two very loving and deserving humans became brand new parents this morning
my casual desk cry today is the happiest one of late
welcome to the world, baby girl!
Probably you have in your mind an image of a grandma. A woman who makes amazing, elaborate meals and multiple kinds of delicious pies and then insists on doing all of the dishes afterwards herself so...
my cousin wrote the above about her grandmother. to be clear, this is not the grandmother we share in common. it’s her other grandmother, whom i had the pleasure of transporting to her baby shower a couple years ago. her other grandmother, who happened to live where i live despite none of us growing up here. my interactions and time with this woman were limited and yet i feel tied to her.
this cousin, author of the tiny letter, and i have always had a lot in common (bossy oldest children, avid readers, sports fans, now lawyers) but we were not necessarily close. i have told her wholeheartedly that her friendship has been one of adulthood’s greatest gifts and she has confirmed same. i love having her as family, but i am so proud and honored to have her as my friend. her writing is a perfect balance of humor and heartbreak. i love every installment and not simply because they feature people i love.
i have one living grandmother and i love her in an indescribable way/amount. she is hilarious and fascinating and kind and snarky and adorable. she is truly magnetic, as is my mother and any spark of that in me flows from them. i am aware of how lucky i am to be 31 and to have her, here and healthy. she is so full of life. it is too hard to imagine the seasons ahead.
august has disappeared in a whirlwind of roadtrips, basketball, bars, birthdays, beaches, boat rides, beers and magic.

You will ask me what I want. I do not know. Do I want to fall in love? I don’t know. Did I know, yesterday morning, that I was going to love you? that my heart was going to be taken possession of by friendship a few hours later? Certainly not. No more can I know how I shall feel toward a man when I shall be in love with him. What I do know is that I wish to be free; that I do not wish to be under obligations to any one. I wish to act after my own fancy. Let others do the same. I respect the liberty of others, as I wish them to respect mine.

NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts have become an institution, but they don't often feature actual superstars. This time, they got one. Chance The Rapper stopped by NPR's Washington, DC offices before a recent show at the massive outdoor shed venue Jiffy Lube Live and performed a couple of songs for NPR's cameras. In his Tiny Desk Concert, Chance did a laid-back version of the glowing Coloring Book deep cut "Juke Jam" and covered Stevie Wonder's 1974 classic "They Won't Go When I Go," both with his touring band backing him up. In between those two songs, Chance recited a new poem called "The Other Side," which he'd written specifically for the occasion. When the office intercom interrupted him, he started over again. Watch the video below. The self-released Coloring Book is out now.

A new mini-epic taken from The Hamilton Mixtape highlights the successes and struggles of immigrants in a country formed by them.
“Her fantasy novel Children of Blood and Bone, the first of a trilogy about a young girl’s battle with a prince over bringing magic back to West Africa, is going to be released some time next year. But it’s already got a seven-figure publishing deal with Macmillan, and a massive deal with Fox Studios too, with the latter acquiring the movie rights pretty early on in the day for a book that hasn’t even been published yet.”
