I never thought I would restock these!

The mouse lip balm was one of my debut listings and the first thing I developed solely for Etsy. The design process went fine but I ran into massive issues where after producing more of them than I can remember; around 75% were unusable. They have slowly sold over the last ten months, including some that went overseas. As of a few days ago, I was down to the last one, so I looked into storage and found I had a group of parts ready for assembly. I expected 100% failure from them and to my shock, they all seem to function fine! One-off project: radioactivity signs! These are far from the grandiose idea I originally had, which involved using a wireless charger to illuminate a sign only when a door was shut, but I still like these simplified results. What I don’t like is how uneven the white paint at the edges turned out, but painting is not my specialty. As seen in the photos, they have glow-in-the-dark paint lining the radiation logo that gets charged by an internal light. I’m not planning on listing these for sale but would be glad to make more by special request.

I hit 100 sales on Etsy last night!

When I started my page at the end of last year, I had zero expectation of selling anything. I’ve mentioned before that I don’t really advertise beyond sharing new rat stuff in a single Facebook group, so reaching this sales milestone in nine months really means a lot to me. My goal is bring nifty, affordable stuff to people that nobody else has made before, and with sales in numerous countries across the world, I like to think I’m meeting that mission. I can’t express how grateful I am for all of the support disco rats have been getting! I am now working on making a few requests I received for duplicates of colors that sold out quickly. My inbox is open if anyone else wants a sold out color or has a custom request!

I wanted to share a little about the process of making them. These started out from my original rat light, shown in the top left. I first deprecated the model (top right), thinking simplified geometry would be sufficient for applying mirror tiles. After getting decently far, I realized that I would end up spending far too much time cutting them to fit the edges, so started meticulously modeling small squares all over (middle left). After finishing that step (middle right), it dawned on me that the model was covered in rough intersections, so I spent tens of hours going back through all of the 830+ squares I had placed, connecting them at the edges, to give a smooth overall appearance (bottom left). Finally, I ended up with the first prototype (bottom right), which was the point when I realized each disco rat would need a base coat of metallic paint to bring the whole thing together.

I don’t really advertise beyond posting on my social pages and in the Rat Art group on Facebook, so all of the support means a ton to me.
