 I had hardly heard of Moonlight prior to its nomination, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. I never even saw the trailer. That’s the beauty of the Oscars; there are those stand out movies that deserve to be nominated because of their cinematic credibility. The only prior knowledge I had of this movie was that it was about a young African American struggling with being a gay man.

The films follow the life of Chiron “Little” over three time periods in Miami, as a child, young adult, and adult. He faces many obstacles from finding himself from within, to living with this crack head mother Paula (Naomie Harris). With the guidance from a drug-dealing mentor Juan (Mahershala Ali) and his long time girlfriend Teresa (Janelle Monae) he begins to understand who his is. While chronically his life we begin to see how he develops as a man and understand the struggle to know who he is. He faces difficulties such as bullying, fighting, and dealing. Throughout the film we find small and significant encounters with long time friend Kevin, who we later find out how vital he is toward Chiron’s life 

This past month, I have been on a movie mission. I have used every spare minute I own to watch these Oscar nominated movies, so I plan to write my own personal reviews of each film before tomorrows event. I like to consider myself a movie buff who loves being taken from the world we call reality, to a different time, place, or era. It’s vital that these movies are reviewed by not only film critics, but by the average person who can connect and share personal views with others. We read these reviews online, in the paper, and magazines, but most of the time they are censored and lack substance. Sometimes a brutal opinion is better than hearing what should be heard. So I hope you like what I have to say and if not thats great too. I would love to hear feedback and your own personal opinion.
