Do you have a teacher who made such an impact in your life that you still think of them decades later? Ernest remembers vividly the day that changed his life when he was sent to Mr. Jasper Cockrell’s office at Corrigan High School for talking during class. After being reprimanded, Mr. Cockrell asked him one question: “What are you going to do when you graduate?”. Ernest shared his plan to “join the Navy” because he was “tired of having to walk 3 miles to go to town and I like to play poker. If I join the Navy, I won’t have to walk as much, and I can play all the poker I want.” After several moments, Mr. Cockrell said “That’s the stupidest plan I ever heard” and went to the local bank in Corrigan, Texas who then funded a scholarship for Ernest to attend State University.

Do you remember the warmth of your grandma's embrace, or the way she always had a silver dollar tucked away for your birthday? Jo's heartwarming stories about her grandmother, Delter Harbison, may take you back to cherished memories of your own grandparents.

Jo vividly recalls Delter's long, white hair and the daily routine that brought order to her life. The ever-present brooch, the apron at home, the morning ritual of hot water and milk to start the day, and the use of a chamber pot she kept under her bed.

Delter's faith and love for quilting were twin pillars in her life. Interestingly, she used a unique method to keep her smile bright - not a toothbrush, but twigs from walnut, cherry, or almond trees!

Delter helped take care of raising Jo when her father left her and her mother. Jo recalls her grandma patting her softly and lovingly on the top of her head - which as she recounted these memories earlier this month - she could still feel the pats today nearly 75 years later. Sometimes the value we receive by sharing on AncientFaces is the joy of bringing kindness to strangers…Josh Currie enjoys metal detecting and discovered in Northern Ontario Canada a Sterling Silver Birks Memorial Bar of an RCAF Pilot who lost his life overseas during World War 2.

The bar belonged to 27 year old Donald Cameron Walker, the only son of Robert and Ethel May Walker, who left all that was dear to him to fight during the WW2 where he tragically lost his life.

Josh couldn’t just sit on this discovery, and thanks to his 7 months of research and perseverance, was able to return this bar to family 72 years after Donald’s passing so that now Officer Walker’s Memorial Bar is displayed alongside his medals at his local Royal Canadian Legion.

In the words of Josh, “THIS is why I dig holes in the dirt!”.

Remembering Lynn Garcia as "beautiful inside and out".  Lynn was a beauty queen, volunteer at the Special Olympics, and teacher at an elementary school in Washington on the way to becoming a principal. Her life was taken from her in 1986 by her husband.

Randy remembers his girlfriend Lynnie fondly so many years later, and finds sharing his memories in some ways therapeutic.  Marsha remembers Lynn as her high school friend who was fiercely independent, and Cindy remembers working with Lynn at the Seaside Pharmacy soda fountain in 1968. That is what AncientFaces does - we provide family and loved ones, old friends, and coworkers a way to connect around relationships and moments from the past. Not only so that people like Lynn will always be remembered, but also to form new connections and uncover discoveries about our loved ones.

Memorial Day is our reminder of the military men and women who have lost their lives in service to their country. Lets honor them by sharing their stories to show the world that they are still remembered. 

March is Women's History Month, a time to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of women throughout history. As we reflect on the countless women who have made remarkable contributions, let's also take a moment to acknowledge the strength and resilience of the everyday heroines who paved the way for us.

Sarah Zumwalt Jump (1841 - 1916), a mother of twelve and wife of a Civil War veteran, is a shining example of this resilience. Despite facing numerous challenges in a time when women had few rights, Sarah worked tirelessly to provide for her family and build a better future for them.

Sarah's story is just one of many that deserve to be shared and celebrated during Women's History Month. Whether it's your mother, grandmother, or great-grandmother, we all have important women in our lives who have made a significant impact.

Dr. Ebenezer Bush “E.B.”, Jr. DDS, was a prominent African American dentist and community leader, born on March 20, 1920 in Shreveport, Louisiana. 

He began his education in segregated schools and went on to graduate from Tuskegee Institute and later Howard University's School of Dentistry, to become the first African American to establish a dental practice in Long Beach, California. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to community and economic development, education, civil rights, and employment. He became a Master Dentist, a pioneer in dental implant surgery, and completed a postgraduate residency in anesthesia at Harbor USC Medical Center. 

Happy Presidents Day and to those who have the day off, we hope that you are enjoying a long weekend!   As we commemorate Presidents Day, it's important to acknowledge the service and leadership of past presidents. However, it's also a good time to recognize that no president is perfect and that many have faced scandals throughout history. From political controversies to personal missteps, the scandals surrounding past presidents offer a glimpse into the challenges and complexities of holding the highest office in the land.

Shelley is a member of the community who has an impressive collection of photos she has gathered and saved from antique stores over the years. One of which is this photo of Kathrina “Kitty” Olga Banks (1882 - 1973) kneeling on a velvet couch with a tassel. Remember them?

Kathrina never married and spent most of her life working as a schoolteacher in Colusa County, California. She was active in various organizations in Colusa, such as the Colusa County Historical Society, the Colusa County Garden Club, the Colusa Women's Club, and the American Association of University Women. She was also a poet and often read her poems at literary events.

Discover the story of Catherine Putz, a farmer's daughter and Hungarian immigrant who fell in love with another Austrian-Hungarian immigrant farmer, John Selinger, and married in a beautiful Michigan wedding on May 9th, 1927.

She was born in Hungary, but moved to Michigan with her family when she was four and became a United States citizen at 21. She stated that she never attended school, but was able to read and write, speak German, Magyar, and English.

Susan B. Anthony (1820 - 1906) was a social reformer and suffragist who dedicated her life to the fight for women's suffrage and civil rights.

Susan was the second of seven children born to a Quaker father and Methodist mother. She formed a close partnership with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who was married with seven children. Together, they became leaders in several organizations dedicated to the cause of abolition and civil rights, including the National Woman Suffrage Association and the American Anti-Slavery Society.

It is with heavy hearts that we pay tribute to the legendary Burt Bacharach, who passed away last Wednesday, February 8th. Burt was a pioneering composer, songwriter, and pianist who blended elements of jazz, pop, classical, and R&B to create a distinct and recognizable sound that still resonates with audiences today.

Burt collaborated with numerous lyricists over the years, including Hal David, and produced a string of timeless hits including "What the World Needs Now is Love," "Close to You," "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," "Walk On By," and of course the near and dear to our hearts at AncientFaces - "Do You Know the Way to San Jose."

He was awarded multiple Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for Best Original Song for his outstanding contributions to the music industry. Burt was married four times, starting with Paula Stewart in 1953, followed by Angie Dickinson in 1965, Carole Bayer Sager in 1982, and Jane Hansen in 1993.

George Roberts (1766 - 1861), a distinguished veteran of the War of 1812, is one of those people I admire.

Little is known about his early life except that he was born a slave. What we do know is that in July of 1812 George was a free man who volunteered to serve on the privateer ship the "Sarah Ann" during the War. The ship made many successful raids against the British, but in September of 1812, the ship was captured off the Bahamas. Although the captain vouched that George and five others were born citizens of the United States, they were all taken captive and were under the threat of death for being treasonous British deserters who were fighting for the U.S.

After a prisoner swap was arranged, George was released and he immediately returned to privateering for the rest of the War. He joined as a gunner under Captain Thomas Boyle and was involved in the sinking of seventeen ships. When the ship returned to Baltimore he and the crew were welcomed home as war heroes.

Guy Rockwell Muldavin (1923 - 2002) was adopted into a privileged life by Abram Albert Zadworanski Muldavin and Sylvia 'Lily' Silverblatt. He traveled the world at a very young age and was schooled by private tutors in Manhattan, Switzerland, and Connecticut.

Guy's life of privilege didn't keep him out of trouble. He married at least five times, and when his second wife disappeared in 1960, along with her daughter from a previous marriage, he was the prime suspect for their deaths.  He was also suspected of two slayings a few years earlier in Humboldt, California. At the time the police just did not have enough evidence that could prove his wrongdoing in either case. He ended up living a full life and the last 22 years were in Salinas California with his fifth wife, until his death in 2002.

Then, twenty years later in 2022, police identified the body of a "Jane Doe" being that of Ruth Marie, Guy's fourth wife, who went missing in 1974. Thanks to advances in forensic DNA and good old fashioned genealogy detective work, police were finally able to paint a full picture of Guy Muldavin's life as a serial killer.
