Santa Claus is really lame compared to the Icelandic Christmas figures. The Jule Lads in Iceland are 13 and they appear one by one 13 days before Christmas. They all have some kind of obsession for one thing, Door Slammer, slams doors, Spoon Licker, licks spoons and Window Peeper, peeps into your window. In the old days they would steal things but today children put a shoe in the window and get something each of these 13 days before christmas. The Jule Lads have a horrible mother, her name is Grýla and she is some kind of a troll or ogre, she makes a list, checks it twice and eats the children that don’t seem nice. In some poems she has three heads and a mouth of a dog. A popular children’s song is about the Christmas when she died of hunger, because all the children were so nice. The Christmas Cat, is a huge beast that eats the poor people that don’t get any new clothes for christmas. Centuries of raising children in Iceland have proven that scary things like the Christmas Cat and Grýla are very useful when you want children to sit still and behave.
