Hrishi Hirway: What do you think about Josh planning on buying Donna some shoes? Josh Malina: Yeah, especially because we’ve discussed it so I’m always looking for it, they’re just… Do it already! It really is actually just kind of like, do you guys not realize that you’re dating? Hrishi Hirway: The idea that a man would buy a woman shoes sort of reminds me of Pulp Fiction when they talk about giving a woman a foot massage. That’s a level of intimacy that goes… to another level. Josh Malina: Yeah, that’s the word I was about to say. That’s an intimate thing. That’s not normal for a boss to be saying. Hrishi Hirway: Or any man to any woman who is not his significant other.

The romantic aspect? Yes! Totally. Completely. I always felt that from day one between Josh and Donna, from the first moment in the pilot – after the first take… she’s so strong to me as someone to work with and as an actress because she really cannot be fake. She’s translucent. I was very, very invested, and I think Janel was too, in not letting down the huge build up that these two characters had.

In the pilot she was just hired as a day player to get through the pilot. She was not a series regular. She was being hired episode to episode. But she was being hired episode to episode because she was inspiring Aaron every single time the camera was aimed at her.          Aaron Sorkin: It’s true.          Lawrence O'Donnell: Brad was in all those scenes. We were sitting there trying to think up Donna stories which was not necessary because it was all in this relationship.          Bradley Whitford: It’s one of the unintentional advantages of the way Aaron works. If you’ve planned out an entire season, as other showrunners do, which has its virtues-          Aaron Sorkin: I’ve heard.          Bradley Whitford: You would never pick up on that! You’re sitting there watching dailies and seeing something work, which I think really kept things alive. I have a very clear memory of them calling cut, and I walked over to you at the monitor, and I was like, “I looooove her.”          Aaron Sorkin: I remember that! I remember that. Donna is the answer to “Why didn’t Joey Lucas and Josh hookup?”
