Since it has been ages since the last update to Rise I figured it might be a good idea to write up a Star Wars style opening crawl to go before the next chapter. The next update is still in development but I thought it would be cool to post the recap here as well prior to the release. Please enjoy!

Commander Shepard is dead. Killed by the villainous Matriarch Aquilla after discovering the asari’s true identity...the ancient Goddess herself; ATHAME. Leaving the crew of the Normandy under the command of Miranda Lawson, the disillusioned heroes pursued a forgotten Cerberus legend. Poseidon Station; the Illusive Man’s hidden archive of Cerberus’ greatest assets. Buried deep below the ocean world of Talus, Miranda and our Heroes made an uneasy arrangement with a local Terminus despot, the enigmatic DEALER. In exchange for the Cerberus treasure buried below the Dealer provided transport to Miranda and her estranged wife JACK. With no intention of honoring their arrangement Miranda dispatched the Dealer’s envoy after arriving inside the station and the couple proceeded inside. After discovering many relics of Cerberus’ past Miranda revealed her true motives to Jack. The secret of the Lazarus project was a device she invented for recreating and transferring consciousness and memories into a host body. She called this device the Echo and it was her intention to erase her mind to allow Shepard to return in her own body. However before Jack could assist her in this endeavour the pair made a shocking discovery. There were more than just artifacts preserved inside Poseidon Station. Miranda and Jack came face to face with a ghost when the long dead leader of Cerberus itself materialized before them. The Illusive Man had returned.

Elsewhere- The Year 2207

The biotic shackles cut deep into the flesh of her wrist and hands. A narrow trail of purple blood followed behind the matriarch as the two commandos dragged her forward by her elbows. She hadn’t anticipated the brutality of her impending execution but after everything she’d done, Athame could hardly argue with it.

She’d had several recurring adversaries over the course of her many lives. Commander Shepard, The Illusive Man and Marion Corvus chief among them. Yet none of them had ever carried the pure hatred for her quite like the Shadow Broker. It had always struck the matriarch as odd. For the broker was at his core, just another puppet master who sought to line his pockets with power and credits in equal measure. Yet her failed attempts to save the galaxy had snubbed the broker’s business on more than a few occasions. And Aquilla would be lying if she said she never did find enjoyment in it.

The broker’s men had taken her to the Eclipse station as promised but it was clearly no longer in the mercs control. The eclipse had made an agreement with Thessia to broadcast the humane execution of the galaxy’s most hated woman. However all they had really accomplished was assembling a public stage for the broker’s own twisted show.

Athame’s weary eyes scanned the bodies lining the halls of the station. Most of them were asari yet there were a few salarian among the dead. She studied one poor matron, her brains painted the metal wall behind her while her body slumped forward still suited in her eclipse uniform.

She felt a hard kick on the back of her head and turned over her shoulder to see the leader of the Broker’s men with her shotgun slung over her broad shoulders. “You think you can judge me, Aquilla?” Aya asked. The commando was still dressed in her own eclipse armor.

“Of course not.” Even in her battered state Athame still spoke with a calm, strong voice. “You’re a merc. Your allegiance is to credits and the Broker has many.”

Aya rolled her eyes, “Didn’t just do it for the creds. My husband was a krogan. Guess that must seem like a joke to someone like you. 700 years of marriage and you ended it with the push of a button on Illium.”

“And how many bondmates did you widow today?” Athame replied without a moment’s hesitation.

Aya jerked a thumb towards the stiff body of a salarian, “I gave ‘em a chance. Which is more than you ever did. Not my fault they picked the wrong side.”

The continued their journey to the station’s main hall. The eclipse had been using the station as a prison barge. A mobile fortress of sorts that the mercs could use to transport their cargo in. Even in the midst of the great war, there were still slavers in the terminus willing to pay for able bodies. Now those prisoners stood with their faces nearly pressed to the glass of their translucent cells, some of them cheering on the execution of their former jailers while others just sat in silence.

When they reached the end of the hall the large double doors slowly pulled open with a hydraulic hiss. Beyond the doors resided a circular chamber with a vaulted ceiling. At the center of the prison block rested a makeshift stage. The mercs had hobbled together ammo crates and boxes to create the platform and surrounding it was a slew of camera equipment that the thessian matriarchs had been kind enough to supply the eclipse. A large collection of torture devices were displayed on the stage, each of them more savage than the last. However they were not what held the matriarch’s attention.

After all the lives she’d lived over countless decades and universes, few things surprised Athame. Yet the sight of the well dressed Yahg standing tall at center stage with his massive arms tucked behind him was one thing she never imagined she’d see.

The Shadow Broker brought his hands together in a taunting display of applause.

I have been very busy for the past 2 years when I started working at my current job and it slowed updates to the story considerably. However I have never for one second entertained abandoning the story. With the remaster out I’ve been getting more motivated than ever to get back to it and work is already underway on the next chapter.

A couple thousand words are already in the can on the new chapter but i’ve taken to the habit of making each update as significant in terms of both plot and size as I can so it may be a litte bit before its finalized and released.
