Andy Shauf is a breath of fresh air when it comes to reviving an old school acoustic vibe. His voice is as soft as the music, but everything is so well arranged/orchestrated that you get to hear and enjoy each instrument that comes into play. I’ve seen some comparisons to Paul Simon.
I’ve noticed an unexplainable aesthetic in regards to a lot of Japanese 80s pop/ballads. A lot of them are of course heavy with bass slap and synths. Kirinji is a little different compared to the rest of the tracks. It still employs heavy synth use and similar old school vocals and structure, but with a clear modern sound. Shintaro Sakamoto’s This World Should Be More Wonderful is unlike everything else and only here to keep with the Japanese vibes. It’s more of an old time ballad from the 40s.
Similar to the last post about dad rock, here’s some more great stuff but purely prog rock. Great bass playing in general.
My dad told me to share this one... Kidding! But I’m sure most dads would approve. Dad rock is best rock. Rush’s The Necromancer has some of the best bass I’ve ever come across.

YMO, like Kraftwerk, is an electronic band formed in 1978 that is required listening if you want to know about the origins of electronic music. Haruomi Hosono is the founder of YMO, and his song Sports Men, is a real catchy treat. Get a load of this country version sung live!
Yoshinori Sunahara’s Earth Beat, although from 2001, shares a similar style to what YMO put out in 1993 with their album TECHNODRON, specifically their track WATERFORD.
P-MODEL, an electronic band formed in 1979, feels like a much more experimental version of YMO. It’s lead by frontman Susumu Hirasawa, who seems better known for his work in creating the soundtrack for things like Paranoia Agent, and Paprika.

Can’t Find My Heart: Wonderful horn-like and synth fills on the wordless parts.
White Lies
Take It Out On me: A modern song with an 80s tone thanks to its old school persistent bass line, nostalgic synths, and vocals.
Declan McKenna
British Bombs: Thoughtful and strong anti-war lyrics wrapped in a catchy indie pop song that’d make anyone want to sing along.
Pulp
Common People: Similar in sound and pace to Declan McKenna’s British Bombs. The build up makes the song.
Saint Motel
Puzzle Pieces: A playful piano with an equally playful cadence. Happy as hell despite the subject matter.
The Phoenix Foundation
Flock of Heart: Similar to the last song in style and playfulness, but slower, and with a lovely xylophone. Similar to Green Tambourine by Lemon Pipers.

The Last High: A timeless classic about love set to catchy synths

Might Be Right: Really lovely guitar hooks + bass work. Rock’s back on the menu boys.
