Alex tried not to falter in her actions, some of what she was saying could be right. “Nah,” She said, making an action with her hands as if she was waving it off, “I hate to break it to you but I think science might be wrong this time. It’s pure talent.” 

“There’s no such think as pure talent. There’s genetics and there’s hard work.”

“Same difference if you ask me,” he shrugged. “Any chance you’d be open to a demonstration? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Hecate kid in action.”

Amy rolled her eyes at Austin. “You’ve seen me do things plenty of times, especially when they were a mistake.”

“Amy!” Juniper exclaimed, “Don’t even fucking touch it. You’ll only make it worse, I’ll do it. What did you spill?” She asked.

“Uh, Nail polish,” Amy replied. “And I can do it. You’re not the only skilled spell-caster in the cabin.”

“Wow, that’s big. I’m impressed.” She said, nodding as she spoke, “Absolutely, ever since I was a little girl. Some might say I’m a pro at it now, what do you reckon?” 

“I reckon it might be emotional distance, and a tiny bit of insecurity talking, but that’s just what science says,” Amy replied.

“Ooh–” Austin cooed curiously as he picked something up that wasn’t his to grab but he didn’t care too much. “What’s this?” he asked the other, twirling the ancient-looking around. “Something you guys use for voodoo magic or something?”

“Voodoo magic? We’re children of hecate Austin, not witches, and not all of us can spell-cast. But yes, we could use a book around here for that, just not that one.”

“Gods aren’t supposed to interfere too much remember?” Ronnie pointed out, “Besides, I’m not sure they quite believe that these recruiters exist but what do I know?”

“I guess, but I figured they could at least make sure we’re still safe,” Amy replied, slightly pouting.

“Oh, you know how to think? That’s interesting, did you learn how to do that all by yourself?” 

“Yep, all by my smart self,” Amy replied. “You know how to be harsh huh? Did you learn that all by yourself?”

“Yeah those will be handy,” Ronnie said, “Come on then.”

Amy walked with Ronnie toward the border. “Why are we doing this anyway? Can’t like the Gods, I don’t know, make something to reinforce the border?”

“We have had monsters break through the border before. And if there really are people out to get us. Then it might be a little worrying. The reason I’m here watching out, just in case.” 

Amy shrugged. “There’s enough of us to take some monsters, besides I’m sure the Gods would come up with another way to preserve the border.”

Berry nodded. “I get that. My girlfriend has the same issues. Usually we just relax and watch the stars. Or I bring out my guitar and we sing. Usually does the trick. Drawing works too.” He said as he sat next to her. 

“Usually what I do,” she replied.

“would you believe me if i said i couldn’t sleep?” they reply. “a child of hypnos, unable to sleep.  it’s practically unthinkable.” they cast a glance to her sketchbook, unable to really see anything she’s drawn. “wanna show me any of those constellations?”

“Trust me, I believe it,” she replied. “I know lack of sleep way too well.” Amy showed her work to Luka, before pointing up at the sky. “That one is right there,” she said to them. “It’s one of my favorites.”

“Are you trying to convince yourself? Or are you actually not worried?” 

“I’m actually not worried.”

“Actually Chiron sent me to get you,” Ronnie said, “You and I are supposed to be on guard duty at the border in about five minutes.”

“Okay,” Amy replied. “Lemme just grab my knives.”

She wanted to sleep, really. But tonight just wasn’t her night. Terrors plagued her dreams, as they often did; so, all she could do was sit in the dark, staring out at the water.

“What are you doing out here so late?”

“Can’t sleep,” Amy replied. “Happens more often than not honestly.”

luka could try and reason with themself, try and figure out why they were up so late, but they know they’d end up with barely any answer.  they’re out taking a walk around the camp, enjoying (or, rather, trying to enjoy) the night air when a voice breaks through their thoughts.  “sure,” they respond, easily settling down next to and getting comfortable within seconds.  “what’re you drawing?”  now that they’re seated, it’s almost a struggle to stay awake but - she did say she wanted company, and luka was there to help with that.

“Constellations,” Amy replied. “What are you doing up so late?” she asked them.

Berry saw the girl sketching something and he decided to walk over. “Oh, sorry if I’m bothering you. Just wanted to see what you were up to.” 

“It’s alright,” Amy replied to the other. “I just couldn’t really sleep.” She shrugged. “Figured some fresh air might clear my head.”
