A Nighthawk

Here’s to music. That blood force. That binding element. And as of today, KRAWT (Demos), our latest 6-song EP, is now available on all global platforms.

In that fateful month of March 2020, as the world was slamming its doors and toilet paper was being hoarded by the pant-shitters, I headed into the studio in west Stockholm with a project called KRAWT. Me on bass and synth and vocals, Richard Sellgren on guitar, Dennis Egberth on drums, Martin Fogelström at the controls. We recorded a few songs live. Three months later, Richard Sellgren and I headed into the studio in north Stockholm with Johannes Berglund. We did a new take on one of those tracks.

I discovered this. There are many many directions a song – and a life – can take. In honor of this reminder, and because I think these songs (and people) are fantastic – I am releasing them as an EP entitled KRAWT on April 15th. Rounded off by a song I recorded all on my lonesome in February 2016, a few months after my brother Ben died. A song that has been resting on my hard drive and now wants its goddamn wings. They are yours - fly!!!

The story of A Nighthawk is one of music, family, life, death, kids, love, the lack of it, and beer.

A Nighthawk started out as Sarah Snavely. And then Ted Malmros. While making music together, we also made kids – two of them. As they cut teeth and learned how to pee on the toilet, we released a couple EPs. We were graced with the rhythmical gifts of many a fine Swedish drummer. And then we landed in Victor Hvidfeldt. Ted filmed videos and learned to record us in the rehearsal space. Victor gave us rhythm. And we recorded an album. Just as it was getting ready to be released, my youngest brother decided to die. 

Thanksgiving 2015. 

ICE IN THE BELLY, FIRE IN THE MIND was released, but it had nothing to do with that dark dark night of the soul. When those songs hit the digital airwaves, I went underground. I wrote and wrote and cried and screamed and hit below rock bottom. I spent the past four years dying to myself – the self I’d been. 

In the meantime (15 February 2018, my mom’s birthday), I headed into the studio with Victor, a bag of beer, and 4 songs. To record demos. To get gigs. To hit the stage again and rock that raucous dance. The recordings were just too good to not release. Two years followed – two years of waiting for somebody to knock on the door and shout, “Oh my gawd, hand me those ammmmmmazing songs immediately. I’m here to release them!”

Rather than a doorbell ringing, a lightbulb moment arrived. I understood that I could do it all on my own. No more laying low, the ever-cool victim waiting to be discovered. With the help of a handful of mystical souls along the way (I love you, Martin, Fredrik, Victor, Philip, Lello and as always Ted), WAR WOUNDS is here. This is the tale of life after death. A story of solitude, gut-wrenching grief, survival, and an impenetrable love for blood. A deep respect for what we have while we have it.

In these times of nightmarish political poppycock, we have written and recorded a protest song. First released in early 2017 on Rough Trade Publishing's A Song A Day compilation, we are now making it digitally available around the globe. For your listening entertainment, we proudly and protestingly present HORSES AND MEN. With a photograph of Sarah taken by our web magistrate Raffaele Malanga back in 2004.

Ice in the Belly, Fire in the Mind OUT NOW

Following two EPs via Stockholm based artist collective INGRID, Ted Malmros (also of Shout Out Louds) and Sarah Snavely (formerly of Dag för Dag) release their much anticipated full-length Ice In The Belly, Fire In The Mind across all digital platforms via their own imprint - Dead Dandelion Collective - on Friday 26 February.
