Medusa with the Head of Perseus, Luciano Garbati, 2008
I adore how she carries his head low, at her side, and not aloft in triumph. This is not a self-aggrandizing hero lauding her great deed. This is a woman who wanted to be left the fuck alone.
Also look at her body. The double hips. The asymetrical boobs. She’s thin, but she’s realistic as hell. That’s a real woman.
And the look in her eyes. Damn.
I originally saw photos of Garbati’s Medusa a long time ago, but I specifically remember this post from earlier this year. Medusa was one of those pieces that really buried into my head and heart. Sounds silly, but just looking at it gives me strength.
Today I was lucky enough to see it in person. She’s incredible. And, something that the original pictures don’t show— she’s HUGE!
I love this even better now that we can see the baffled look on Perseus’s face.
I think that the hardest thing to accept with the myth of Medusa and Perseus is that she (Medusa) is always portrayed as the villain. Perseus is trespassing in HER home which, in the modern day, is a crime on its own. Then he proceeds to kill her. Why does he do this? For his own vanity. It’s his arrogance that got him this quest to kill a woman who is doing nothing wrong, cursed for something beyond her control. Murder, another crime. Why is Perseus portrayed as the hero when he commits crime after crime towards the supposed ‘villain’, a woman who was raped and punished for it by the goddess she devoted her life to because her attacker was a god that the goddess had a long feud with.
I think it’s important that we recognise that Medusa was a victim and Perseus was the villain. I love this statue because it shows the victim finally getting retribution against the man who killed her.
Amazing, everything in these reblogs is wrong.
I am so sick of people mischaracterizing Perseus as the prototypical arrogant he-man that killed an innocent woman for glory.
HE WAS SAVING HIS MOM FROM BEING RAPED.
King Polydictes was forcing Danae into marrying him, and the only way Perseus could stop that from happening was to give him the head of the Medusa. The gorgon that could kill people with a look.
It was literally a suicide mission that Perseus had to do save his mother.
He didn’t want to do it, he didn’t want to be there, and the only reason he survived is because the gods recognized his heart was in the right place.
And for the record, Medusa was not some innocent waif who was victimized by the gods and turned into a monster, she was a powerful titaness whom even the gods feared.
All of these people people trying to glorify Medusa are just playing into further victimization of women, because if Perseus had died there then Danae would’ve been forced to marrying Polydictes, and, oh yeah, Andromeda would’ve been sacrificed by her selfish parents.
The Myth of Perseus is one of the most feminist stories in the entire Greek canon. The entire story around various female characters and their importance to the plot, and I’m sick of these rewrites that follow the lead of a Roman author.
Medusa was not a victim, and Perseus was not a hero of the patriarchy.
If people want to shit on Greek heroes who deserve it, Theseus is right there — he was a murderer, a slaver, and an arrogant adulterer.

the writers of the lightning thief musical just clearly Get so much abt the books..the fact that luke and percy’s stories are paralleled to the point where luke reprises percy’s “i want” song in the end before he runs.. the fact that when thalia turns into a tree the special effects are literally just annabeth and luke standing behind her with their arms outstretched to form the branches bc a part of them was left with her…the fact that sally has consistently been played by a black woman since day ONE,, they’re deep in the text and i appreciate it
i forgot the fact that in bring on the monsters silena and luke sing “we’ll make em listen to us, we’ll make em listen” like BITCH!! we barely even see silena in this musical and don’t even touch that storyline and YET!!!
the fact that luke has the very first line and introduces us to the world of gods so OF COURSE we trust him from the very beginning, the fact that the entire cast is double cast so when a hooded figure appears at kronos’ side in percy’s dream who happens to sound exactly like luke we don’t think twice about it, the creators of this musical understand the complexity of luke’s entire role in the story so well and they take full advantage of the medium they’re working in to bring the audience to luke’s side without them suspecting a thing it’s brilliant it’s breathtaking THIS is drama
Hot take but if an author’s main motivation for a screen adaptation of their book(s) is to do what they wished they had written in the first place, then maybe a screen adaptation shouldn’t be made. People fell in love with what already existed and that’s what they want to see. Isn’t that enough? Anyways, if you like seeing what-if things went differently for stories, fanfiction is right there. There are so many fanfics that do exactly that

no cus i truly believe that if ethan had lived he and percy would become really good friends after the events of the giant war. he notices percy is no longer spewing "but the gods are the good guys!!" rhetoric bs, which makes him much more pleasant to be around to ethan
#rick had to kill ethan because otherwise he and percy would've fucking unionized against the gods (tags by @/bvckbiter)
I would go so far as to assert that percy's relationship with hazel is his second (arguably third) most demonstrably intense and emotional and mutually caring friendship in the books but people (including other percy fans) would scoff at this because they don't remember a single thing from son of neptune and are stunted by their inability to think about hazel for even one second
percy never had a conversation in the first 5 books like the one he had with hazel in the old alaska shack. he called hazel's mother beautiful and said she looks just like her. his voice broke from emotion when he confessed to her how scary it was to nearly drown and hazel consoled him instantly even though she herself had died before. she assures him that he won't die, that he'll make it home to annabeth and that solace is exactly what he needed to hear. percy tells her how valuable she is and that he needs her by his side and that he and frank won't let thanatos take her back. hazel thinks to herself that she'd be okay with dying again as long as percy and frank survive the quest. chapters later percy states clearly that he trusts hazel and frank as much as anyone from his past and she kisses him on the cheek and tells him that he's her family. THIS is the kind of intense platonic friendship that people claim they want more of but don't acknowledge in practice!
"believe me, I've been thinking about it"
