Based on a conversation with @animallathepurpledragon! For some context, we each have our own versions of Benrey and Gordon, but her Benrey and my Gordon are together.
Her Benrey has a lot of different forms, so the question arose:
"If your Gordon was stuck choosing, which form would he pick?"
Benrey doesn't care which one he decides, he will transform and stay that way until Gordon asks for another.
However, he'd just tell Benrey to be whichever form he feels most comfortable in. But the issue is, Benrey doesn't know which one is his. Sometimes he has issues figuring out his identity, and on occasion will cry in his room.
Even though Gordon tells him he's beautiful no matter which form he chooses to be in, and he'll accept whichever one he wants to be. Benrey still doesn't know.
So Gordon asks,
"How do you want to look?"
The other replies,
"However you see me..."
He responds by saying,
"I love you just the way you are. You're perfect." And gives him a big hug and a kiss.
Benrey weeps, but he's still troubled. So in a shaky voice, he asks,
"What's perfect to you? What is the way I am...?"
He hums a little in thought, gently rubbing his back.
"Everything about you, right here right now, as we are, together."
For once, Benrey doesn't know what to say. He's still searching for the answer to what Gordon really wants him to be. He's looking for his true self but can't find it. It's like there's a missing piece to his memory.
The scientists played too much with his shapeshifting ability, forcing him to be what they desired.
So Gordon tells him,
"Be what you want to be. Be what makes you happy. Live for yourself, and not for others."
With a tired voice, he replies,
"I don't know how to live with myself anymore... How to really be happy. How to be the real me. I've lost everything all for the joy of others..."
And to that, Gordon reassures him,
"You haven't lost me." He takes a moment to pull away and gaze into his eyes. "And you won't. You don't have to figure this out alone. And... It might take time, but... I'll be there with you every step of the way."
Benrey cries freely in his arms, and Gordon hugs him tightly without letting go.
"Life isn't about what you have and haven't done, it's... it's about the journey you've made, how you grow and learn, and the connections you build... And you... You've come a long way, Benrey. And I'm so damn proud of you."
