okay i’m sorry i’m gonna do one (1) more steph hot take

I wish people wouldn’t erase the strong relationship between Steph and her Mom.

I feel like there’s a temptation to just hand-wave her father as abusive and her mother as absent as to strengthen her ties to the Batfam and her need for “familial” connection. I mean, the fanfic writes itself. But her mother was actually present and very involved Steph’s life for the majority of her run as Spoiler.

Now, the absent nature of Crystal Brown being explored is not entirely unwarranted. Often through flashbacks, and her initial introduction, she is characterized as being neglectful due to her pill addiction. But there’s also a very clear narrative of her overcoming this addiction to become a better Mom for Stephanie that warrants discussion.
