Ask Meme Prompt

This is a word I didn’t understand until a few weeks ago, but after looking at some roleplay blogs it was easy to figure out.

A mun is the author who writes posts for their characters. When you’re roleplaying, people may refer to you as “the mun” when they want to speak to you out of character.

Urban Dictionary explains it better than I can, so here’s their first definition:

[Derived from the word “mundane”, a mun is the author writing for a character in an online RPG. Can also be used as a suffix to denote a reference to a character’s player rather than the character. Synonymous with certain connotations of roleplayer, author, player.

Muns are the writers, who write back and forth each describing the actions and words of their of the character they have chosen. I’m going to use an imaginary person named Sue as the example of a mun.

Muses are the characters being written about by the muns. Sometimes people prefer to use character to refer to a muse, but muse seems to be the one I see the most often. In this case I’m going to use Spider-man as the muse example.

Threads are the stories written back and forth by two or more muns about their muses. Let’s say Sue has met Paul who has Batman as a muse. They write a thread together, which involves a scenario in which Batman gets bitten by a genetically augmented bat and Spiderman teaches him to use his new abilities.

Canon is the official storyline of a show/film/book series that people pick a character from. So in canon Batman never gets bitten by a bat, and isn’t trained by Spiderman.

AU is short for Alternate Universe. In our example Sue and Paul have created an AU where Batman has actual bat-related powers and fights crime alongside Spiderman.

Starters are the first post of a thread, which set the scene for the thread. This blog contains sentence starters, which are things muns can send to one another via ask to start a thread with. In this case perhaps Paul sent Sue an ask with “It bit me” which started the entire alternate universe they have that thread in.

OC is short for original character, and these are another type of muse people have. In this case we’re going to use the example of another person named Jude. Jude has created an OC for the Batman universe named Kevin who is a guard at Arkham who often ends up in trouble for some reason or another.

I have noticed a startling number of people who make doing so difficult, though I think it is entirely on accident, so a little reassurance is in order!

I see a lot of these posts like support x type of muse. Which are, fantastic. I understand the sentiment behind them, I do. But here’s the thing, even when made with good intentions: They create kind of a circlejerk. What I mean by that is, people reblog them, but don’t take action. They reblog these things to feel good about themselves for two seconds and look “super progressive” by showing that they unlike other parts of the RPC like these kinds of muses and then they don’t do jack diddly. So with these people not doing jack diddly, it makes more posts like that circulate because the issue talked about before is still a problem despite all these reblogs of similar posts.

So what’s my point?

Those posts don’t do anything.

It sounds harsh, I know, but it’s kind of like the Tumblr equivalent of Facebook stuff where it’s like: One like = One prayer.

So what should be done instead?

Maybe communicate ways how people can support, trans, female, POC, disabled muses instead of being like oh I like these muses. How do you do that???? Reblog their promos!!! Like their starter calls!!! Send them asks!!! Recommend them to your friends or your followers or even both!

Reblogging something like “I like x muse” or “you should appreciate x muse” doesn’t do anything. All I’m saying is, take more action than just reblogging a post complaining about the issue.
