            giuliana's   head   tilts   while   she   chews,   humming   quietly.   "   okay,   you're   right   about   that.   i'd   ring   both   your   necks.   "   she   teases   with   a   gentle,   playful   push   to   her   cousin's   arm.   brows   knit.   "   oh   please.   i   refuse   to   be   barefoot   and   pregnant   so   the   shoes   won't   be   too   big   to   fill.   at   most   it'd   just   be   a   matter   of   hiring   staff   for   the   house.   "   giuliana's   words   are   spoken   flippantly—   waving   away   the   thought.   she   doesn't   know   if   marriage   and   children   are   in   the   cards   for   her.   it's   not   too   late—   never   too   late   as   her   sister   tends   to   argue,   but   giuliana   doesn't   have   a   single   clue   on   what   the   future   holds.   hell,   she   couldn't   even   tell   someone   what   the   next   hour   may   hold,   let   alone   the   next   month   or   even   the   next   year.   she's   absentmindedly   stabbing   her   fork   in   pasta   when   amara's   words   pulls   her   out   of   spiralling   into   an   existential   crisis.   she   wills   herself   to   not   show   too   much   emotion,   choosing   instead   to   pull   the   same   face   she   uses   when   taking   client   calls.   "   i   am   seeing   someone   unseriously,   but   it's   just   physical.   don't   go   running   to   the   thorn   about   it.   "   giuliana   laughs   genuinely   and   shakes   her   head.   "   i'm   well   aware   of   the   barista   and   it's   not   him.   hey,   i'd   never   pass   up   a   free   drink   whether   it's   a   latte   or   a   margarita.   "   she   sips   her   wine   and   draws   in   a   soft   breath,   shaking   her   head.   "   no,   no   one   from   the   wedding  and   you   know   nothing.   "   giuliana   sets   her   fork   down   for   a   moment.   "   i didn't   slipped   out   of   nowhere   !   if   i   did,   it   was   to   just   go  home.   you   won't   find   out   who   it   is,   ames.   it's   just  ...   whatever   it   is.   "

 “hmm   ,”   she   hums,   finally.   “acceptable.”   she   takes   a   small   bite   —   measured   ,   delicate   —before   dabbing   at   the   corners   of   her   lips   with   her   napkin   ,   precise   and   unhurried.   “i’ll   foot   the   bill   anyway   ,   love.   my   treat.”   her   gaze   lifts   to   giuliana   then   ,   something   softer   slipping   into   her   expression   ,   though   it   never   quite   loses   that   polished   edge.   “so   ,”   she   says   ,   lightly   licking   her   lips   ,   “what’s   new   with   you   ?”

            she   and   the   waiter   watch   with   bated   breath   as   chloe   scrutinizes   the   chicken.   she   gives   the   poor   waiter   an   appreciative   smile   when   the   food   is   approved,   reminding   herself   to   leave   an   extra   tip.  "   mm,   if   it's   your   treat   then   i'd   like   to   take   a   slice   of   cheesecake   to   go.   "   giuliana's   only   teasing,   lithe   fingers   tucking   her   hair   behind   her   ear   with   a   delicate   shrug.   "   nothing   new,   "   per   usual.     "   i'm   funemployed   as   the   kids   say,   so   i   spend   the   day   doing   what   i   want.   "   she   sips   whiskey   sour.   "   what   about   you   ?   should   we   be   expecting   to   hear   wedding   bells   again   or   something   ?   "

          french   fry   is   dipped   into   small   ramekin   of   barbecue   sauce,   bubbly   coke   zero   nestled   nearby   while   she   listens   and   a   quiet   laugh   escapes.   "   eh,   i   like   hanging   out   with   you   so   ain't   no   skin   off   my   nose.   "   she   doesn't   have   a   job   anyway,   so   what   else   would   she   be   doing   right   now   ?   giuliana   dusts   imaginary   salt   from   her   fingers   while   leaning   back   in   the   booth   and   folding   her   arms   across   her   chest.   "   mm,   evidence   would   say   otherwise—   the   wedding   was   barely   forty   eight   hours   ago   and   you're   ready   to   board   a   gulfstream.   i'd   believe   you   were   breaking   up   with   me,   frankie.   "
