Yeah, itβs a necklace La Salle wears IRL. I also went looking a while back to check for myself, hence having the above images saved for reference.
(Which fits for Benton to be wearing because he is established as a fairly devout Christian and wears cross necklaces on other occasions.)
That said, in the episode itself, we never see it up close or clearly enough on the whole so⦠I support people headcanoning it as whatever, for funsies. But it is sadly not canon. ):

It's "not accurate," but they aren't accurately fucking either.... fandom does what they want. So people see what they want. It's more interesting that it's the token Carter gave him.
This is also a show that has Carte'rs birthday change at least twice. Probably three times if you count the episode that shouldn't be named. Things remaining or looking consistent is not something this show does.
At no point onscreen does Benton give another explaination. Therefore, it can, in fact, be the token. It may bother you, but it's going to continue to be called that in fandom and fanfic.
I would argue that Benton is definitely not "Fairly devout" in Christianity. Raised, yes. But he can't even recite the prayer over a dying baby. That's not a devout christian. he goes to a church. Jackie pretty much says it's his default when he got caught in trouble. He's fucking a married woman.... He's not devout.
Yeah, I don't agree either with the description of Benton as a devout catholic, but that's less to do with the mistakes he makes in his life and more to do with just not remembering him being particularly religious.
That said, I'd appreciate it if you came on my posts with less of a weird attitude. I enjoy finding out little tidbits about the series. It's enjoyable to me, hence the post on my blog. Nobody is saying you can no longer believe that this necklace is the El token.
