Fear by hobbywriting: A fantastically written slow burn detailing Matt’s recovery with the Avengers after a horrific gang rape. It doesn’t shy away from tough moments and really gives a deep dive into Matt’s fragmented mental state. It’s not an easy road or a short one - the fic is almost finished and clocks in at just under 500,000 words - and is extremely compelling every step of the way.

Dumpster Fires Verse by deniigiq: deniigiq is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. They write absolutely fantastic Team Red (Daredevil, Spiderman, and Deadpool) stuff that will make you roll on the floor with laughter one moment and shatter your heart the next. I recommend pretty much anything they write.

Double Blind by smilebackwards: A funny story about Matt fighting with the Avengers and getting an injury that would have blinded him had he not been already blind. Cue the Avengers tiptoeing around him thinking he’s just taking his newfound blindness really poorly and Matt being all like “It’s okay guys, gimme a few days and I’ll be in fighting shape again!” and them being all like “noOO!”

What Matt Lacks by DJClawson: A rather slice-of-life fic about Matt, his blindness, and his friendship with Foggy. Very nice.

Red In Tooth And Claw by poisonivory: In a world where a select group of the population are Shifters (people who can turn into a specific animal), Matt will have to team up with the rest of the Defenders to save themselves and Foggy from Kraven the Hunter. Featuring occasional!cat!Matt and dog!Danny (and more!)

slipping sideways by Handful_of_Silence: MCU Matt gets transported to the comics verse, where he meets Comics Foggy in Foggy’s hospital bed. Very good characterization, and comics fans will appreciate all the references.

to gaze with undimmed eyes by blackmetaldahlia: A lovely fic with a simple premise: what if Matt’s eyes had to be surgically removed after being splashed with all those chemicals? What would change? Quite a bit, actually! No one can accuse Matt of faking being blind once they’ve seen him literally pop his prosthetics out.

Future Imperfect series by Katbelle: Six years ago, something happened to Foggy because of Matt’s double life as Daredevil, and due to Foggy’s fleeing to California, they haven’t spoken since. Now with Foggy back in New York their paths will unexpectedly cross, only for Foggy to discover that Matt is actually doing pretty well and that his own life is falling apart. I love this series so much and I’m sad it hasn’t been updated in so long.

hold the mic (to this pillar of salt) by throats: No powers AU where the Defenders start a band. Matt-centric. It’s great, just trust me.

Marci Stahl, Avocado at Law by igrockspock: Marci comes to work at Nelson and Murdock and simultaneously tries to figure out wtf is going on with Matt. Great Marci characterization. 

Not Your Damn Daddy by JoeLawson: Stick’s point of view of his relationship with Matt over the years. 

Solar Eclipse by DJClawson: An extremely short but hilarious fic written a year or so ago when there was a big solar eclipse in the continental US. Featuring a hilarious phone call between Danny Rand and Matt, with Luke Cage laughing in the background.

Season Tickets by shuofthewind: An X-Files mashup featuring Matt Murdock told from Darcy Lewis’s point of view. Interesting concept that absolutely delivers.

I Sat and Dreamed at the Foot of Your Bed by patster223: Inception AU where Matt gets Karen and Foggy to help him infiltrate Fisk’s dreams to take him down. I recently reread this fic and realized just how great it was.

Counterweight series by Tam_Cranver: Leverage AU where Matt, Elektra, Karen, and Foggy are professional criminals hired by Claire and Ben Urich to do a job. 

O Stone, Be Not So! by Tam_Cranver: The Defenders switch bodies temporarily. Not crack, and written extremely well. It’s long for a one-shot too, 31,000 words.

Shadowboxing by kristen999: Matt and Steve Rogers bond over boxing, become good friends, and team up to save a missing girl. Could you really ask for more?

40/40 by Jadesfire: I’m just going to write the kinkmeme prompt this was posted as a fill to because it’s hilarious and tells you all you need to know: “Daredevil can fight creatures in the dark. He can fight invisible things. He knows everything happening in the room without even turning his head, and he knows what’s going on in other rooms. We, of course, know that this is because Matt isn’t dependent on his vision at all.The Avengers, on the other hand, conclude that he has some sort of vision-related enhancement (ranging from x-ray vision, to night vision, to infrared - any or all of the above.) They continue to believe this for months. Matt, in return, trolls them over it. “That’s me. The eye guy. I see everything.” “Wow. Look at this view. I wish you guys could appreciate it like I do.”

Sunshine by MomentumDeferred: A Daredevil fic rec list would not be complete without this story. It’s absolutely masterfully crafted, and I don’t say that lightly. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic zombie world of New York City, where Matt and Foggy are desperately trying to stay alive. It’s really long, and such a slow burn, and the characters don’t win easily and there are lasting consequences, and people get hurt and people die and I can’t say enough good things about this fic. It’s so tantalizingly close to being finished but hasn’t been updated in a while. I like to read the side stories as well.

Always Crashing In The Same Car by a_silver_sun: Matt time travels involuntarily. Both funny and heartbreaking, and such an interesting concept.

Rocky Horror Pancake Show by ChuckleVoodoos: Groundhog Day AU in which Foggy has five tries to relive the day the explosions go off in Hell’s Kitchen. He might just learn some secrets about Matt along the way! Don’t let the title fool you - you’re in for a good ride!

Of Monstrous Shape by RosaLui: College Matt, Foggy, and Marci are kidnapped and taken to underground cage fighting ring where Matt will have to fight so they can get help. Way better than I’m making it sound. Featuring creative prose.

Stars and Horns series and Boxer’s Daughter series by RedRowan: Two amazing and long series by RedRowan, the first about alwaysagirl!Matt and Steve and the second about alwaysagirl!Matt and Foggy. 

One Can’t Kiss but Toucan by poisonivory: A hilarious story in which Matt, Foggy, and Karen are cast members at Disneyland. Cameo by grumpy Frank Castle.

It Takes A Village by Beguile: Slow burn take on Matt and Frank’s friendship as Frank slowly nurses him back to health after severely breaking his leg. It’s long (200,000 words!) and epic. 

Opposing Counsel by anonymous: A short kinkmeme fill about two opposing lawyers not believing Matt is truly blind. Reeeallly funny!

Orbiting Planet Matt by shockcity (pcp): Different comics characters musing on their… friendship? with Matt.

Never Rained like It Has Tonight (Or, Twenty Things about Nelson & Murdock, Attorneys at Law) by Tartanshell: The title really says it all. This is a list fic about how deep Matt and Foggy’s friendship runs. The very first one on the list is especially awesome.

Idle Hands by GrayJay: After his accident, Matt was assigned knitting as a form of OT and it stayed with him. It can’t have been inspired by this picture, but it sure is awesome anyway. 

Acts of Deliberate Intent series by DJClawson: Man, DJClawson is awesome. This is a 4-part, 269,000-word series about, well, it’s hard to explain. It starts out being a “Winter-Soldierification” of Daredevil, where Matt was kidnapped by Hand-related human traffickers and dehumanized for a year. It gradually turns into a fix-it hurt/comfort fic, a kid fic, and even (amazingly) an Avatar: The Last Airbender fusion, all without losing writing quality or seeming too over the top. A fantastic juggling act that was carried out to perfection. Highly recommend.

pack up your troubles by sleepyMoritz (Cathers): Post-Defenders, Matt’s lease runs out on his apartment and Foggy and Karen pack it up. Gives you all the feels.

His Heart Is A Place of Safety by BeaArthurPendragon: Matt and Peter Parker’s relationship takes a turn for the worst after Matt suffers a horrific injury. (Don’t worry, everyone’s an adult here.)

Secrets That You Keep by Tokyo_the_Glaive: Hell’s Kitchen is a living entity that favors Foggy and Matt. Fantastic prose.

Everything I’ve Ever Let Go Of by sleepyMoritz (Cathers) and Tillthewheelsfalloff: Matt-centric Defenders graffiti AU. Here’s part of the summary: “A blind ex-junkie, an alcoholic private investigator, a temporarily embarrassed millionaire, and that guy who’s bar burnt down become clandestine street artists to protest rising rents in Hell’s Kitchen.” I absolutely love this story, as I’ve posted before, and think everyone should read it.  

The Killing Game by kristen999: Matt, Frank Castle, and Jessica Jones team up to fight an alien spaceship in the middle of NYC! It’s awesome!!

writing it on my goddamn character sheet by QueenWithABeeThrone: Foggy is the dungeon master in the Defenders’ D&D game. Hilarity ensues. 

Wait, Danny’s A Buddhist? series by DJClawson: Lovely take on Danny’s character. There’s a hysterical moment where Matt learns that Danny is white, having thought he was Asian the whole time.
