I ended up making au/headcanon/idk thing based an detail I noticed when I was reading a couple of the punch out comics. Multiple times doc is referred to as a heavyweight boxer, despite there being no weight classes in the wvba. Here it is if you wanna read it:

Doc and Peter (arcade challenger) joined the WVBA when they were 18. Both of them were active in the mid 70s to late nineties, with Peter being a middleweight boxer and doc being a heavyweight. They were originally rivals in thier youth, but eventually ended up becoming friends outside of the ring.

In the early nineties, the wvba changed ownership(cough mr dream), which led to a massive overhaul in its regulations; one of which being the removal of weight classes. Despite public outcry by fans and boxers, the changes were made.

Lightweight and middleweight boxers struggled the most with the change, suddenly having to fight people double their weight. This caused a massive influx in lightweight boxers having to retire due to injury. Peter was one of these cases.

After multiple bouts back to back fighting heavyweight boxers, he was forced to get an eye surgery which led to his retirement. In solidarity, doc ended up retiring not long after.
