Shittykawa. You didn’t force me into playing. I chose to play.”

      It wasn’t as if the ace NEEDED the pep talk, but it did help. That shadow of doubt that tried to set in was forced away by his kouhai’s words. Make them remember. He didn’t need to have the analytical mind of Oikawa. All he needed was to be him, to be the pillar of Kitagawa Daiichi, the ace that the team relied on. If he did that, nothing could go wrong. So he took in a deep breath, eyes drifted from the ball to the other end of the court. This MATTERED. This one serve told onlookers whether he was good enough to join the prestige Aoba Johsai. Up went the ball and down it came with a loud SLAP. It sailed easily over the net, hit the other side and launched off against the back wall. The speed and force was like nothing he had ever managed before; the control unlike anything he experienced before. He couldn’t help the grin spreading on his lips. If he didn’t SEEM like the type to be great, then he’d make them remember in other ways. Through brute strength he’d force his way through.

      He had to think about it. There were MANY answers he could have given, but only one was the most satisfying. Sure, he’d been saying no to a multitude of stupid ideas all morning, but it didn’t mean he couldn’t say anything else. So, with a deep breath, he made strong eye contact with his friend and with the blankest poker face he could muster, uttered one word. “Yes.”

      He didn’t like to admit he was struggling, since he considered himself somewhat of a pro after all the years of bandaging Oikawa’s fingers. But he supposed it was a lot trickier when it came to his own, finding the difficulty in wrapping with only one hand and having no way to properly secure it. So as Yachi approached and offered, he couldn’t just say no. Letting the mess of bandages fall off his fingers, no where near the tightness they were SUPPOSED to be, he held out his hand. “Yeah.. could do with a hand.” There was silence. He wanted to slap himself.

     His eyes slowly move to the item that had been ACCUSED of such villainy and he honestly can’t understand why it was so important to announce it in the middle of the store. The eyes that fell on them didn’t bother him that much, he just wanted to UNDERSTAND. “That’s..” Surely she knew, but he just wasn’t entirely sure. Maybe she saw something he didn’t. Just maybe. But still. “That’s a lemon.”
