The Dream Dimension is populated by the entire human and animal population of Earth, but most of them are Sleepers who spend their entire time in the Dream Dimension asleep. On the other hand, Muses are awake and conscious in the Dream Dimension while they sleep on Earth, and asleep in the Dream Dimension while they are awake on Earth. Sleepers usually become Muses between the ages of thirteen and fifty, though there are exceptions. The Dream Dimension is also populated by Monsters who live exclusively in the Dream Dimension and act malevolently towards Sleepers and Muses. Anyone who dies in the Dream Dimension dies on Earth as well, and vice versa, so the Muses of the Dream Dimension use magic and combat to defend themselves and the Sleepers from Monsters.

The geography of the Dream Dimension consists of natural landmasses and oceans that are shaped like Earth’s geography, as well as artificial geographic features that come into existence via magic. Due to the Dream Dimension’s magical properties, many things, including natural objects, are black, dark blue, and magenta in color. The main part of the Dream Dimension is a planet the size of Earth, and this planet is augmented by satellites such as a natural moon and magically created floating islands of various sizes. The moon is considered sacred ground, and the Muses of the Dream Dimension have an agreement to leave it to its natural state.

Kondou Hibiki, a high school student, has recently won a youth piano competition. He expected newfound attention from his schoolmates, not magical powers! But it soon becomes clear that Hibiki is a Muse, a person who wakes and lives in the magical Dream Dimension while asleep in the Waking World. In the Dream Dimension, Hibiki goes on adventures with other Muses, including people who he knows in the Waking World: Nakano Chouko, the popular Student Council President in the Waking World and a Muse named “Butterfly” in the Dream Dimension; Miyamoto Fuku, tomboyish athlete by day, “Revolutionary” by night; Satou Ayaka, a polite and intelligent childhood friend of Hibiki’s who goes by “Chromatic” in the Dream Dimension; Hashimoto Jun, who is kind but shy and has a lot to learn about her role as a Muse named “Ocean”; and one of the youngest Muses, “Untitled”, who is Satou Maya, Ayaka’s sister in the Waking World. But the Dream Dimension is under attack, and if someone dies in the Dream Dimension, they die in the Waking World, too. Can Hibiki and his friends save the day?
