I get the sentiment here, hipsters are annoying as shit, but the fact is you don’t know whether or not someone else is actually in need of shopping at thrift stores or not, including artists who own expensive supplies.
My best friend put herself through art school on her own dime and worked two-to-three jobs to do it. She spent years (years) not buying any nice clothing or makeup for herself because every spare penny she earned went towards 1) art school or 2) those “expensive ass markers and notebooks.” She had the choice of buying brand name clothes or getting the high quality art supplies she needed for her education and career. If she’d decided to do both, she would not have been able to eat.
So you’re damn straight she went to secondhand shops. Girl wore cheap jeans and secondhand t-shirts every damn day year after year until she broke even. The nicest clothes she owned were given to her as gifts by others, bought on sale with a shitload of discounts, or found in a stroke of luck at resale shops.
Do white hipsters take up resources that poor people need? You bet. But you also frankly don’t know just from looking who is poor or who is a hipster. You can work against racism without being classist and gatekeeping the goddamn Goodwill of all places.
Not to mention that thrift shops get more clothes than they can ever sell due to fast fashion like seriously google the life cycle of clothes. ^ Same. I used to buy cheap shoes from resale stores and they’d fall apart within one Chicago winter. So I saved up for a while and bought my docs. They’ve now survived hell, high water, and Wasteland Weekend. Those babies are an investment, not a needlessly expensive fashion statement.

growing up poor, wearing secondhand items was just how it was. now i have the means to buy shiny new items but half my stuff is still thrifted or from ebay bc those are valid and resourceful ways to find durable stuff in a sea of shitty made-to-deteriorate brands.
