Here are a few things to try!

n.1 if youve been at your writing station for hours, take a break and breathe some fresh air and get something to drink/eat

n.2 pick a word you like or a word you don't often use, go to an online thesaurus and just look at the related words (synonyms or antonyms, all of it!) and try putting a few in a sentence or two

n.3 open a random book (any book, doesn't even have to be one you love) to a random page and steal the first sentence you land on, not to use it, but to write whatever sentence you think should come next

n.4 make a tiny playlist for just one character, three or four songs that feel like their headspace. listen on a walk and just notice what images or lines pop into your head and jot them down either as you go, or afterward (if you think you'll remember them)

n.5 write the worst possible version of any scene on purpose, yours or from a book or a movie/tv show. overly dramatic, cringy dialogue, purple prose, all of it. give yourself permission to be bad because it removes the pressure, and half the time something usable sneaks in anyway

n.6 set a stupidly small goal, like 50 words, or five minutes on a timer with permission to stop the second it's up. the trick isn't the output, it's tricking your brain out of the "this has to be good" mode that's causing the freeze in the first place

something that has always helped me was finding a song that i vibed with, because i always seem to be able to create storylines for them, even picking an existing character in fiction or media that you like to go with it. Once you get that part of your brain going, try writing out those lines, or just dot points of what you see for that song/character. You dont even have to write them down, just listen and follow whatever comes into your head

Sometimes the issue might also not be self imposed pressure. Sometimes despite being motived one can still not be inspired to write. And I’ve got a couple tricked I use because that’s usually the biggest struggle I have.

Get involved in a new space, be it a fandom, or a community, or a class, or a club. Learning a new skill, reading a new genre, listening to different music, and meeting new people, will not only help break some monotony, but will also give more first hand experience and make better “researched” works.

Go somewhere new. Travel is a sure fire way to get inspo for any art, but that travel could just be to a park in the neighbourhood you’ve never been to. Give yourself time to take it in, no driving past in a car. And you could even do something you wouldn’t usually, like going for a walk in rain for leisure.

Change the scenery, get yourself somewhere interesting. And yeah, sometimes this can be a step backwards for those who struggle to focus, but that’s half the point. If you look up from whatever you use to write and you see a blank boring wall you’re not helping yourself. Go to a cafe, or a library, or a park.

And most of all, if what you’re trying to write has you dreading it, either change the scene/plot, or just jump to a different part of the story and edit it later. You might find that once you’re in the writing groove it’s easier to tackle harder parts.

This includes the start of a story. You’re allowed to begin writing at the climax and work your way to the start.
