Ronald David “Ron” Mael (born August 12, 1945) is best known as the keyboardist, primary songwriter, and resident oddball for the band Sparks along with his younger brother Russell, a brother who is in the forefront of handling vocals Ron sets himself apart with his quirky on-stage appearance with conservative almost drab clothing except for sporting a Chaplain-like mustache he sometimes remaining motionless but, will make a subtle move with his head or a movement with his face will speak volumes. His brother, Russ, is very active and has an unusual singing voice that helps balance Ron’s subtle moves between the sound and their relationship. The band has been making music for over 50 years. The band isn’t quite a household name. It gained popularity in the mid-’70s to the ’80s, with a small but solid and loyal fan base. Mael can be quiet or even eccentric off-stage in interviews and is also known for breaking into dance and engaging in comic mime routines that show his sense of humor. I recently watched a documentary on Sparks, which interviewed fans and discussed how the band had influenced their lives. Ron and Russell discussed the various changes the band underwent. Ron is fun and light-hearted and continues to make music with Sparks.
