Opportunities

Leaving Milan was a risk but if you do not try; "You may lose something good but gain something better!” -Quote Unknown. I have an interview for another internship this Thursday 5 February 2015 hope it goes well, it is something I have been interested in in a very long time and people keep telling me just stay where you are comfortable!

You say: yeah but how will you grow and be happy?

I say: I was thinking the same thing people push me not in the right direction look down on me but it’s not their life they are living they can’t determine my future! I will always do what is best even if it seems ridiculous and ludicrous at the time but its experience and I make sense for MY FUTURE!!

Studio and Pins

Picture A: Spot and cross paper is really great it makes it easier for finding your own grain lines creating your own grain lines, tracing other pattern pieces, creating pieces on the bias, and a lot more. This is an example of me pinning pattern pieces together to create strips for binding.

Picture B+C: Emile allowed us to use some of his wonderful fabric to experiment and use. I created a high-collared Gillet from a skirt that was originally a mock up by Emile himself, he allowed us to cut and recreate to get our creative juices flowing this was a good way of testing our skills and seeing what we could do within a couple or a few hours.

'Emile Vidal Carr'

With the internship that I started in January with 'Emile Vidal Carr’, I have learned a lot of new techniques that haven't been shown to me, especially with tailoring. This is a two-piece sleeve with cushioning. I executed this demonstration. This shows how a tailored jacket or blazer would be inside, it allows the fabric to form a curve and allows the sleeve to fall and lay flay by the jacket/blazer. I am happy with this internship, I am glad I found it!! @EmileVidalCarr

Everyday Life

There is a lot of talent in Milan, whether homeless or rich they find a way of showing their talent. Image1: A man carving flowers out of Parsnips Carrots and Beetroot is a talent and a patient one at that. The colours are beautiful and the juice created a blend that reminded me why I love art, design and fashion. Image 2: In Milan, I live with Sicilians and seeing traditional food from their land was very intriguing.

Image 3: Gelato! Another Italian lifestyle it is very traditional including Pizza and Pasta this little shop window did an amazing job on presentation!

Aperitivo

Aperitivo is very common in Italy during the summer. In Milan its non-stop all year round, this particular Aperitivo is on the Navigli

Aperitivo happens from 7-9pm or sometimes 10pm. It is an all you can eat buffet with a mixture of foods like a zucchini lasagna, chicken, potatoes, swede to sausage rolls and various finger foods.

This particular one has play dough all over the walls and you can partake and become part of it.

Flash Back Friday

A pizza shop gives you a large slice of thick dough pizza that is unusual for Italians.

Italians love their thin crust. However, in this shop one slice can fill you up for dinner. For a slice of Pizza and a bottle of water, it costs €4.60 quite cheap beside the Duomo and Galleria. It is right beside the ‘Cioccolat Taliani’ the famous Gelato store in the heart of the city.

Waiting In the Airport to come home For Christmas

This weekend my cousin came to Milan. He had a gig in Torino so I travelled and surprised him at the airport. The gig was in Turin. This was another good opportunity to explore another city whilst I am here in Italy. Whilst he was in rehearsal, I decided to take a wander around and down the busiest street in Torino. They remind me a lot of central London back streets and similar to the Liberty London building and around the Barbican.

It is a lively city full of life and happy people. Whilst I was there, they had a market stalls around which are always great. In Milan, every last Sunday of the month there is a market on the Navigli. It was full of vintage clothes, accessories, crockery, toys and furniture and it was very inspirational. It got me thinking about my final collection and how I could merge various cultures together i.e. cities, landscapes and buildings.

Foggy Walks

Mostmornings are extremely foggy I could not see apartment blocks unless I was 300 yards away; the things you do to get ahead in life are amazing!

I have asked a few Italians why it is so foggy most mornings. They say it’s how it has always been. Nevertheless, it leaves elements of mystery with this city in Italy.

Milan does not feel apart of Italy as it is very modern compared to other cities in Italy especially if I am comparing it to Naples, Verona, Genoa, Turin even Rome. Most of Italy was bombed and they restored what they could still maintaining Italy’s culture such as large entrance doors to apartments and similar structures it is a very important to them to keep their cities symbolic.

Subway Days

Travelling on the metro with a few friends from bible study group. Bible study happens every Tuesday

I go to church called Milan Bible Church, its only 30 minutes’ walk away from where I live. It is a small church, the people are lovely and I have met some lovely people and other students from around the globe for instance: Australia Indonesia Sweden Zambia US Italy Philippines China

Being in another country has taught me a lot about the culture in Italy, Milan and other cultures. This has given me many ideas on how to combine various ways of living into my collection that I am doing in NABA Milano University

Printing and Painting

Friday printing Class has to be my most enjoyed class of that week. I feel like I can be myself and express the way I used to. Theses simplistic designs are not over elaborate. I have used various techniques using my original stencils such as Flock- feels like felt; lamina-shiny gold or silver paper; and paint.

Marketing and Management

We was given a task a while ago to make a presentation on verifying target markets as a group we collected ideas and put them together, making notes and feeding back to one another.

As a group, we created a Facebook message group to confirm ideas. My involvement was to gather all the notes people had on various sheets of paper put them into order and structure them adding and withdrawing information that was or was not necessary I also made a quick PowerPoint presentation to make it as a visual guide.

Brainstorming.

Our target is to create a 30-piece collection to make only one design. Trying to narrow down ideas is hard as it is for me I have managed to cut out 8 -12 however, this is proving difficult. I still keep optimistic and branch out of my comfort zone by collecting ideas and merging them together.

Print Workshop

This is one of my first designs in the workshop. Henna and OM Design inspired this particular design.

This design particularly reminds me of a Portuguese tablecloth or a tea towel as peacocks tend be very symbolic in Portugal.

My Scarf..

Knitting workshop was set a target to complete a scarf of your choice that resembles you. I have combined two techniques called a seed stitch that is in the middle of the Unity scarf and Stockinet stitch that is most common for jumpers and other pieces of knitted wear.

A Stockinet Stitch is also known as a plain jersey Stitch.

Neat Knit.

I remember my mother trying to teach me, when I was mid teen my tiny hands could not co-operate with the needles. However, now my hand and eyes can co-operate with each other I am able to knit and love to knit its relaxing and takes your mind off of many things. I have completed samples so you can see what I have achieved Basic Stitches -Links -Plain Jersey also known as a Stockinet -Rib 1x1 -Rib 2x2 -Seed Stitch
