[ID: A page of a play. It reads as follows, "Theseus: Stop. Give me your hand. I am your friend. / Herakles: I fear to stain your clothes with blood. / Theseus: Stain them, I don't care." End text.]
Herakles - Euripides (Tr. Anne Carson)
Four days ago, on 5th April 2021, I finished Blackbirds at 128,209 words, which is still too many for my genre, but I did my very best to cut it, so now, after eight drafts and nearly four years of writing and editing, it's finally ready for querying.
Am I ready for querying? Hell, nah. #rejectiontrauma But this birb needs to fly out into the world. It's in the best state it could possibly be and I have nothing to lose.
Okay, maybe a little bit, says my braincell. Which runs on anxiety and caffeine. I have no other braincells, and this one is shared as well.
Blackbirds has three distinctive scenes in a kitchen. One involves a bathtub, but it is not the first scene that involves the kitchen. I first imagined the kitchen like a small aisle, but then the bathtub appeared later on and the kitchen turned into a large, square room.
This is at least the eighth time I’m going through this manuscript and everytime there is no bathtub involved in the kitchen scene, I go back to imagining the small, aisle-like kitchen. WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME, BRAIN?!

After a severe cutting of words and another beta, Blackbirds is, at 129,201 words, in its final draft. And this time, it genuinely feels like it is. It really feels -- almost -- ready. (Heck, it should be. It’s been five years and eight drafts.)

Oh, what a gem. And this was the seventh draft.
OH HEY loving the new cosmic horror aesthetic, looking very fine Caleb 👁️

Since I’m getting down to real business with my novel Blackbirds soon, I decided to dig out this blog and clean it up* a little. Fact is -- sadly -- you didn’t miss much in the almost year I abandoned this blog. I cut Blackbirds by a lot of words and it went through another beta round and that’s it. My last move will be to apply that feedback and then it’s ready for querying. This time for real. I feel it. Not kidding.
*Any spoilers -- except some minor information about stories and characters -- are gone. Tag games, quizzes, anything that easily clogs the blog is also gone. (Don’t take it personally, pls, this was a business decision.)
I will still have to rework some pages but by the time an agent looks at this blog because they saw the URL on my query, that will have been done.
when I said goodbye I hope you cried
Hey all! A while back, I asked people to send in questions about querying, and some wonderful writers and I took the time to answer. This isn’t meant to be an advice post. Instead, it’s a chance for querying writers to share their experiences so others can see what the process is like. Though the answers below the cut are honest and realistic, the thing that stands out the most is the fact that none of us gave up writing after facing rejections. Any suggestions given are based on what works best for us.
The interview can be found below the cut and on my website. Here’s a list of the questions we answer, in case you want to skip to a particular one:
What are you querying, when did you start (and finish, if applicable,) and how many queries have you sent?
If you are still querying, how long do you plan to continue? If you’ve stopped querying, what helped you know it was time to stop, if you feel comfortable sharing?
What materials did you collect before starting?
Other than scrolling through Twitter, is there an effective way of finding personalisation information about agents, such as their MSWLs?
How many agents is it wise to send queries to at once? (Since wise is subjective, we each explained how many we sent at one time.)
What is something super important to include in a query letter?
What’s a warning you’d give about querying?
how important is it to have a pre-existing fanbase for the book you’re querying?
How to balance writing a book for you (as well as the market/industry/audience) and the “damn but if I do this it’ll make thing so much harder when I query!” anxiety?
I’m also tagging people who sent questions, answered questions, or otherwise asked to be tagged!

As it turns out, I’m not yet done with Blackbirds, so there’s a sixth draft in the works now. I was informed that 155,000 words gives agents cardiac arrhythmia, so I’m currently cutting the manuscript down to at least 130,000. I’m mainly sharing the process over on twitter.
Character A: Let’s write [Character B] a friendly note, shall we? Dear... Incompetent... Dumbass...
