Struggle
We don't see enough Appalachia (pronounced App-al- ATCH-a) acknowledgement in these parts of the interwebs.
There is a lot of rich culture in that part of the country. Sadly it is often reduced to stereotypes and Mountain Dew.
The magic and cultural practices of mountain folk is deep-rooted and long-standing.
It's also not advertised and opened up for eager consumption. If you know, then you know.
And I mean the mix of practices from escaped slaves, Native American herbalists, and German folk magic . . .
I'm going to go back into my corner until I have the actual energy to type out all of my feelings.
On 25 July, 1946, two young African American couples - George Dorsey, his wife, Mae Murray who was seven months pregnant, Roger Malcom, and his wife, Dorothy Malcom, were in the car of the men’s boss, Loy Harrison, who was driving them home. On the drive home they were stopped by a mob of white people, who were blocking off the Moore’s Ford bridge in Georgia. The two men were dragged from the car and beaten. One of the women recognised one of the lynchers and as a result, the women were dragged from the car and tied to the tree beside their husbands. They two couples were then tied to a nearby tree and shot. Mae Murray had her fetus cut out from her body.
Despite the crime taking place in broad daylight, nobody was ever arrested for the brutal murders. One possible motive was that earlier in the month, Roger Malcom had allegedly stabbed a white man, Barnette Hester. He was released on bail which was paid by his boss.

Fighting Covid When Kept Home
This was shared on a Covid survivor group…have heard many of these before but it seems helpful: HOW TO FIGHT COVID AT HOME when you are not hospitalized.
“When the nurse came in to discharge me, I asked her, What can I do to help fight this at home? She said:
1. Sleep on your stomach at all times with Covid. If you can’t sleep on your stomach because of heath issues sleep on your side. Do not lie on your back no matter what because it smashes your lungs and that will allow fluid to set in.
2. Set your clock every two hours while sleeping on your stomach, then get out of bed and walk for 15-30 min, no matter how tired or weak that you are. Also move your arms around frequently, it helps to open your lungs. Breathe in thru your nose, and out thru your mouth. This will help build up your lungs, plus help get rid of the Pneumonia or other fluid you may have.
2. When sitting in a recliner, sit up straight - do not lie back in the recliner, again this will smash your lungs.
3. While watching TV - get up and walk during every commercial.
4. Eat at least 1 - 2 eggs a day, plus bananas, avocado and asparagus. These are good for Potassium.
5. Do not drink anything cold - have it at room temperature or warm it up. Drink Pedialyte, Gatorade Zero, Powerade Zero & Water with Electrolytes to prevent you from becoming dehydrated. Water with lemon, and little honey, peppermint tea, apple cider are good suggestions for getting in fluids. No milk products, or pork. (as a singer I know milk products produce phlegm and always advised my students to have none for 3 days before a performance)
6. Vitamins D3, C, B, Zinc, Probiotic One-Day are good ideas. Tylenol for fever. Mucinex, or Mucinex DM for drainage, plus helps the cough. Pepcid helps for cramps in your legs. One baby aspirin everyday can help prevent getting a blood clot, which can occur from low activity.
7. Drink a smoothie of blueberries, strawberries, bananas, honey, tea and a spoon or two of peanut butter.
We always hear of how Covid takes lives, but there isn’t a lot of information out there regarding how to fight Covid when you are not critical. I hope this helps you or someone you know, just as it has helped me.”
(Wow, @thetimetostrikeislater wish you’d had this info when you were ill)
@cptdorkery @fortheloveoftrekuniverse @peridotsarelongterm
I definitely wish I had this info when I contracted Covid back in March😓 it was so hard on my lungs! and I couldn’t go to the hospital because it was too full. Stay safe my friends.
This is all a lot like what I had to do for bad respiratory issues/pneumonia, just to add an “it’s probably sound advice”.
Also don’t be breathing in any outdoor/cold air. your lungs do not need even a single inhale of anything cold. nope.
People on this website will reblog positivity posts about Indigenous peoples and our religions and supporting our spirituality
until they find out that some of us practiced cannibalism and human sacrifice and then suddenly no one can read and everyone has places to be
I’m speaking from the perspective of an indigenous Nahua who was born and raised in southern México. I’m very familiar with the cannibalism and sacrifice practiced by my people, and know that countless other Indigenous peoples have practiced both
Colonizers boil down the incredible achievements and scientific discoveries of Mesoamerica into ~human sacrifice~ and then have the gall to lecture me about the morality of human sacrifice???
Dismissing an entire civilizations achievements because their religion included sacrifice is absolutely peak colonial mindset. You are projecting your modern western colonial morality on something you cannot, possibly comprehend and think you are being helpful and respectful and you are not
I could write a book on my ancestor’s culture of sacrifice. Please understand that the way you likely learned it in school was racist and colonialist and taught from the perspective of white people. Please understand that trying to argue about it with indigenous people or using it as a gotcha to “prove that we’re bad actually” is incredibly disrespectful and ignorant.
And while we don’t practice human sacrifice or cannibalism anymore, the history of it is incredibly sacred and important to us. I will absolutely defend my ancestor’s practice of cannibalism to the death from non native people
instead of being racist about it, maybe you can try picking up a history book written by an Indigenous person for once in your life
If you can’t respect the ~scary~ indigenous cultures, then you have 0 respect for Indigenous peoples at all
also, big take here — but ancient European cultures also practiced sacrifice (to varying extents and historical sources are scarce but yeah. somewhere these colonisers’ ancestors are laughing)
I mean, even forget that kind of stuff- like yes, my forbears for example had a habit of hanging people from trees as tribute to Tyr and The Gallows God, and the fabled Blood Eagle was done in tribute to the Allfather, but even if you forget all of that stuff, europe’s history of Human Sacrifice gets super recent.
Like, by what definition of Human Sacrifice does drowning a woman in a lake for being a witch because Jesus said to, not qualify as an act of Human Sacrifice for The White Christ? What about torturing people to death when they won’t convert, and/or torturing them until they do convert and then killing them to stop them from going back? How’s that not Human Sacrifice? What about when crusaders would roll up into a Jewish village and murder every man, woman, and child they could lay hands on, all to appease their deity? Why wouldn’t that count?
Those are rhetorical questions obviously: the answer to “which definition allows for this” is “the one where it doesn’t count when white christians do it,” of course.
the assumption that CSAM/CSEM (child sexual abuse/exploitation material, also known as child pornography) can only be found on "dark" or "deep" web sites and not surface sites is a dangerous and false assumption. this content is on this website, on facebook, twitter, reddit, its in more places than most people assume.
survivors know this very well, but in case anyone doesn't believe us, check out these (abbreviated) numbers by the NCMEC regarding ESP reports of CSAM-- only a fraction of the total reports, keep in mind, and by only one organization. knowing the scope of the problem can better prepare people to fight the spread of this content if they come across it. this particular brand of ignorance regarding just how proliferate CSAM is on surface sites is one of my pet peeves on this subject, so i feel justified w the long post.
and as always... if you see this content, REPORT IT.

honestly this is a hot take but i automatically distrust ayone who uses wickr because its so BLATANTLY used for trading CSAM like legitimately that has to make up like 95% of its total usage. like. lmfao.
and genuinely. i present this fully knowing that its an unironically hot take, and as someone who is extremely paranoid about government, private security and data, and the internet as a whole, i get why its a hot take.
but this is why i genuinely believe that unregulated, absolute end to end encyption shouldnt be allowed. my hot take is that if we can prevent even a single instance of a child being sexually exploited via CSAM by not allowing for bar-none end to end encryption, then we should in fact not allow bar-none end to end encryption.
of course, NCMEC says this better than i ever could:
"If tech companies shutter their visibility to this dehumanizing abuse of children by adopting end-to-end encryption without a solution in place to safeguard children, those who are sexually exploited will be invisible and left as collateral damage while offenders will continue to create, share, and collect child sexual abuse images without detection.
If end-to-end encryption is implemented without a solution in place to safeguard children, NCMEC estimates that more than half of its CyberTipline reports will vanish. The transmission of child sexual abuse images and sexual enticement messages won’t stop because this criminal activity is encrypted. End-to-end encryption will simply close a curtain to what happens online, enabling encrypted platforms to become lawless environments where the lack of oversight and visibility into criminal activity emboldens offenders."
Hi Neil! I'm not the anon who asked, but I know that a lot of people don't know that g*psy is a slur - I didn't until a few years ago. I wasn't trying to be cruel. I genuinely didn't know that it was even referring to a different ethnicity. I thought it was synonymous with being a nomad or a traveling salesperson or traveling performer. So to help out for future anons, I was wondering if you could please put together some resources on the Romani people and their culture/history? Thank you.
Sure thing! Hopefully these links here could help:

since international romani day is coming to a close i’d like to remind non-romani of a few things:
gypsy/gipsy is a slur, if you’re not romani it’s probably best u dont use it. while we’re at it, don’t call us gippos either
gadje/gorger/gorja and any other variant word from any romanes dialect that means “non-romani” is NOT a slur, and it’s most definitely not a slur towards white people specifically
you’re not a gypsy because you have a “free spirit” and wanderlust and wear flowy skirts. you’re not gypsy because you want to be one. if you are a gadje, you have no right to call yourself gypsy, full stop.
romani is not a fashion statement and we’re not here for your fetishization/romanticization/aesthetic (appreciating romani fashion and culture is fine. what’s not fine is appropriation or pretending to be romani when you’re not.)
do not invalidate the racism romani people face. people don’t even consider us human. i can’t even tell you how many times i’ve read comments and messages from people literally calling romani “subhuman” and meaning it. don’t silence romani voices when they speak of the racism they’ve experienced
romani people are varied and diverse. some of us are white-passing, a lot aren’t. lots of us are mixed, and when we are we can be any number of bi or even multi racial identities. we can be almost any religion or even atheistic, we’re all over the world, and we speak many languages (there are many, many dialects of romanes alone)
and lastly: we deserve to be respected as your fellow human beings
We are not a silent minority. People just don’t listen. Include Rom in your support posts that cover everyone else, include Rom in your advocacy, include Rom in your discussions of politics, include Rom in your talk of the repercussions of fascism and racism, include us. We’re done begging. We’re TELLING you.
