An Overview of Note-Taking Styles
Note-taking is one of the most essential skills a student should master. It allows you to record and review information to be used in the future. But whatâs the best way to do so? Hereâs an overview of note-taking styles that can help you maximize your learning!
- a lifeguide for students with anxiety - iâve been struggling with anxiety for more than a decade. needless to say, i know what itâs like to be in a school system when your mental health isnât at its best. itâs easy to get discouraged and give up on your studies. iâve been there as well, but look at me now, iâve graduated from a bachelor degree, a master degree and iâm even doing a second one. IT-IS-POSSIBLE. if i did it, you can do it as well. so here, i picked some of my best tips that i wish iâd know sooner when i got to higher education, when my mental health failed me. x prioritize i canât stress this enough. P R I O R I T I Z E all your tasks. itâs easy to be overwhelmed with work, emotions, pressure. so whenever you feel like youâve got a thousand things to do but donât know how/where to start : list everything. as soon as youâre done with your list, pick three colours : one for important tasks that need to be done asap one for tasks that you have to do but arenât a life or death question one for tasks that can wait/less important once itâs done, mark your important tasks with numbers: one for the most important, second for the second most important etc⌠this method will help you to know what youâve got to do first and help you organise your brain.
x use the pomodoro method being anxious means procrastinate then worry about procrastination because youâve got a lot to do but also struggle to focus because your mind is thinking about something else⌠itâs an endless spiral. the pomodoro method is well-known amongst studyblrs but it is really helpful when you canât focus. 20 minutes of work, 5 min break, repeat it 4 times then give yourself a bigger break. honestly it worked for me. i go full hardcore mode for 20mn, and iâve never been more productive. + bonus tips : my mind wanders easily, so i also use an extension that blocks websites (forest is the best!!) it helps me to stay focus.
x when itâs too much, stop it youâve got to submit an essay, you havenât got much time left but you canât work. you canât work because youâre too anxious, because youâre scared, because you want to give up, because all of this, is getting too much. did that ever happen ? donât force it, youâre not going to be more productive, trust me on this one. instead of crying your eyes out on this essay, give yourself a break. have a shower, talk to a relative/friend, cook something, go out for 5 minutes, scroll your tumblr timeline, do some breathing exercises, do something else. when youâre feeling a tad better, come back, write down everything that is currently making you anxious and split them in two: what can/canât be solved. and then write down solutions, even long terms ones. once itâs done, you should feel a bit better, enough to go back to your work.
thatâs all for the real real real tips, but hereâs some bonus that i do as well: - listen to classical/relaxing playlist - use earplugs when i need to be super focused - always keep a notebook nearby, itâs helpful to write what youâve got in mind - ask for help. never be scared to reach to someone when you canât do it anymore, itâs important. - remember to take time for yourself as well, sleep is important, so is staying hydrated.
i know itâs not much but those tips helped me get through my dissertation and honestly i would have done so much better if i had known those lil tips before.
take care, - aly

The Very Basics of Not Killing Your Computer
AVOID HEAT STRESS
If you have a laptop DO NOT use it on a soft surface like a pillow or on a blanket, itâll block the vents on your computer and make it get really fucking hot inside.
If you have a desktop you gotta open it up and blow out the dust sometimes.
If you are moving your laptop in a bag turn the laptop off. Donât put it to sleep, donât just shut the screen, turn it off, because otherwise itâs in the bag generating heat and thereâs nowhere for the heat to go in the bag. OFF. Not sleep. OFF.
DO NOT DROP
Okay I know that should be obvious but drop damage to your hard drive is bad bad news. Be as careful as you can to set your computer gently on flat surfaces; donât leave it hanging out on a bed where it can get knocked off, donât set it on the roof of your car. And yes, just dropping it a couple inches can kill your hard drive or totally shatter your screen.
DONâT PUT SHIT ON YOUR KEYBOARD
Look Iâve seen four people ruin their laptops because they had a pen on the keyboard and closed the laptop and it fucked up the screen and the keyboard and it sucks so much and you feel awful after it happens because itâs so avoidable just donât put things on your keyboard and always check that your laptop is clear before you close it.
PROTECT YOUR PORTS ON YOUR LAPTOP
Youâve only got one power jack and a limited number of other inputs on your computer and if they detach from the motherboard youâre fucked. USB ports get damaged because people use them a lot and eventually it weakens the connection and then they just stop working and it sucks. You can get around this with USB ports by using a USB hub to connect things like your keyboard and mouse.
For your power plug you just gotta be careful. Avoid tripping over the cord at all costs, donât yank the plug out of the computer. It will SUCK VERY MUCH A LOT if you have to buy a new computer because the power port lost contact with the motherboard.
Donât move your computer with things plugged into it. Take the power cord off before you put your laptop in the bag, take out the USB mouse dongle, do not travel with little nubby bits sticking out of your computer that can easily get caught or get tweaked or snap off inside of the thing.
(I really canât emphasize enough that most of the âit will cost more than itâs worth to fix thisâ laptops I see are because of USB ports and power jacks. People donât seem to know that this isnât something that can be fixed easily; a broken power jack is a âremove the motherboard and resoldier componentsâ job, not a âplug a new one in in fifteen minutesâ job and most computer repair shops arenât going to solder things for you and if they DO itâs going to be very expensive)
RESTART YOUR SHIT AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH AND JUST LET THE FUCKING UPDATES RUN
You should probably restart more than once a month but whatever. This is actually something that I consider part of reducing heat stress because when your processor is straining to keep up with all the background bullshit thatâs running from a program you opened three weeks ago itâs going to use up resources and get hot and look just restart it once in a while.
Also the updates are almost always okay and safe and generally running updates is a good and secure thing to do (though maybe follow a blog dedicated to the OS you run because if there IS a problem with the updates that blog will probably talk about it before the update gets forced on your computer)
ANTIVIRUS BULLSHIT
Yes you should probably be running an antivirus.
Sophos is free and itâs fine. But donât pay for it - if youâre using Sophos use the free version.
If youâre looking for something paid and a little more comprehensive I recommend ESET - get the cheap version, renewals cost less than the initial purchase, and feel free to get a multi-year version, the credentials follow your email not the computer so if your computer dies before your license expires you can install the license on a new computer.
DO NOT INSTALL NORTON OR MCAFEE THEY ARE EXPENSIVE BULLSHIT. Kaspersky is whatever. Itâs less bullshit than Norton or McAfee but not as good as ESET for about the same cost.
If you think youâve got a virus run the free version of Malwarebytes and get your shit cleaned.
KEEP LIQUIDS THE FUCK AWAY FROM YOUR COMPUTER
Again this should be obvious and yet. But seriously, just make a rule for yourself that drinks arenât allowed on the same table as your computer and youâll save yourself a lot of headaches.
PLUG YOUR COMPUTER INTO A UPS
Okay I fucking hate amazon but hereâs a thing you should be using, just search the rest of the internet for âsurge protector/UPSâ and youâll find something that isnât from amazon - APC is a solid brand for this.
Basically you want a fat surge protector that has a little bit of a battery backup and you want to plug your computer (desktop OR laptop) into that instead of into the wall. The benefit of this is twofold:
1) if thereâs a power surge the UPS will prevent your computerâs power supply from getting fried and possibly frying parts of your motherboard
2) if thereâs a power outage and youâre *at* your computer youâll have enough time to save what youâre working on before your computer loses power (like, youâll maybe only have a minute or two on a small UPS but thatâs still time to hit CTRL+S and keep from losing work)
At a bare, bare minimum your computer should be plugged into a surge protector but NOT directly into the wall.
BACK YOUR SHIT UP
[we interrupt this yelling for me to tell you that Western Digital has apparently released their new My Passport line and Iâm obligated to inform you that you can get a 2.5âł USB 3.0 backup drive with FIVE FUCKING TERABYTES OF STORAGE for $130. Or you can get 4TB for $93. Or you can get 1TB for $53. basically what Iâm saying is that it is not only cheap computer season it is also cheap hard drive season.]
[also if youâre getting a backup drive get western digital not seagate seagate fucking sucks and has a much higher failure rate]
Uh, okay, anyway - Do an image backup of your computer every once in a while so that if you get infected or your hard drive dies or whatever you can just restore from backup and move on like nothing happened.
HEREâS HOW TO DO AN IMAGE BACKUP.
SAVE YOURSELF THE WEAR AND TEAR
You know what is cheap? USB Keyboards and USB mice. You know what is not cheap? Fixing the touchpad on a laptop or replacing a laptop keyboard.
Get yourself a USB hub, a USB Keyboard and a USB Mouse (wired or wireless, doesnât matter) and if youâre using your laptop at home plug *that* into your computer.
Also if your keyboard on your laptop breaks itâs fine just to use a USB keyboard instead I promise; if the screen breaks itâs also usually cheaper and easier to get a used or inexpensive monitor than it is to replace the screen. Your laptop is basically just a very small version of whatever bullshit is going on inside a desktop, if the peripherals break but the core components are fine you can just use it like a desktop.
Unless itâs a piece of shit that doesnât have any USB ports or video out in which case you got ripped off, friend, demand functionality in your devices Iâm sorry.

âeat the frog' method
Hi all, itâs werelivingarts. I just stumbled across this method called âeat the frogâ, which means you get the most difficult or important task out of your way first. I actually have been using this method for a long time, hope this post gives you a new way of managing your time and productivity! đ â¤ď¸
âIf itâs your job to eat a frog, itâs best to do it first thing in the morning. And if itâs your job to eat two frogs, itâs best to eat the biggest one first.â â Mark TwainÂ
I just got a job as a writing tutor, and it inspired me to start a series of writing masterposts! From teaching college composition for two years at grad school and from working as a consultant at my universityâs Writing Center, Iâve come to learn a few things about writing Iâd like to share. Some of these tips may sound basic, and some may be fresh to you. Some may meet you exactly where you are. Regardless, these are some of the foundational aspects of good college writing.
I. Content & Style: Avoid Fluffy Language
Perhaps this is a symptom of trying to meet page minimums, but some students tend to inflate sentences with unnecessary adjectives. Similarly, they may puff up an essay with a useless statement, like, âDepression affects people in various ways.â What follows a sentence like this is usually a cataloging of the various/numerous/diverse ways in which depression affects people. Kill the middleman: that useless sentence. Be assured that most readers are astute enough to infer that depression affects people in many ways when you list said ways.
Language that sounds like that of a motivational speaker is maddening to most college instructors. âIf you are true to yourself, you will be happy in life.â âFriends and family are the most important way to get the emotional support you need.â These are platitudes and overly generalize. Broad claims make for unoriginal writing; be specific and back up your claims with a logical argument, providing evidence for your opinion. Broad generalizations like, âSince the dawn of time, people have loved artâ are just padding and detract from more interesting ideas you may have.Â
II. Description: Be Concrete and Concise
An easy way to avoid vague fluff is to use concrete images and concise language. First, if you can say something in five words instead of ten, thatâs great! Go with the five. Second, concrete details provide a more refined image in the readerâs mind (car vs. Ford Taurus, for example) without the use of adjectives and adverbs. And try to avoid adverbs when you can. Show how a person is running âquicklyâ instead of telling the reader the person is running quickly. Is there sweat? Is this person bumping into others? Are the legs pumping like pistons? Specificity makes for much more interesting writing.
III. Organization: Make a Backwards Outline!
The best thing about outlines is that you ultimately do not have to follow them. Many people use the drafting process to think and come up with their best idea in the middle of the paper. But often the papers that are turned in are first drafts, so that great ideaâaround which you ought to have centered your paperâremains in the middle, not standing front and center and lacking enough space to develop further. If youâve allowed yourself enough time to make a second/final draft, post-organize your paper. Map out the flow of your ideas and ask yourself if this is the best order and arrangement possible. Yes, revision is more work, but it is worth it. It is so, so, obvious to professors when a paper has not been properly organized.
IV. Grammar: Comma Splices
The most common grammatical error students make is the comma splice. A comma splice is the attachment of two sentences with only a comma. For example: âHarvey and Tim built a raft, they took it out on the river later.â ARGH. âHarvey and Tim built a raftâ is a complete sentence, as is âthey took it out on the river later.â How do you fix a comma splice? Well, there are three ways:
Use two separate sentences: âHarvey and Tim built a raft. They took it out on the river later.â
Add a conjunction after the comma: âHarvey and Tim built a raft, and they took it out on the river later.â
Use a semicolon: âHarvey and Tim built a raft; they took it out on the river later.
Standard/Edited (American) English grammar is the grammar of (American) academia and will be for a while. Also, simply, spelling and grammar mistakes only work to undermine your writing. If you have brilliant ideas, you shouldnât obfuscate them with lousy grammar.
V. Language: Build Your Vocabulary
What does âobfuscateâ mean? Well, when you encounter unfamiliar words, look them up and commit their meaning to memory. Practice using them, when appropriate. Of course donât bloat your language so that your prose reads like a thesaurus. Your writing should sound intelligent/formal (with the help of new words), yet not awkward and stiff with the clumsy handling of âbigâ words.
VI. Scoring: Read What You Wrote Out Loud
This is pretty basic. Listening to your own writing will help you determine if it sounds stiff and/or unnatural or just awkward as hell. You can read your writing aloud to yourself, but it is best to hear another person read it. I refer to this section as âscoringâ because writing has a musical aspect, too. Your use of language should be pleasing, made so by choosing the right word for the right moment, by opting for combinations of words that sound harmonious, and so that your delivery of ideas is arranged to have the most powerful impact. Choose a tone suited to your subject, and know thy audience. What will sound good to you may not sound so good for your intended audience. Adjust the score accordingly.
VII. Research: Do More of It Than You Think You Need To
Often you will be assigned a minimum number of sources for a research paper. Letâs say five, for example. Go for eight or nine. Of course you should avoid using redundant sources (a book on Samuel Beckettâs stage directions and journal article about Samuel Beckettâs stage directions). Find as many perspectives as possible; itâll only make your arguments stronger. Plus the more academic writing you read, the more naturally itâll come when you have to do your own.
VIII. Go Weird or Go Home
Another reason more using sources than required can help: finding unique perspectives/approaches to a subject. You may encounter some ideas that counter popular assumptions (peer pressure has some positive impacts; depression can sometimes benefit cognitive function; anti-drug education actually increases drug use). Another interesting tack to take is to go with a subject that often makes people uncomfortable, such as child sexuality, masochism, and alternatives to capitalism.
Strange, uncommon arguments are more interesting than broader overly researched topics, such as nature vs. nurture. A paper on the deliberate use of plot holes, in Mary Shelleyâs Frankenstein, and their effect on narrator reliability would be far more interesting than the representation of capitalism in Animal Farm by George Orwell. The more complex and difficult the argument you choose the more critical thinking/writing skills you demonstrate. Weirdness is rewarded in academia, by getting your professorâs attention, by getting published in critical journals, etc. In this case, the axiom of âBe unique, and stand out in the crowdâ stands true.
I hope this was helpful! Message me or send me an ask if you have any questions.
How NOT to study
âIâm going to start studying right after Iâve ______ââŚyou wonât. âOooh, Iâm going to highlight my notes with 49930 different colours to help me retain informationâ Highlight key words!! âEveryone else has these amazing, expensive notebooks, pens and Macbooks. Maybe I need them too to be a good student.â Hint: You donât âThere more I manage to cover during this hour, the more Iâll learnâ Remember: Quality NOT quantity âRevision is so unnecessary. I have a good memory and I know Iâm going to remember this on the test I have in 2 monthsâ⌠sorry to break this to you but you probably wonât remember a lot. Go through everything youâve covered during the last week on the weekend. âOh boy, Iâm so tired. I think Iâll just read this chapter in bed.â Hint: Youâll fall asleep âOkay so I need to study this and this much to get a better grade than _____â wth nonono. Study for yourself?? âOmg, I didnât study today. Iâm such a failureâ You donât have to study every day. You shouldnât study every day!! Have at least one day a week when you do nothing school related, your brain needs the rest!  âI didnât get a ____ in the test. I must be dumb idiot and a complete failure who wonât accomplish anything in lifeâ One grade doesnât affect your life one bit. âI must study law, medicine or any other STEM subject to be considered a real hardworking studentâ Hint: Humanities and other subjects are just as hard, okay? âMy teacher is bad and thatâs why I wonât ever learn thisâ Take your computer, open google, google the stuff you donât get. Was it so hard? Donât blame your teacher for not understanding something. Theyâre humans and not perfect. Be ambitious and try to teach yourself with the help of your friends, the internet, youtube, library books etc.
