I’ve seen so many movies on East Asian identity and have had a lot of east Asian girlfriends who’ve told me their life stories. Like a very close personal friend who was a roommate was Korean and it’s not really my place to say but there’s an extreme disconnect in how Asians are portrayed on screen and what is seen as unique to Asian identity vs “Latin American/european” or even African. But alot of what’s described in these Asian identity flicks applies to ..most nationalities who have been fluidly reshaped by neoliberal interests for a lack of better terms? I always loved the movie “the farewell” because of how it tackles this tension between American and “foreign” identity and the director even said she meant it to be universal …but yea idk. I think it obv has something to do w this Cold War mentality but I really feel like it’s a whole different world irl vs in media/online…the fact that “striver” is essentially a slur for upwardly mobile East Asians but this mentality doesn’t apply to other groups is so interesting and quite literally psychotic to me

South Korea Norway and Colombia remain the most interesting counties to study neoliberalism. Maybe Saudi Arabia too but its history w the old guard is kind of overshadowed by another country defined by pastiche people love to hate rn. Australia too , to an extent but I think what makes Australia interesting is how it subsidizes itself

I don’t know how normal it is to watch full seasons of problematic reality tv shows over 10 years old while eating pints of ice cream and doing internet sex and just scrolling and playing stuff on your phone to the point of emotional numbness but maybe it’s normal when you’re waiting for a check

I don’t even know how to feel about the zillenial bourgeois. It’s kind of a you know when you see it vibe. They never have had to work for anything so they are in a perpetual state of being 13 but also the only ones w impressive careers. It’s so specific I feel like my mind melts anytime I talk to them and they have this energy where they make you feel like you’re apart of something but it feels like a trap for them to do some social maneuver and act like you’re obsessed w them or something

I’ve never been to a Disney park besides Disney land and I don’t really intend on going unless I’m with kids. But I love the ecosystem of content creators and Disney people who like to find “hacks” to somehow think they are beating the system through these convoluted schemes. There’s even politics in terms of like people who pay for fast passes or people who don’t respect the character actors but they all essentially still want the same experience and keep up with the food menu and changing policies like it’s the weather…it’s insane

I feel like Taylor was really strategic and realized after dating that British actor guy that she wouldn’t stand a chance playing the taste Olympics and it was better to market to the lowest common denominator and start to peddle her own narrative on being this staple artist who’s gone through different eras or whatever. I think there’s some calculated angle to her basicness that she’s always had since she pretended to be a country bumpkin. Which like, relative to the class she now belongs to she’s definitely new money. Her relationship with taste and class and artistry and marketing is so interesting to me. There’s a camp element to it, I think she’s the ultimate millennial.

I love the whole trope in fiction of like a spooky psychological but ultimately tantalizing deconstruction of the fragile mythos of American identity….But a niche that’s missing is fiction surround how post Cold War American political operations have infected so many national identities almost without prejudice, and what that foundation in your generations identify means in an emerging era of like..apparent multi polar power, it already means something so internally polarizing for America citizens alone. It’s really easy if you’re not living in America to just compartmentalize yourself as hating America without considering how this paradoxically this idea of liberation from old guard America …is American itself. Is there even an end.
