A quiet resolve of hope through time

We often say, “Better days are coming.” But have you ever wondered why those better days always seem to be ahead of us? I find it fascinating how the concept of time shapes our hope.

Cultural narratives—whether it's the comforting promise of fairy tales with their assured happy endings, teachings about a promised land, or the hopeful anticipation of joy that follows a night of mourning—serve to strengthen our belief in the brighter days ahead.

Even wise men, like Solomon, recognized that there is a season for everything and a time for every matter under heaven. Perhaps, we are simply being obedient to time. We allow ourselves to feel and experience what each season in our life has to offer, trusting that the next season will bring something better.

For nearly three months, I have been teaching English grammar here in Thailand, and I’ve come to realize that there is a symphony in the silence of abstract nouns. Words like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and gentleness are intangible, yet they transcend linguistic boundaries.

My experience communicating with Thai people has shown me that, even where spoken words are few, the language of the heart speaks volumes. Patience has become my constant companion as I teach and help students grasp the intricacies of a foreign language. It is the steady rhythm that underpins our learning journey, creating a space where genuine connection can flourish.

Love speaks for itself when I receive care and generosity from my Thai colleagues and the newly found church community. Their acts of love build a bridge of understanding that fills the gaps left by my limited vocabulary.

Peace resides in the quiet presence of someone with whom I cannot communicate verbally, yet their mere presence reassures me that I am not alone.

In Thai, gentleness is conveyed through the soft tone of the particle “นะ” (na) and the polite particle “คะ” (ka). These gentle expressions embody warmth and respect.

Kindness and goodness walk hand in hand, expressed in the warm smile of a passerby or the gentle guidance of a market vendor helping me find what I need, despite our struggle to understand each other.

Faithfulness, though often non-verbal, is abundant and expressive. It manifests in the constant trust that persists even when we speak different tongues, weaving an unseen thread that ties our interactions together.

For many of us, it is in times of extreme joy or deep pain that we find ourselves instinctively reaching for a pen. With its tip, we scribble down the solace and clarity that we so desperately seek, pouring our emotions onto the page.

These intimate, “dear diary” moments have often kept us from the brink, serving as a lifeline that pulls us back from the edge—away from the allure of a pill or the cold blades of a knife. In these moments, writing becomes a form of therapy, a quiet conversation with our innermost selves.

I now perceive the pen as a gift of life. It journeys with us through the darkest valleys, guides us when we are lost in the wilderness, and rejoices with us on the mountaintops. The act of writing is a profound blessing, allowing us to process our experiences, capture fleeting thoughts, and give voice to our deepest emotions.

Whatever has your gaze will always have your heart. Isn’t it fascinating that what we truly see and focus on with our gaze is deeply connected to our heart’s desire? While pondering this, I was reminded of the verse, “The eye is the lamp of the body.” This suggests that the eye symbolizes one’s vision or perception, which influences the entire body (or life).

In a world full of distractions and superficial attractions, it’s easy to let our gaze be drawn toward things that may not nourish our spirit or align with our true values. Social media, advertisements, and even casual interactions often compete for our attention, subtly shaping our desires and priorities.

With this in mind, I see the importance of having quality control over what we allow ourselves to look upon. Just as the heart reveals what we desire, the eyes influence what we desire. By being mindful of what we look at, we can foster a healthy vision and life-affirming desires.

A lesson found in a flatworm.

The encounter happened within a cozy coffee shop where my friend and I decided to hang out. While sipping our cold drinks, the books neatly nestled on the shelf caught our attention. In a moment, we found ourselves between the pages and bumped into a page crafted with illustrations.
