Semester Three, Part Eight

For some reason Toshinori decides it's a good idea to put the news on as background noise even after everything with Todoroki's brother. Thankfully today it is just that, something for anyone who's interested to watch and something for everyone else to ignore. Izuku's only half paying attention since Ashido is talking to him about a manga she's reading.

It's about a VAS attack and when they show footage of the Nomu, weird abominations that the Vanguard use, that Ashido freezes up. She stares at the screen and into the eyes of the giant creature, seemingly terrified. But when Izuku asks what's wrong she just says that the Nomu is creeping her out. She starts rambling again but she keeps watching the screen and occasionally glancing to the other side of the room. It takes Izuku a few minutes to realize that she's looking at Kirishima and that he's looking at her too.

Izuku's father hands them the piece of paper that he was poring over when Izuku got to his apartment. Their father says that it's a letter from Kotaro that he left in his will in case they ever reconnected with Sorahiko. It doesn't feel real, that Izuku will be able to read the words of someone gone, someone that could've been an important part of his life.

It starts out strangely, with Kotaro just saying that he doesn't think he's a good person and explaining his view of The Quirk Giver and their family. To him The Quirk Giver was something made up, just a theory that ruined his family. Even worse he blamed all of them, even Toshinori, for abandoning him. It makes Izuku wish that they could reach out and explain everything but Kotaro's died before he was born.

Apparently Kotaro only realized that they wouldn't come back when the news that Nana had died came out and he found out just like everyone else, through the news. Kotaro was alone and angry after that, he lashed out and at twelve he started committing petty crimes just to get back at the world.

It was only when he was arrested and sentenced to community service that his life turned around, he met his wife, Nao. She was volunteering there and she helped him turn his life around and after a few years they were going to college and living together. Things got harder when she got pregnant and decided to keep the baby but Kotaro stepped up. They had the perfect family apparently but the anger of Kotaro's youth returned.

He doesn't say what he did but the fact that something horrible happened is apparent throughout the letter. Kotaro describes raising his children and getting worse and worse, until something snapped. Afterwards he started going to therapy, his therapist was the one who recommended that he write the letter.

When he's done reading they just stare at the letter, wondering what it all means. Izuku knows why his father showed it to him, to give him more information about their family, but it doesn't make sense. It only leaves him with more questions.

The secret warehouse where Hawks is meeting Dabi doesn't have any heating so he's left freezing. Still he walks in, pointing out that Dabi shouldn't smoke as he curses the seasons. Dabi seems a bit annoyed at that but quickly goes back to their usual laidback and slightly deranged grin.

Hawks dreams of non migratory birds while Dabi asks about when the best time to attack the HPSC would be. He answers him before asking for more details, hoping he'll actually get some this time. It's not just because he wants to report everything back to Harada, which he does, he's also grown a bit fond of the Vanguard. It's a relief to learn that it's probably just going to be Nomu. Hawks should and will not analyze that relief, instead he'll just ignore it until it comes back to bite him.

After a little bit of prodding and getting nothing out of him Dabi asks the question Hawks has been expecting for a while, why is he doing this? So Hawks starts on the long winded diatribe about child assassins, it's clear that Dabi believes him. Afterall, who wouldn't?

Sometimes Izuku and Bakugo walk to the train station together, usually in silence but they talk every once in a while. It's one of the days where they aren't talking, that is until Izuku stops walking. They just noticed Todoroki so he waits for him to catch up, much to Bakugo's annoyance.

Semester Three, Part Seven

Tori doesn't know why he's doing this. He should only be spending time with the Todoroki family if he's going to extort them but he feels the need to check up on the kid. When he was young Tori had been a bit jealous of the Todoroki's but now it's the opposite, even if half their kids weren't dead he would pity them.

So he waits outside their home after making sure that Endeavor isn't home and hopes that his excuse is good enough. It makes sense, he'd started to befriend the family again and it's probably weirder that he hasn't visited sooner.

Eventually Shoto opens the door and invites Tori inside, asking if he wants to join Shoto for dinner. The air is still and the house seems lifeless, Tori wonders if it's always been like this. He pushes any thoughts aside as he tries to convince himself that this is for the mission. He's just trying to find enough information and proof to get money out of Endeavor, that's why he's doing this.

When Tori tells Shoto that he talked to Rei he freezes. Rei mentioned that they had started to reconnect after the funeral but they've clearly not made much progress. Still Shoto pushes back, saying that he's fine and that even if he isn't it doesn't matter. Tori raises an eyebrow but doesn't question it, god he's going soft.

Exam season has started and everyone is prepared for hell, even Izuku. When he gets to lunch after their first test he sees everyone looking a bit dead inside, except for Ashido who's praying for tomorrow's test. When Izuku asks when she became religious she flips him off. They all chat for a few minutes before Izuku asks what they think the heroics test will be.

Iida clears his throat and Izuku perks up as he starts to explain. Even Todoroki and Yaoyorozu seem interested which tells them how secretive this thing is. If Iida's right they'll be a battle like the one at the Sports Festival, with two students and a hero. Everyone lets out a groan because this is going to be really annoying.

It's very rare for Toshinori or Izuku to text each other during school, actually Izuku doesn't think it's happened before. So he immediately texts Ashido that he won't be able to make it to lunch yet and goes to Toshinori's room. The text was ominous, just saying to meet Toshinori so Izuku prepares for the worst.

Their stomach is twisting into never seen before shapes by the time that he makes it there. He's not sure whether things are made worse or better when he figures out the reason, there's something wrong with Bakugo. He's standing in the middle of the classroom, arms wrapped around his chest and staring at the ground. When Izuku opens the door he turns to him with an emotion that can only be described as suffering on his face.

For a minute they just stare at each other before Bakugo walks over and sits on the ground next to Izuku, with them quickly joining. Bakugo whispers something that doesn't make sense, that he flunked today's test. It doesn't make sense, Bakugo is smart, he always has been and he's never had to worry about grades.

After a minute of rambling about how he definitely failed he says something that sticks out. He says that Izuku's going to be a great hero someday and Izuku hates him for it. Even if they don't like Bakugo they know that he's going to be a hero, he has the same passion and spark Izuku has. It doesn't make sense that he can seem so defeated.

Izuku tries to reassure him that they'll both be great heroes because he really believes it. They're both hard wired for it and if anyone can do this it's him, Izuku doesn't understand how he can be so hopeless when it's so obvious. He listens as Bakugo mutters that he'll get through it because what else is there and Izuku understands.

Uraraka and Izuku go to the building that Toshinori told them to as Izuku wonders why Toshinori was grinning like a maniac. As all the groups head to their stations Izuku wonders what's going on, he must be planning something.

He only gets it when the door opens and they walk in to see a figure on the other side, staring at them menacingly. Or really it's just an attempt to be intimidating since it's Sorahiko. Uraraka seems spooked so it's probably just that Izuku can't be scared of someone who's called himself a board game wizard.

Sorahiko doesn't give them any warning, he just leaps forward and nearly kicks Izuku in the head. The only reason he doesn't is that Izuku dodges, grabbing his foot and throwing him against a wall. If it were any one else he'd be worried by the impact but Izuku knows that Sorahiko's tough enough to do this. Uraraka complains that she should've married rich and Izuku smiles as Sorahiko gets back up.

He's brutal and every time they try to get a hit in he manages to twist it back around on them. Izuku's not surprised by the cruelty in his fighting style, just by the swiftness. He's heard Sorahiko whine for hours about how bad his back or legs are but it doesn't seem to affect him at all. Just as he's about to break their leg Izuku twists out of Sorahiko's grasp and jumps up, letting his Quirk take him to the ceiling.

Sorahiko seems a bit giddy as he joins Izuku, wrestling him in the air as Uraraka watches from below, there's not much she can do since her Quirk is only external. After a minute she yells that she's going to try something before ordering Izuku not to let her die. He glances away from his struggle to see her touching her shoes and bursting up to meet them.

Sorahiko gets him in a headlock as she reaches them, Izuku quickly grabs her hand and she yelps as she tries not to hit her head on the ceiling. She asks how they're supposed to win this thing and he shrugs before coming up with an idea. Izuku's not very good at whispering but Sorahiko's going a bit deaf and has moved back so it doesn't matter.

When he flies towards them again Uraraka dodges his attack and grabs his wrist, slamming him into the ground. Izuku watches as he glares at them, struggling to even stand as the change in his acceleration forces him to stay down.

Semester Three, Part Six

Izuku looks around the hotel room and realizes that he's too tired to do anything really. He wishes that he could get stressed and just get it all out but he can't, all he can feel is this dread in his stomach. So he just sits on the unfamiliar bed and try to do anything, he does that until he gets a call.

It's from Sorahiko and he doesn't waste any time on greetings or condolences. Izuku's grateful for that, eagerly listening to the plan that Sorahiko and Toshinori came up with. They're really backed into a corner but Toshinori still has a lot of connections. Apparently he's going to pull some strings to fake all the related documents in case anyone searches but there's more.

They'll be setting up an interview where he can go over the script that he's been using all year. It's Izuku's worst nightmare, people could pick him apart and he doesn't even know who they'd be doing the interview with. Still he asks who he has in mind.

Unfortunately Izuku has to go back to school when the weekend is done. It's been a long few days of police interviews and listening to his parents' whispered arguments. Besides that it's just been worrying and trying to ignore how much information of his he saw on his favorite forums, he definitely won't be checking those for a while.

Toshinori's going to handle setting up the interview that will hopefully be about Yamada which makes things a little bit better. It's someone he knows so he hopefully won't be questioned too aggressively, he really doesn't want to slip up.

When he gets to class everyone is staring at him which is something he's realized he'll have to get used to again. Izuku's been mostly normal for nearly a year but life just had to ruin it like this. The bell rings just as the door closes behind him and he ignores everyone, just going to his seat as he feels everyone's concern and confusion.

As he sits down Bakugo passes him a note that simply apologizes for all of this. It's nothing, they're not friends again just because Izuku mostly isn't scared of him anymore. But to him it's everything, he knows he'll never get an apology so he might as well take this.

When Yagi walks into the teachers lounge everyone quiets down, he usually stays in his classroom. He zooms in on Hizashi, Shota and Nemuri, specifically Hizashi, much to his discomfort. Sure All Might was a great hero and he seems like a nice guy but the way he's staring into Hizashi's eyes makes feels like he can see his soul and real eye color.

When Yagi says he has a huge favor to ask of Hizashi he's pretty sure it's either going to be a cult or a pyramid scheme, or both. His theories are proved wrong when Yagi continues, he wants to see if he could do something to help out Midoriya.

Hizashi says that he'll see what he can do and Yagi smiles more genuinely than he's ever seen before. It's weird, this guy who's been on screen since Hizashi was a kid is not only his coworker but also so different from anything he could've imagined. Yagi's skinner than a flower stem, suprisingly awkward and great at accidentally annoying Shota.

Yagi bows a bit too deep and Hizashi glances at Shota who'll probably know what's going on better than he would. Hizashi doesn't know Midoriya or Yagi particularly well but Shota might. He doesn't look too surprised by any of this and Hizashi mentally flips him off.

Despite valuing people, including heroes, being genuine more than anything else he isn't too good at it himself. He's constantly hiding his annoyance at Shota and Nemuri despite them being two of his best friends and the ones he's known the longest. Shota's the worst, he's constantly keeping secrets, including but not limited to running into Stain early into the guy's villain career.

Hizashi stares at the coffee machine as Yagi leaves, wondering if it will be worth Nemuri scolding him for drinking enough caffeine to kill a megalodon or whatever. That's another annoying thing, Nemuri's constantly trying to take care of them despite them all being adults.

As Hikage asks Bai Shu what he's running from he walks to the kitchen to grab something to drink. It's time but he really does not want to do this completely sober, not when he'll be digging up so many ghosts. Kudo was a great man and as much as the man annoyed him Hoshino was a half decent one. Even if they weren't they didn't deserve what happened to them.

Bai Shu starts after he pours himself a drink, telling Hikage about how they met Hoshino. He doesn't go into much detail but the memories that are brought back threaten to make his perfect calm break. By the look on Hikage's face something does show, a sign of the distress and grief.

It's probably just his shock at the horrors of war, people never talk about prisoners as anything other than statistics. He wonders what Hikage thinks of him, it can't be as the hero that the few who recognize seem to see him as. There are no heroes in war and even if they did what they had to do that doesn't make it right.

Even as the past starts to drown him he continues telling Hikage everything, hoping that he'll be able to make some sense of it. Even if he can't he'll need this for what Bai Shu has planned. It's cruel but it's just another thing that he needs to do to win this war that's long over. For some reason Abe Zen wants Hoshino's meta ability and Bai Shu will do anything to stop him from getting it.

As Izuku tells Toshinori about the newest dream he frowns, running his fingers through his hair. They raise an eyebrow and Toshinori frowns deeper, telling him that he'll talk to Shinomori but that Izuku should be carefree while he has the chance. Izuku almost scoffs.

Yanodo looks exhausted as Izuku walks into his studio, well until he notices Izuku. Then their face transforms into a mask of excitement as he gives Izuku the rundown of what's going to happen. There seems to be two especially important things, Yanodo is the funny one and he'll be the one to lead the conversation.

They go into the studio area and Izuku is grateful that this is just audio. People would definitely know that he was lying if they could see him, besides he does not want more people to recognize him. His heart is beating faster than is safe as Yanodo starts the show, introducing everything and Izuku as his anonymous guest.

I can't say everyone and I'm indecisive so I'm just going to go with the canon villains. Most of them are completely unrecognizable and I'm going to discuss two of them that I haven't talked about a lot and are significantly different. I've also just been thinking about them recently so here they are.

Chizome is pretty similar in his villain persona but he has a full life outside of it. He's close with his family & is pretty cheerful. His day job is as a reporter which is where he was radicalized. Chizome saw heroes getting away with horrible things which is why he became a vigilante. He's great with kids & because of that has become everyone he knows default babysitter. Overall he's just a compartmentalizing king when it comes to his villainy & I support it.

I've waited to answer this question for a few days because I know what the answer is but what it took me a while to understand is the why. Izuku's feelings towards Katsuki's bullying change throughout the series but yes they do forgive him. There will be vague spoilers for future posts above the cut but they're towards the end.

As I've tried to show at first Izuku both resents & is scared of Katsuki & how he'll react to Izuku's existence. But over time Izuku grows more brave and Katsuki starts to realize how wrong he was. It's not shown but Katsuki in the background starts to work on unpacking his bigotry during the summer of the first year.

As of Semester Three, Part Four they've reached a sort of awkward peace from Izuku's perspective. But Katsuki is in turmoil, he feels incredibly guilty & wants to apologize but is too scared to. It's only when the news comes out about Izuku's past Quirklessness that Katsuki feels like he can start to redeem himself and make things right.

Katsuki does not think that he deserves forgiveness or that he is a good person but he is determined to try to be better. He would accept Izuku hating him and he thinks that Izuku does but is just quiet about it. But Izuku doesn't, they've started to see that Katsuki is trying and for him that is enough.

One of the major ideas that I want to discuss is forgiveness & kindness when it is not only unnecessary but undeserved. Izuku is a very kind & forgiving person despite everything he's gone through & that is what I want to define him. So when it comes to Katsuki I've always known that I wanted Izuku to forgive Katsuki but it took me a while to fully understand why because for a while it felt more like a plot necessity than a character decision.

Izuku chooses to forgive Katsuki because he has to believe that the world can be a better place & that people can change. He chooses to be Katsuki's friend because he does like Katsuki's company. Izuku's forgiveness is not completely healthy but it is forgiveness. Besides all of the good reasons he feels like he has to forgive and more importantly forget because he does want to be Katsuki's friend. In their mind there is no way to not ignore the past and continue hanging out with him. Now onto the less vague spoilers.

Late in the second year Izuku accidentally reveals how horrible Katsuki was and a lot of people's opinion on Katsuki change. Eijiro, who at this point is one of Katsuki's closest friends, is really angry at him and people start to avoid him.

It's only at this point when Izuku starts to analyze his relationship with Katsuki. He's gotten better at not ignoring their past but he's still not fully confronted everything. So he talks to Inko who helps him figure out that he can't just pretend the past never happened. Izuku is allowed to do whatever he wants but he can't ignore everything and he has to actually talk to Katsuki about everything.

It's not that unusual for reporters to be outside of UA so at first Izuku's not concerned. When they all stare at him with hungry cameras the second he gets out of his mother's car he starts to worry. It's just as his mom is pulling away that one of them asks if he's Quirkless and Izuku's stomach drops.

They ask him thousands of questions all about whether he has a Quirk. It's like he's been convicted of something already when all he did was eat some of Toshinori's hair. Izuku's frozen in place, he can't move or even breathe, everything he's worked for is gone.

Someone grabs Izuku's shoulder and he looks up to see Bakugo yelling at the reporters. He tells them that they've known each other since they were infants and that all of their questions are nonsense. Izuku's shocked as Bakugo drags him forward, he should be taking full advantage of this opportunity. But when he glances back at Izuku and tells him that he's taking them to Toshinori's room he seems genuinely concerned.

They get into the school and Izuku wonders if they all know, he's been faking all of this for nearly a year. The walk to the classroom is agonizing and too slow, everyone is staring at him and he hates it. He wants to disappear, sink into the ground and just not have to deal with this anymore.

Finally they get to Toshinori's room and the second they door is closed Toshinori hugs him. For a second they just stand there before Bakugo clears his throat and Izuku remembers how weird this looks. Bakugo has two questions for them, where did Izuku get a Quirk and why is he hugging his teacher.

Izuku explains the basics of it and Bakugo looks angrier than Izuku has ever seen him. He walks towards Toshinori and asks if the Quirk nonsense was why Izuku was sick all the time last year. He's shocked that Bakugo even remembers that, it was mostly headaches and muscle cramps. He rarely left school for them but somehow Bakugo noticed.

Izuku tries to defend Toshinori, saying that his parents know and the nepotism is if anything a bad thing. He clearly said something wrong because Bakugo looks like he's about to kill Toshinori. Thankfully he doesn't and lets Toshinori call Izuku's parents to pick him up.

Some anonymous source told a newspaper that Izuku was Quirkless and that he got his Quirk from The Quirk Giver, at least it confirms that the empire didn't die. If not for the obvious Izuku would be focused on investigating that and trying to take down The Quirk Giver, now he's just sitting in his room and staring at the ceiling.

He would only have the resources to do anything like that if he were a hero and he knows that after this mess that dream is dead and gone. It's been a two days since the article released and Izuku has stayed home from school the whole time. The idea of facing all the people he's lied to makes him feel sick.

When the doorbell rings he doesn't get up to get it and only decides to when they ring again. He runs his fingers through his hair but doesn't bother doing anything else, just walking to the door as it rings for a third time.

It's Ashido on the other side, clearly ready to press the doorbell again. All four of his friends are here and he wishes they weren't, it would be so much easier to never see them again. Without thinking about it he asks what they're doing here and Ashido answers that they're checking on him. They don't think it's true and that is both the best and worst thing that he's ever heard.

Iida asks how he is and he just shrugs, resisting the urge to tell them everything just to see how they'd react. For a second he contemplates if not taking Toshinori's offer would have been better than that outcome. Iida nudges Izuku and he realizes that he's going to start spiraling, again.

They gather around Izuku in the living room and Iida says that it's nonsense before telling him about some of his relative's scandals. It's not comforting but Izuku appreciates the effort. The whole thing is made worse when he says that the idea of Izuku being Quirkless is ridiculous.

Izuku suggests that they put on some old kids movies he still has and they agree. When it's an All Might movie Uraraka suggests that Izuku is an All Might simp he gags. Things almost seem normal again but he knows that the idea of anything being normal for him is a pipe dream.

Katsuki ignores the journalists and waits outside for Deku, no Midoriya, tapping his foot against the ground. When he does arrive he looks shocked to see Katsuki, his eyes widening like a deer in headlights. That's been normal for them for years but recently he's begun to hate it more than he hates himself. Midoriya looks even more shocked when he tells him that he's not going to tell anyone.

They walk into hell together, with Katsuki flipping off the reporters as Midoriya stares at the ground. When Kirishima waves to them from the front of the building Midoriya tenses again and Katsuki frowns to himself. If Kirishima's a jerk about any of this he'll break his jaw, screw being a hero if that's what it takes to make it up to Midoriya.

They talk for a few minutes before Ashido comes up to them, asking to steal Midoriya. They both nod and Katsuki wishes that he hadn't, that he could say any of the stuff that he's been thinking for months now. He doesn't though, he's done enough to Midoriya.
