SHOUICHI

Reason for amnesia: Accident that led him to washing up on a shore. The details of said accident are a major spoiler.

Do they get their memory back?: Yes, towards the end of the series.

“Fun” facts: Shouichi has complicated feelings around knowing who he once was, and tries to be positive but he is scared of knowing. He likes to cook, garden, do magic tricks, ride his motorbike, clean, and generally does a lot of housework. Not very good at math, but he's very strong and tries to be there for the people he cares about.

SIFFRIN

Reason for amnesia: magical memory erasure / their home island was erased from the whole world's memory when they were on a boat just outside the affected area. his family, history, culture, language, everything is gone and is still actively being redacted/erased years later / All memory of their country and anything associated with it was wiped from everyone's memory. For most the cast, it's just a conversational tidbit. "How weird that no one can remember what that country was called." For Siffrin, who had borrowed his parents' boat in a running-away-from-home prank at the time the incident happened, lost everything. / Their home island (and any memory of it) dissappeared due to wish craft

Do they get their memory back?: No / Nope / No. They occasionally remember tidbits, but if voiced outloud the universe will right itself and he won't even remember he was talking. / No

HAJIME

Reason for amnesia: Double amnesia actually. Hajime Hinata joined Hope's Peak as a Reserve Student. Unsatisfied with lacking talent, he joined the Izuru Kamukura project. This succeeded, but his entire identity + memory was erased As Izuru Kamukura he spent years bored, watching the world burn as a Remnant of Despair. But then he was supposed to be rehabilitated via a artificial reality which erased his memory and Izuru Kamukura, leaving only Hajime Hinata behind

Do they get their memory back?: Got his story narrated to him in the game. He at least remembers most of it during the anime, but it is unclear if he remembers everything he did as with the other Remnants of Despair

“Fun” facts: Basically every character is an amnesiac except for the mastermind of 1 and V3, but Hajime and Rantaro, who have forgotten more than most others, are voiced by the same voice actor. Also, Octagon (Sorry I had to)

YAMI

Reason for amnesia: Sealed himself and an evil god away in an ancient item, using his own name as a passcode and erasing his memories/erasing the name from history / Being trapped in the Millenium Puzzle for 5000 years

Reason for amnesia: Comes from his own world to ours in an accident and woke up naked in the woods with no memory except his name

AGENT 8

Reason for amnesia: Being kidnapped after a battle and also being put into a simulation / Their memories were extracted from them in partial sanitization. The memories were compressed to mem cakes and awarded as reward for missions in the Deep Sea Metro.

Do they get their memory back?: No / Unclear. Collecting the mem cakes doesn't seem to have restored the memories fully, but Marina has been working on a virtual reality to return the mem cakes to the souls of victims of the sanitization which would return their memories too. Eight did test it out but it wasn't working properly then and nothing is said if they did get their memories back.

“Fun” facts: They like the sea breeze although they hate the sand and cannot go into the water. / Agent 8's appearance and gender is chosen by the player, but official artwork often depicts her as a girl. Agent 8 is also known as Number 10,008 or Eight.

INGO

“Fun” facts: stuck in a time loop / time loop torment nexus sufferer. the magical amnesia (and trauma) gave them also more regular memory issues - they forget words and things easily, lose track of stuff, at one point he has difficulty with remembering the names of people he has been travelling with for months / They like woodcarving and walking into strangers' homes. / They are the time looping protagonist of the game! Their favourite food is palmiers (though I've also been told since last round it's actually Malanga Fritters so who knows) and they are allergic to pineapples! Uses He/They pronouns!

TIPPI

Reason for amnesia: It either happened when she got visciously attacked and/or cursed by her forbidden love's father (a member of the "Tribe of Darkness", so certainly some horrible messed up magic was involved) or when the wizard Merlon subsequently found her half-dead and had to transfer her soul into a Pixl (that little butterfly thing she is now - she used to be human!) to save her life. The lore is conflicting about specifically when and why she lost her memories, but suffice it to say she went through a lot so it's not really surprising.

Do they get their memory back?: Yep, she slowly regains her memories throughout the game and by the end has remembered everything. Which kind of sucks for her because then she realises that the villain they've been fighting the whole game is her boyfriend... They eventually sort it out and get a happy reunion, get married and live happily ever after (although possibly in some sort of afterlife depending on interpretation.They might be dead. This game is DARK)

HARRY

Reason for amnesia: Did all of the drugs and alcohol in the world lmao / He goes on a bender, yells "i dont wanna be this kind of animal anymore" and loses all memories / Bender gone right
