Carly Rae Jepsen Photoshoot (February 13th, 2019)

I finally have survived past my big deadline at work! Because that was this last week, I feel I did not give this album my FULL attention! However, I absolutely adored it nonetheless. I have been wanting to get more into Carly Rae Jepsen's discography after reading Hanif Abdurraqib's They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill US (he is a huge fan!!)

I picked Dedicated because my friend Hope loves it, and through her, I already love Want You in My Room and Too Much. Still love those, but in addition here are my other favs!

Ugh I was sick of being left out (this album is not on hoopla) so I made it my album of the week and just listened on YouTube when I could lol. because of that, I did not dive as deep into it as I otherwise would have as work is still demanding all of my waking hours.

Anyway, I loved this album from the first listen. I think part of this is because Harold and I are both in our running era, and it is a running vibey album. I was vibing!!!I also just love seeing Harry at such a thoughtful and happy time in his life. Like I know we do not actually know him, but it warms my heart to see as someone who remembers his angsty 1D years.

Let me say, I think the cast put on a 5 star performance. The plot did not fully capture me, but this is the case with most Sondheim tbh (although I think he just composed on this one? not fact checking). I think I understand why they shot this SO much in the close up (the big three were putting on a masterclass), but so much of what makes a proshot was lost in doing it. Lovely night with friends eating favorite childhood snacks, watching Duke win on silent in the corner, and discussing how we all need corduroy suits. JGroff, Lindsay, and Daniel ilysm.

As I said in my last post, I have been incredibly busy with work things and last Sunday I was once again at a loss of what album to have as new album of the week (I had tentatively planned on Harry's new album, but it wasn't on Hoopla!), so I kind of last minute chose Marvin Gaye's What's Going on? - and I am so glad that I did.

This is a short album, but I found some comfort from it especially with so much of the world being on fire (primarily that it has been on fire before). This album could have gone on forever in my mind, and I miss (even though I was not alive) how political the music of this time was. The fact that this was his ELEVENTH album is amazing to me.

Alright!

Due to me having to girl boss so much during week 10, I did not have a new album. instead I checked out TTPD from the library and got to WORK (and it was a success). This week, my new album was the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee original broadway cast album in preparation of seeing my friend perform as Marcy Park. It was a fun album, but the album did not make me excited to see the show. HOWEVER, the actual show was incredible and I could not get enough. the songs all work so well in the context of the show! I had a great time, but I likely won't be putting on this album as background noise a ton haha.

Favorite Films: The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996)

It is absolutely unhinged that I love this movie so much, but I will think about it forever! Perhaps my actual movie genre is not early 2000s rom com but rather 80s-90s unhinged rom coms. I think it is such an interesting concept (both the movie and the idea of platonic marriage). I was also incredibly shook by Jeff Bridges (give this man an academy award!) because why was he acting exactly and I mean EXACTLY like every boy w an advanced degree in math that I have ever dated. I actually found the makeover sequence and fallout really really interesting. “She eats carrots now isn’t that tragic!” We watched this in our hotel on a weekend trip to Kentucky!

Ugh I am behind posting this because of work, but I am absolutely obsessed with this album. I had heard several songs off of this album before (really had a phase with IYTSLMK) but had not listened all the way through. I really loved it, and it is my favorite album of the 1975 of the moment. absolutely no skips, but here are some standouts for me:

I LOVED THIS ALBUM OKAY! It reminded me of old Charli in a really nostalgic way without feeling like a step back artistically. I love her clear visions for a project. I would make a list of favorites, as I normally do, but it was actually a no skip album for me. I will give a special shoutout to Wall of Sound, probably my favorite from the album.

Before I saw the movie, I was having a moment with Dying for You, but when it came on in the credits, I found myself unable to dance or sing along (iykyk)

I had just finished rereading the novel (probably 4th time through?) the morning I went to see the movie and here is a modpodge of thoughts.

I think when Emerald Fennell said that she wanted to make the Wuthering Heights of when she was 14, I see what she means by that in a few ways (not just making everything "smooth brain"). For instance, I truly had no take aways from the whole second half of the book when I first read it at 14, so I did not mind all of that being cut (Linton and Cathy Jr are menaces). At that age, I certainly did not fully grasp (or care) how terrible both Cathy and Heathcliff were (for various reasons and from various causes) individually and together. I thought of Cathy and Heathcliff as one of the great love stories (this changed as I got older and interacted with the novel with a more developed frontal lobe). When I was in my reread over the last month, I was like Team Nelly all the time lol. However, I also think them not using Nelly as the lens through which the story is told allowed us to be more sympathetic especially towards Cathy (I liked Margot's Cathy and thought that she did a great job) and made Nelly more of a "villain." I wish that we could have seen an actor of color portray Heathcliff, and I was not really impressed with Elordi's performance. My album of the week was the new Charli xcx album (review incoming), and I worried it would take me out of the movie - but it certainly did not!

I have like a million other thoughts but will come back at some point. for now we can celebrate another movie checked off the list!

The Cost of Community is Inconvenience

One of my new years resolutions that has been difficult to track but has been more of a mindset this year is the goal of inconveniencing myself for the sake of someone else each day. This is not something that I have been necessarily reflecting back on at the end of the day but rather trying to let influence in the moment decisions. I find most days it is actually giving someone - often someone that I do not know - my time (letting someone check out in front of me, not aggressively power walk around someone taking a longer time on the sidewalk, etc).

I have also been pondering who is my community. I am being more intentional with saying yes to things with friends and a thoughtful coworker with task distribution at work. I have also been thinking of how to be more intentional to my community with spending money. For many years of my life, I felt I had no choice and had to always go with the cheapest option, but I now try to view every dollar I spend as "where is this going and who is it going to?" Last year, I stopped shopping at Amazon and Target, despite Target being the only grocery store within walking distance. This was a huge loss of convenience, but I found more intentional spending came of it. January was a shit month, for so many reasons, but one of the biggest was ICE. The anecdote to despair is ACTION, and I took the leap and cancelled my Spotify subscription, which in turn will cancel my Hulu subscription leaving me with no active streaming services. I do not use Hulu a ton (I hurried up and finished season 5 of Lost before making plans to check out season 6 from the library) , but I use Spotify all day every day.

I have not quite decided what I will do for music. I plan to use Hoopla at least for my weekly new album. I have some songs I bought from 2006-2009 on iTunes. With Spotify going up on prices this month too, I feel like I would almost be able to buy a new album a month. In a perfect world, I would love to use the amount I was spending on Spotify locally, but this is not a perfect world, so we will see!

I made the decision to cancel a while ago, but it was today my pay period officially ended, so it is day 1 without something I have used almost every day for 12+ years! Here we go!

BAD BUNNY - BAILE INoLVIDABLE

DtMf is SO GOOD!!! I am a year late to the party but have arrived nonetheless. I have long been a casual Bad Bunny fan (the man is beautiful, talented, and has perfect comedic timing) but never got too far into his discography. When he won album of the year, I was like it is time to take the leap - especially after his incredible Super Bowl performance.

I listened to the album once all the way through as is my custom and then got absolutely stuck on DtMF. Like when I say stuck I mean days would pass with only this song on repeat. I do not know much Spanish but can now sing most of the chorus. All of this to say, I got very stuck on this song and therefore cannot give as comprehensive of a list of my favs as I normally do - but I will attempt for symmetry sake. This album and I are not done!

I am currently working through the Poet Laureate Anthology for my daily dose of poetry. I really enjoyed the last collection rather than sticking with one single poet's work. The anthology is a nice in between, as it has poems grouped by author. As I was flipping through to get a sense of if I should commit to this collection, the book fell open to William Carlos Williams. He was my first love's favorite poet, and I felt he understood his work in ways that I could not. It has been years since I have read WCW, and I took this as a sign to devour his whole section within the anthology in one sitting. "This Just to Say" is my favorite WCW poem, partly reminding me of Sunday mornings together but especially those towards the end where our routine actions became so apologetic and infused with grief.

This month's Ina Garten recipe was a HIT, and I hope to make it again SOON!

This is Ina's Fig and Ricotta cake, and it was simply perfect. Figs are out of season, so I rehydrated dried figs, which for some reason really shocked me that it worked! I used water but read online that many people used wine or brandy, which could have given the figs a bit more character. I think this base cake would be really good with berries instead of figs, but I LOVE figs so enjoyed as is. The hardest part of the recipe was since I do not have an electric mixer, I was stirring ingredients by hand! Shared this with friends at a Galentine's event, but since there were so many sweets, there was plenty left over for a linocut afternoon with another set of friends! It was served with creme fraiche, which I had not tried before, and I am honestly unsure of how to use the rest of the tub. I have been enjoying the leftover ricotta on jalapeño and cheddar sourdough with grape tomatoes chopped on top, and it has been perfection!

I just finished Beware of Pity by Stefan Zweig. Everyone pick up a copy immediately. There’s so much I want to say but can’t express it but this book may have changed the way I think about pity, kindness and cowardice.

My next 5 star book of 2026 is Beware of Pity by Stefan Zweig. I am confident that I will think about this book for the rest of my life. It is so hard to summarize, but if you love a monologue that makes you stare out the window for the rest of the day this is the book for you. I finished the book over a week and a half ago, and I still cannot fully put into words my exact thoughts on it. It makes me feel like Liz Lemon saying "All God's children are terrible" but still looking on them with a bit of empathy.

Reading this book made me yearn for a college English seminar and a three hour round table discussion.

This was book 10/50 for the year! During the winter storm I stayed with a friend, who had an impressive YA collection, so I have also read The Perks of Being a Wallflower (incredible work of prose tbh) and the Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy (fun quick reads!).

I along with the rest of the world kind of skipped over Positions, and I felt like I owed it to Ari to circle back in a meaningful way. Eternal Sunshine literally changed my brain chemistry and was such an essential part of me finding my way back to a version of myself that I was proud of while still having such love for the girl who let grief define her for a year.

I will part with many fans and say that this album was not the masterpiece that I worried I had overlooked. certified bops to be sure, but at the end of the day, my favorite song from this album is still pov - and specifically the live at vevo version (unreal vocals!). I had a hard time picking favorites because many of the songs were somewhat repetitive to me.

I’m entering an era of picking up a cookbook with my library haul! This one called Plant Protein by Gigi Grassia was on the new shelf. This recipe in particular caught my eye on a skim through and WOW! I didn’t have pine nuts so I used pistachios in the sauce. Aldi didn’t have nutritional yeast, and I substituted Parmesan. It was my first time making my own gnocchi! I absolutely loved it and cannot wait to have leftovers tomorrow!

Laufey, girl, I was unfamiliar with your game! For this week's album, my friend that I was staying with during the winter storm and I decided to look through her record collection to pick my album. Unfortunately, then her record player did not work (womp womp!), but alas I had made a commitment!

I really enjoyed this album and the range that it had while maintaining a common thread. I felt like I was romanticizing my life when listening - both the good and the bad!
