IDENTITY

Social Identity is the identity that project to our peers and the world around us, but that may not necessarily be a true reflection of ourselves. In the modern age of technology and social media, it has become easier and more common to project ourselves as a different person behind a screen. The reasoning for people to do this is because we feel more socially accepted by society to conform or change how we think and show ourselves to other people. A lot of people find it hard to show the real them. “self-identity is obtained in two ways; through self-awareness and observation of others.” – Psychology Today

Fractured Identity refers to the theory that we have many identities that centre around a ‘core self’. We have experiences and influences that are so strong from the outside world that cause us to constantly change and alter into several different versions of ourselves. ‘The subject previously experienced as having a unified and stable identity, is becoming fragmented; composed, not of a single, but of several, sometimes contradictory or unresolved, identities’ (Hall 1996, p.598)

Creative Identity is the internal representation of yourself and your imagination, skills and talent. An artist with a strong creative identity has the ability to come up with ideas freely and easily. Creative identity in relation to photography is the ability to take photographs that show a certain angle on issues around the world and give an insight to the things we may not experience ourselves; it also means to create a work of art that express emotion and create an emotional response to the viewer.

Sensory Knowledge is the physical and mental connection we have with the world through thought and touch. Sensory knowledge involves the senses of the body i.e. touch, sight, taste, smell and, hearing. “Connect[s] with a hyper sensory aspect of experience’: ‘sculpture is neither visual, nor tactile, but a complex mixture of the sensory standardly conceived, with our awareness of our own bodies, and their possible interactions with the world.’ (Hopkins, 2004:166). Sensory knowledge can be the feeling of something not being right when you’re wondering down the street or out with friends; it’s your body’s comprehending your current surroundings through your senses.

Overdetermination is the theory that every simple, repetitive or insignificant behaviours has a deeper neurological connection to the unconscious, for example, bobbing your knee or knuckle cracking. Freud’s theory “all psychological (cultural) material is overdetermined… that even the most trivial behaviours…” such liking the colour yellow as opposed to green, “are the focus and expression of the most plural and deep psychological complexity.” (Mansfield 2000, p. 29).

The unconscious mind isn’t accessible to the conscious mind but influence decisions, emotions and behaviour. The diagram refers to Freud’s iceberg analysis of the levels of consciousness. Freud described the conscious level as the tip of the iceberg, things that we are completely aware of. The preconscious level is things we remember but don’t actively think about, such as, your address or the words to a song. And the unconscious level Feud perceived as the primary source of human behaviour, the part of the mind that influences you the most is the part you don’t see.

Essentialism is the theory that we all have a certain “essence” inside of us that is endless and permanent. The spirit gives us an identity that is unique and different to everyone else’s spirit. Essentialism also gives us characteristics that all of a specific being must have, such as, masculinity and, femininity. ‘The Enlightenment subject was based on a conception of the human person as a fully centred, unified individual, endowed with the capacities of reason, consciousness, and action, whose "centre" consisted of an inner core which first emerged when the subject was born, and unfolded with it, while remaining essentially the same - continuous or "identical" with itself - throughout the individual's existence. The essential centre of the self was a person's identity’ (Hall et al. 1996,. p. 597)
