Emos & scene kids got this close to abolishing gender for real. I try not to think about it too much.
The idea of a popular teenage subculture where girl & boys pretty much all dress the same feels impossible now but for a while it was reality and it was beautiful.
The hippies, too, attempted this
Hippies, grunge kids, goths...but by the time emos came around, all the adults were like oh no, the boys have long hair & I can't tell everyone's gender, this is totally unprecedented & a massive issue. We need to bully them mercilessly
Part of the reason why I didn't even come close to figuring out I was trans as a teenager was that back in the day you could just be a girl dressed in the same skinny jeans, baggy band t-shirts, flannels and wearing the same exact unisex converse as the boys and it was literally so normal
