And it got me thinking about if this book had any amount of longevity, someone would have to translate Milo’s janky handling of English to the target language. The hypothetical translator would literally implode from how much editing the translations would require, and it could potentially result in a book that sounds better than the original.

Also, all Sagittarius lives on the island? Like Sagittarius babies get dumped on the island sparta-style? And considering how ‘small’ Gardian is as a ‘continent’, how the fuck have the Sagittarians not been completely wiped out by another sign to stop the piracy?

Milo’s characterisation of Sagittarians implies a lack of literacy or record-keeping. For a writer who made their protagonist a historian/linguist (and not a historical linguist, but I will whip that horse skeleton later), you’d think he’d incorporate anything about oral traditions, but it’s too hard to underpay someone to draw sitting around a campfire telling a story about the stars than to write “this dude lied about the government cos he was big sad” on a scroll.

Also, if you’re going to use the Greek version of the zodiac in pseudo-North America, then including some Greek aesthetics could’ve worked.

I understand the premise of “write what you know”, but the caveat of that sentiment is that if you don’t know something, research the areas you haven’t previously studied. At the very least, research to confirm that your knowledge isn’t outdated or just false.

Milo has demonstrated he barely know how ecology works, how politics work, how sexism works, how abuse works, how clothes work, and increasingly, how friends work.
