You know, after the last comic it made me think: what makes someone to be chosen by the crown? And how far (and strong) can a crown influence a person?
Because what happened to Hastur smells like outside influence from our purple crown
Ooh boy, this is gonna be a long-winded answer that's mostly going to be rambling so bear with me.
Also feel free to ask any clarifying questions - it helps me flesh out the concept more. Hopefully this makes some semblance of sense.
Okay so
I'm a huge fan of possession stories + cursed object stories, and the idea of the crowns being parasitic entities really spoke to me.
I noticed fighting Shamura that the purple crown was embedded into their brain.
It's literally rooted into their skull
After Shamura dies, the purple crown loses its bearer and needs a new one to stay active.
We don't know how Shamura found the purple crown (I have my own thoughts about that), but if we're going on possession rules then the crowns reach out to those who are already vulnerable.
Death was given to Lambert and technically still under Narinder's control until AFTER the rest of the Bishops fell, in which it decided to change its allegiance to a new vessel that could enact the rest of the prophecy.
War on the other hand, and like I said before, we don't know how Shamura go that crown. My thought is that it thrived on the conflict within the lands of the Old Faith, twisting its followers into monstrous, mutated forms that were constantly angry and fighting each other. It needed the conflict to still have power, and without a vessel to enact its will, it was slowly losing its influence and ability to remain active.
Which is where Hastur comes in.
Hastur was and still is already in a poor mental state - he's spiraling from the lack of autonomy over his own life, the feeling of being wrenched from the afterlife over and over again, and experiencing the horrors firsthand of what the heretics likely went through in the Old Faith, regardless of if the Lamb's intentions were good or not.
But despite the fear he felt for the Lamb, the War crown was woken up by two things:
Rage - for keeping him here, for mentally destroying him, for everything he'd ever been through (even if some of it wasn't the Lamb's fault)
Envy - because if one little lamb could become a god, if a fucking worm could become a god, why couldn't he?
And so the War crown found crevice to root itself into.
A friend of mine asked me something similar a while back, and this is a bit of what I said in return
Its why Hastur's thoughts were conflicting with each other, even the ones in his own voice.
It's both an outside influence and an inside influence - it keeps its vessel complacent by making them believe that it was their idea.
And when Hastur stopped during a brief moment of clarity, him crying wasn't just because he just nearly killed Leshy.
It was because he wanted to, and this was the first time something nearly convinced him to do it. And it scared the shit out of him because he didn't know why.
So, it was technically an instinct for the purple crown, but it doesn't have any real thoughts or feelings aside from self-preservation and the need to sustain itself.
And it's going to have its vessel back, whether he wants it or not.
Are any of the other crowns going to be "reawakening", and possessing other cult members, and if yes, who and why?
Would it be possible for the old bishops to reclaim the crowns without them being given back freely (like how Narinder gave Lamb the crown at the beginning of the game)?

I'm not sure if this has been asked but I am curious.
What would your COTL OCs do in a modern setting? Would they still be in a cult, or would they be vastly different?
If you feel up for it, I would love to hear about your Lamb and the Bishops as well in such a setting. You are an inspiring soul, and I love your lore drops.
This hasn't been asked before! Also thank you sm that means a lot ;A;
Color coded for easier reading
-- Disciples --
Bessa would like to work in a position to help people, so she'd probably fall into something like a social worker or a school teacher
Fear would likely go into something involving agriculture; he loves to garden and grow his own food, so I can see him as a farmer.
Hastur would either be a scientist/researcher; something that lets him expand his knowledge beyond what he already knows
Panamo would have been somewhere in entertainment, maybe in theatre? Despite the fact that they rarely speak, they have a beautiful voice and can dance
-- Bishops --
Lambert would want to live as a farmer and/or keep livestock; the shepherd doesn't want to go too far from their flock
Narinder for some reason I can see as a museum curator or an archeologist? Something involving delving into the history that was denied to him after being trapped for so long.
Leshy would go into agriculture or botany; something involving nature
Heket I can see also going into agriculture because she likes the hard work keeping the crops alive; she could have been a singer but thanks Nari.
Kallamar would be a doctor or a pharmacist; either that or a marine biologist because you cannot keep this man out of the water for long or he'll go stir crazy
Shamura would like to lead a quiet life as a librarian or an archivist, or they'd lead the MEANEST mob and there's no in between
I don't think they'd still be in a Cult, honestly. Maybe more-so like an organized crime ring, if that makes sense.

I've seen some confusion between my Cult of the Lamb AU and my own original story/passion project Where the Roots Burrow + their versions of Hastur so I made some distinctions between the two
Where do you get you're posing references for hastur? Like why are they oura farming, do you it get from other artists or it's all on you? Well that all I'm asking hope you have a good day
Usually by looking them up on Pinterest or on Google, otherwise I keep messing with it until I say “fuck it, good enough”
