We Need to Accept that Silly Things Can Hurt People
Please allow me to ruminate a bit more on mental health on this blog. I have ADHD and OCD, both disorders commonly stereotyped and conflated with minor, silly behaviors like yelling SQUIRREL when you see a squirrel and organizing things by color. These stereotypes can often minimize and erase the genuine difficulties and harm that these conditions can cause. That’s very true, and it often causes intense sensitively and knee-jerk denial around stereotypes around this. I don’t think that’s necessarily the best reaction, because sometimes people can have symptoms very similar to these stereotypes.
I think we need to accept that silly things can hurt people. Silly, ridiculous symptoms can devastate people’s lives. People shouldn’t have to react into their painful past and trauma to get people to take their symptoms seriously when those symptoms are silly on their face, because that turns things into a pain competition and can result in gatekeeping how much people must suffer before their seemingly ridiculous symptoms get taken seriously.
I think we just need to, as a society and culture and social norm, accept that silly things can genuinely, sometimes intensely, hurt people. Yes, I do have the impulse to tell an animal’s name when I see that animal, and yes it’s part of my symptoms that makes it harder to me to drive and hold conversations and do basic functioning. Yes, I do worry about incredibly tiny and silly things, that the world’s tiniest cut means I’m literally dying, and this has at times been incredibly miserable to live with and severely inhibited my functioning and nearly lost me a job. Also I’m going to joke about it sometimes because it’s funny. I’m not going to find a joke about it from a stranger with no OCD funny, because they have no idea how much pain it can cause me.
Sometimes these conditions are absurd in ways that are funny. That’s true and people with the conditions should be able to joke about it. But everyone needs to understand, just because a symptom is absurd doesn’t mean it can’t also devastate you and ruin your life. So if you don’t have these conditions and aren’t super close to someone who has them, I think you should be sensitive and avoid joking even if it seems silly and funny. I think there is where true destigmatization lies: accepting that the silly brain can also really hurt.
Alternative responses to the question ‘How’s it going?’ For physically disabled people:
- ‘The going is heavily assisted.’
-‘On without me.’
-‘It uses wheels’
-‘It’s not.’
-‘Against my will.’
-‘With frequent breaks’
-‘On pure spite’
-*That was a verbal question and I couldn’t hear you*
-‘We don’t have all day to go through enough medical history to give you enough context to understand exactly how it is going.’

When someone ask if I'm still sick even tho most of my conditions are chronic.

Just thought this was kinda funny, but I've only had one relationship in my life, and that 1 year of it really helped me figure out I was ace. I mean, I feel like I was a bad datemate to my gf, but when we were making out, I honestly just did my best to angle my head to keep watching whatever show we were watching most of the time, and if that doesnt scream ace then I dunno what does 😅 Dunno if this is familiar to other aces for how they found out they were ace, but the things piled up for me🤔
I used to think sexual attraction was sinful and that my not experiencing it just made me a really good Christian... it’s funny what we tell ourselves when we’re in denial

Hello..
(via)
The idea that housecats are baby-talking at humans when they meow is based on a misunderstanding.
Yes, it’s true that, amongst themselves, adult housecats generally only vocalise to communicate with kittens, but the particular set of vocalisations that adult cats use to communicate with humans is distinct from, and largely non-overlapping with, the set of vocalisations that they use to communicate with kittens.
Your average adult housecat has anywhere from twenty to fifty distinct vocalisations that are basically only used to communicate with humans.
Cats meowing at humans is less baby-talk and more your cat learning a whole second language.
Can confirm. Between themselves, cats usually use body language which is very subtle. Meowing is very unsubtle—- it’s obnoxious, in the cat world. It attracts far too much attention, which isn’t ideal for small predators.
but they know that we don’t get their body language, so they meow instead.
it’s more akin to cats learning a second language which is comprised of yelling.
So it’s like they are learning German
Even cooler, it’s basically a secret code between cat and owner. Studies were conducted where owners would listen to recordings of cats vocalizations and try to determine what the meow meant. Owners could identify what their own cat wanted (food, attention, help) based on the meow they heard, but couldn’t for other cats.
Your cats aren’t just learning a new language, they straight up invent a secret code that only you understand.
was thinking about why the lack of female characters in lotr and the hobbit dosen't feel like exclusion and it's because they're just dudes being friends, like they are all just a gang of besties wandering about and the three female characters basically go "right we're doing this now" and they all just go "alright we're doing this now :)"
The women are treated as people, who are important, but happen not to be the current main characters. The men aren't men because they are better than women at swinging swords, they just happen to be male. They go off to war/ the quest because it happens to fall into their hands. None of them particularly want to. They all want to go back to their life at home where they left the women and families.
Mrs Maggot is kind and sensible. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins is jealous and petty but in the end principled and stout. Arwen is beautiful and kind and learned. Galadriel is powerful and ancient and wise, but is tempted by terrible power. The Ents have lost their womenfolk and miss them, because without women there is a loss greater than not reproducing. Ioreth of the houses of healing talks too much and is a little annoying but is knowledgeable and capable. Eowyn believed her work looking after her uncle to be less important than going to war, but she realizes she was wrong. It may be noble to lay down your life, but it's possible to keep on living and building and healing and that is more important than any battle, and much better than making a home in your despair. Rosie Cotton is faithful and patient and does not take bullshit and keeps the hearth warm in times of crisis.
The women aren't excluded. They have other important things to do.
wait reblog this this is what i meant but better

Friendly reminder to all wlw: u don't have to be butch OR femme. You can be both, neither, 55% butch and 45%, whatever, but you don't have to be one or the other if you don't want to. Those aren't the only options of expression for wlw
Butch and Femme are lesbian only terms
They arent, they've been used by the black and latino working class lgbt community before upper middle class white lesbians decided we couldn't use them anymore and then later stole them. Stop viewing lgbt through a cis, white lens and if you're going to make fun of me, at least don't be a coward about it. :)

I'm begging white LGBT+ people to click these links and educate yourselves. I've been seeing so many white wlw erase Black and Brown history. I also encourage fellow Black and Brown LGBT+ folks to read up on our history. As someone who uses butch, and is Black, I wanna make sure everyone knows that butch and femme aren't lesbian only terms. There's even terms exclusive to Black LGBT+ folks as well. Do research about the history of stud and terms likes bull dyke.
I'm tired of people pushing shit that was made up by white TERFs. If y'all care so much about queer history then fucking do the research and learn about how people of color influenced the community. We help build it after all. Don't y'all dare bring up Marsha P. Johnson but then erase Black LGBT+ history. Don't.
Emotion-based magic is just...10/10. Characters causing destruction in a rage, only to be horrified by what they’ve done? Excellent. Characters being ten times stronger when someone they love is in danger? Wonderful. Characters claiming they don’t care, yet their magic says otherwise? Perfect.
I think the reason this trope is (often) so effective is because the magic is now character-relevant. It doesn’t just advance the external plot, it reflects the character’s internal experience. And especially if you’re trying to show a shift in a character’s values or priorities, it can be a really fun tool.
