Growing Hands, a series I drew quite a long time ago at this point at a bad part of my life. I do feel like I've grown up since I made these, which is a relief.
by the fourth or fifth time you "come back wrong" no ones even impressed anymore
btw if you ever ask me stuff about my characters I will be delighted for a long time I love talking about my guys
*reading my wip* wait this is good actually

The emotional connection between a writer/artist and a really obscure song that they associate with their characters is immensely powerful and cannot be explained
all characters need sexy white streaks in their hair trust me on this
YOU'RE A REGULAR WRITER! YOU CAN CRAFT A COMPLETE SENTENCE! YOU'RE A REGULAR WRITER! YOU USE THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF COMMAS! YOU'RE A REGULAR WRITER! YOUR PROSE IS GOOD AND RIGHT! YOU'RE A REGULAR WRITER! EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS YOUR VISION!
Quick Tips for Writing Descriptions
⟢ PICK THREE DETAILS MAXIMUM! your reader doesn't need to know every piece of furniture. Give them the broken clock on the mantle, the smell of cigarettes embedded in the couch, the water stain on the ceiling shaped like Italy. Their brain will fill in the rest. You're not writing an insurance inventory!!!
⟢ Use the senses people forget. Everyone does sight and sound, but what about: the metallic taste of fear, the way humidity makes your clothes stick, the phantom itch of being watched, that gross feeling when you touch something unexpectedly wet. GET WEIRD WITH IT
⟢ MOTION IN YOUR DESCRIPTIONS!! (Please?) don't just tell me the curtains are blue, tell me they're "shuddering in the AC blast" or "hanging limp like they've given up." Static description is a sleep aid. Make things MOVE
⟢ Your narrator's voice should COLOR everything! A depressed character won't describe the sunset as "beautiful mauve and amber streaking across the sky," they'll think "the sun's dying again, doing its whole performance art thing with the clouds"
⟢ Stop with the mirror descriptions! :( "She looked in the mirror and saw her auburn hair and green eyes" NO. Banned. Forbidden. Find literally any other way. Have another character notice. Show through action. Slip details in naturally. The mirror thing is lazy and we all know it
⟢ Similes and metaphors: COMMIT OR DON'T DO IT! "like" is not a get-out-of-jail-free card. "Her anger was like a storm" is BORING. "Her anger rolled in with the methodical inevitability of a hurricane, and he was standing in a trailer park in Florida" now we're TALKING
not enough scenes in books where characters kill someone and throw up afterwards. like something has to be done

Realizing the writing doesn't have to be done alone and is often more fun and more engaging when you're doing it with friends is a life changing experience.
I don't mean co-writing either. I mean having a friend or two who you talk through plot ideas with, who you bounce ideas off of, who you trust to tell you if something doesn't work.
Nothing is created in a vacuum and nothing can be created alone. Sharing drafts and ideas is a vital part of the creative process and it's a really fun part too.

i need more fiction especially period fantasy and sci-fi fiction to start writing psychotic characters who aren't just stock cartoon ideas of madness, or reinforcing the idea that psychosis is an exclusively modern and middle-class phenomenon. not just sinister assassins and mad kings and lunatic sorcerers and lobotomised prophets, i want the conventionally attractive magic sword wielding knight in shining armour hero protagonist from a little village in the middle of nowhere to be delusional and dysfunctional too. i want elves and dwarves and dragons and princesses with personality disorders on my desk by tomorrow morning.
[id: an image of Bugs Bunny dressed as a maestro, caption reads, “writers and artists cooking up amazing ideas, excited to create later”. it is followed by dishevelled Bugs Bunny edited to slouch in the chair in front of the desk, caption reads, “writers and artists when it's time to create”./end id]
media literacy would automatically go up 100% if people knew how to consume stories without self-inserting themselves into the characters' shoes. "if i were him..." you're NOT. you may relate to his story, his past, his traits, his quirks, his identity but the moment you start treating the story accepting what you feel/think as what the character feels/thinks, you're misunderstanding the story.

99% of "mysterious disappearances" esp of people in their 20s who start acting weird for 48 hours and then vanish are not mysterious, thats just when a lot of reality-obliterating mental illness tends to kick in and it's pretty easy to get a short circuit in your brain that makes you go family guy death pose in joshua tree national park. it's not any less tragic, it's just a documented phenomenon and not particularly predictable. its a big reason the medical advice is for people with a family history of schizophrenia to completely avoid weed and psychedelics. "people just go crazy sometimes" is a principle of human health that used to be a lot more accepted prior to the american midcentury and to a certain extent thats a healthier way to conceptualize and prepare for the risk, as opposed to the modern assertion that anyone acting weird is dangerous and broken forever.
you should have a rough outline of a plan for if any of your loved ones experiences psychosis, it really does happen a lot. UTIs can cause psychosis. taking drugs, even safe drugs, or prescription drugs, can cause psychosis. i was once prescribed a heavy regimen of vitamin D because i was deficient, but the doctor never told me to stop taking it, so i moved to california, stopped being deficient, and developed vitamin d toxicity with downstream hyperparathyroidism which triggered significant hypomania that was undetected and uncontrolled for yeeeeeeears. i just slowly got Weird and started making impulsive decisions based on slightly out-of-gamut beliefs. i drove cross country by myself to have a love affair. the love affair was real, the series of decisions leading to burning down my life in pursuit of it were based on not great brain function however. etc. you see what i mean. churchill mentioned depression being the "black dog who stalks us" (one reason for Churchgrim's multi-referential name) but theres another, stealthier dog called Insanity and it's closer to some people than others but man it sneaks up on you. every time i see one of those "guy gets weird and drives into the wilderness forever" missing persons stories i think "yeah i could totally pull that off"
"van gogh cut off his ear what a lunatic" you are 3 nights of bad sleep, getting unexpected upsetting news and taking a substance as benign as coffee at the wrong time away from doing the same hope this helps
^^ been there, not joking
there are NOT enough long form stories set in hotels, its the perfect set up like
the people who run / work in the hotel as the Main Cast permanent fixtures
the people who check in for extended stays who can stick around longer for various multi-installment plot arcs
the people who check in for a day or two to have that good ol' Monster of The Week rotation
the people who are basically Regulars cus this is their Hotel Of Choice who come and go to have plenty of recurring characters
several "trapped/away from home for the holidays" plot lines
it literally has everything, and hotels have the added benefit of being a built-in liminal space even when and because its filled with people!
more stories set in hotels NOW!
