ER S01E25 - Everything Old is New Again
Carter finding out what Benton said about him in his evaluation
"An exceptional student, well-trained, superior diagnostic skills, fast learner, dedicated, selfless, excellent bedside manner with patients. Far more successful at dealing with the patients' emotional needs than this instructor. Highly intelligent. One of the finest students I've ever had the opportunity to work with. Recommend high honors."

also, that scene where Langdon tells Louie that he stole his drugs is interesting, because yes, he is taking full ownership for what he did and how he was, which is good!
but also, he is painting Robby as culpable at the same time. Robby discovered Langon's stolen drugs and covered for him by giving them back to Louie instead of reporting Langdon for what he did
i'm wondering who knows what went down and how they presented Langdon's addiction to the hospital/administration. like was it in full context of Langdon being high while treating critical patients and stealing their prescriptions from them, and Robby covering for him when he found out. and i'm wondering on liability for the hospital/patients etc
so watching the scene i did actually think that it's a bit insane that he tells Louie all this, because not only is he admitting his own liability, but Robby's too, and he's exposing the hospital for the possibility of a lot of harm. though we could take it as well as Langdon maybe subconsciously betting on Louie's illness being so severe that he won't remember or be able to put together what happened in the first place, in the same way he bet on Louie's illness giving him the opportunity to steal from him in the first place
either way, it's got me very very interested in case we learn more about how Langdon's addiction was dealt with in the full context of what he did and how Robby covered for him
i am still thinking about that post that i replied to, because the more i think about it, it is actually a cold take on robby.
like, saying that robby pours all his empathy and compassion into his patients and doesn't have anything left to give to his residents/interns, it does make me wonder if we're watching the same series?
because the way he rushed to Dana when she was hurt, how he reacted to Collins when he found out she miscarried, and how he noticed she was off and kept checking in with her beforehand, how he took the news that Collins had aborted their baby. was that not all empathy, understanding, compassion, protectiveness. and also his motivation behind pushing Samira, he says he wants her to be as good as she knows she is. he wants her to find her place.
and even while he's absolutely enraged with Langdon, he nearly flushes down Langdon's stolen pills. in the end, he protects and covers for him stealing drugs from a vulnerable patient.
i understand itâs a difficult relationship to navigate when you care about someone who struggles with addiction. but the way robby treats langdon is completely unfair. heâs disappointedâ i see why. but addiction is a disease and as a DOCTOR robby should be at least a little sympathetic to that. the fact is: langdon is a young resident with TWO small children at home, and on top of this he battles an addiction to painkillers. thatâs a crazy amount of stress and responsibility to juggle. and that robbyâhis alleged mentorâcanât even give him a âhey good to have you backâ is crazy. canât even hear him out. doesnât even want to say hi to him. i suspect robby has his own issues that heâs projecting onto langdon but⌠idk it didnât sit well with me. addiction is also such a sensitive subject. itâs far more common than ppl realize. i get a little protective when seeing this kind stuff.
oh i think this is absolutely intentional. we saw it portrayed very clearly in season 1 that robby is very good with his patients, going above and beyond (to the point where he makes some bad choices, such as with david and with trying too hard with leah--just the first two that come to mind) for them. he pours all his empathy and compassion into them, which means he doesn't have any left for his residents/students or for himself. he's also a control freak who doesn't like being questioned. the fact that he puts off going to the bathroom multiple times because his patients need him--or at least he THINKS they need him and that no one else can do what he can? i think this is all really great character crafting.
he can really only accept his residents/students when they're doing exactly what he wants them to do. when langdon is able to be the "best resident," they're on great terms, but as soon as langdon shows weakness, robby takes it personally in a very unhealthy way and isn't able to display any of the compassion he does for his patients (and as many people have said before, it's incredibly telling that langdon didn't think he could ask for help; robby's reaction proves that he was right to be scared to tell the truth). when langdon "fails" him, he immediately switches his attention to whitaker.
he pushes collins to do something she's uncomfortable with and which has huge risks for her and only relents after a lot of pushback from her; this is one of the only times he backs down, and i think that's 100% because of their past relationship. he is really terrible to cassie about the david thing (making her face him in the last couple of episodes even though that can only inflame the situation? he's punishing her in the way we see him do langdon by putting him on triage when he comes back). he consistently gives samira a hard time for doing the exact same things he does, he doesn't pay attention to mel. the only times he really praises samira, mel, cassie are in the midst of/immediately after the mci which was a time when there wasn't time/space for any of the characters' personalities to emerge in the same way they did beforehand. everyone was in crisis mode, so he was able to see their strengths instead of becoming irritated with the way they do things differently (or in samira's case, exactly the same way) as he does.
and he doesn't take care of himself, either, leading to his breakdown in pedes.
so this season we're going to have all of these chickens come home to roost. langdon's done a lot of work and is on the right track (i assume we'll find out that things are still rough for him, but he's clearly changed a lot) and robby can't handle that because he feels (incorrectly) that it's an indictment of him. he takes everything too personally and he resents it. you've got samira who has a real mentor arriving in the form of al-hashimi (they hugged!) and robby is already set up to resent al-hashimi so there's no doubt this is going to widen the rift between him and samira. he (along with everyone else) has totally missed out on what's going on with mel, and she's going to reach her crisis point too. i don't know yet what's going to happen with cassie or trinity or victoria, but i assume something will.
and then you've got whitaker, who has basically turned himself into a mini-me of robby, directly quoting him on multiple occasions, taking on a kind of authority that he really hasn't earned. i think we're going to see this blow up in whitaker's face in some way (unclear how).
and on top of all of this, robby is in such a rough place that he's riding around without a helmet (contrasted with the bike guy and langdon's "you should always wear a helmet) in what has to reveal some suicidal tendencies. going to head-smashed-in buffalo jump? can we be any more on the nose? (i love it.)
all of this is going to collide and then explode at some point this season. it's got to. and i am SO looking forward to it.
thank you for this addition! (& thank you to everyone whoâs commented on this post, all of you have such great insights. i love tumblr users fr).
i agree 100% that itâs intentional. on the characterâs part and on the writersâ part. itâs great character complexity. i see both sides of langdon and robbyâs tension. maybe because i relate more to langdon is why i feel so protective over him. like i saidâaddiction is a sensitive subject and everyone deals differently with that reality and itâs consequences.
This is interesting to me, because though I agree with a lot of the above, I feel like central to all this is that Robby feels a lot of guilt for failing Langdon, and the seriousness of what Langdon did.
Because, of course, Robby is Langdon's mentor, the way Adamson was Robby's mentor. (And of course it's a boy's club, but that's another post!) And Robby clearly feels like he failed Adamson. During this shitstorm of a shift from hell on the day Adamson died, he finds out that Langdon didn't feel comfortable coming to him about his addiction, didn't trust him. Added onto that, Langdon sees through Robby and is quite viciously truthful about Robby's poor mental health in a way no one else is at the hospital.
So I think the avoidance and harshness of Langdon isn't a complete picture if you don't take in Robby's guilt complex, and fear of the mirror that Langdon holds up to him, along with everything else. Their confrontation at the end of season 1 was so delicious precisely because of the layers in it, and the amount of vitriol on both sides, since Robby unfairly blames Langdon for Robby's breakdown.
And now, Langdon finally wants to have an honest conversation with Robby, but Robby's slid into actively suicidal, so he's even less capable of doing that. Ironically, it's the same reason he feels he failed Langdon in the first place.
Furthermore, I don't think this post goes at all into the seriousness of what Langdon did. Langdon should have lost his license. He was on drugs while treating critical patients. He was stealing drugs from patients, directly endangering patient care ieg. people's lives.
And Robby protected and covered for him. Robby almost flushed Langdon's stolen pills! But since the pills were Louie's, it would endanger patient care not to return them, so that's what Robby did, still effectively covering Langdon stealing pills. Which makes Robby culpable, too. That's very bad!!
And when told to go to rehab, Langdon threw Robby's breakdown in his face.
So I think that it's understandable that Robby isn't saying "Hey, good to have you back!" Like just imagine your boss being five seconds from flushing your stolen drugs down the toilet after you've been high while treating critically injured people. That's a huge part of the baggage between them right now.
And also a huge sign of how much Robby does care about Langdon. He's willing to go against the law for him, just like he was for that patient who wanted an abortion. So this is where I disagree: It's not just the patients that Robby will put himself on the line for and have compassion for, and really, Robby's reaction of anger is justified in the face of what Langdon did.
Robby's explosive reaction isn't just because Langdon is an addict, it's in the context of Langdon stealing drugs from patients, endangering patient care, and centering Robby in a really terrible position. Had Langdon come to him before doing all of that, Robby's reaction likely would not have been as explosive, and I don't think it's fair to judge Robby for how he reacts out of the context it happens in.
actually i am done being patient i want the 2nd episode and i want it nowww
