Tenchi Galaxy? Was the title AI Tenchi Muyo already taken?
Perhaps… anyway, I'm don't consider myself an artist but I have used AI since the first LLM have come public, and lately especially for Tenchi art. I have done a lot of AI Tenchi art the last months, I have come to experience the many fails AI likes to do to these particular set of characters.
Almost none of these things I point out are a sign that it's AI in itself, although some are way stronger than others. Some of can be taken as mistakes, stylistic choices, or otherwise explained away. But taken altogether, here is why I believe these pictures are redflagged as heavily AI assisted as I find the totality of them odd.
I do believe that an artist worked on them, but IMO AI assistance was heavily involved.
For me, personally, the bigger issue is that it seems to have been a western artist and not a japanese artist and you're getting a purely western product. For me, it struck me as western somehow the moment I saw it, but three of the characters portrayed wearing Kimonos in the deceased/burial style seal it. Maybe it's the studio's own inclination towards Ayeka, Sasami and Mihoshi, IDK.
The main issue I had working with AI is its inconsistencies even with the same characters on the same project, it's wanting to change and insert things at random, changing the hair for no reason, and generally messing with the characters in ways human artists are not prone to do. Ayeka's ponytail splits and reforms for nonsensically, hair ends like the girls signature sideburns split a lot -- in my Tenchi attempts I've seen AI do this countless times while it's much rarer in past official AIC stills.
This proposal Ryo-ohki has two completely different designs, between the red poster and blue poster. Why, if the same artist and eye?
In particular, IME AI also does not like unique hair and will adjust it like I've barely seen before in the anime.
The following is just what I and some actual artists have seen and taken issue with. It's not meant to be exhaustive.
It should be noted at this time the Studio is denying using AI.
Her crab-like hair is ridiculously difficult for and it seems to have forgotten it on one side of her head except a single strand.
Her hand seems to have an extra finger, it sure does not seem shaped like a thumb) and there seems to be a growth in between her pointer and middle finger. A classic sign of AI.
Her shoe on the left seems to have a split, is it from the thrift store? Not consistent with the right.
Also compare the size of Washu's hands and shoes to Sasami's hands are shoes. It's like they got to choose and there was a mixup somewhere. Sasami has the big hands and small feet, and Washu vice versa.
Just how tall should this character be? She's about a head taller than Ryoko and even outdoes Mihoshi by a lot.
Just an odd stray hair by her red hair bands.
Hair growing out her ears? When I'm making AI Tenchi characters with arcing-out sideburns, it just loved to start to lower than above the ear.
Her temple ear droplets are green, but on her more hidden ear, this is red. It can be more easily seen on the video with black background. AI likes to randomly add details for no real reason IME.
Again, hair split on her bowl cut. AI likes to do this for some reason. Ryoko has this to a lesser extent.
Just the belt knot again.
His rat-tail is also split but I gave it a pass.
Kanji inconsistent with blue poster.
The positioning of her left sideburn is extremely odd and seems to come out of the left side eye. Is she crying sideburns?
Also sideburns starting out odd and lower than expected.
Eyebrow collision with hair.
Rolled up shorts look look more like big plastic shields.
Ghost hand. Seems like the connection to her body is not possible unless it takes the weird angle blocked by Ryoko's arm.
Lack of her green forehead symbol (lineup has it).
Weird fuzzy patch under chin.
Dress strap to arm inconsistent with opposite side of dress. Dress strap is see-thru, inconsistent with other side.
Her hair goes down to Tenchi's head, which is fine, but for some reason creates a weird skinline in Tenchi's hairline.
Her sideburn splitends, more on it with Ayeka.
Her temple has wooden tiara circle but forehead shows no sign of tiara.
IME, AI likes to splitend sideburns, ponytails, even Tenchi's rat tail and this is not typical of TM which tends to keep them in one piece.
Ayeka's ponytail is off color from rest of hair and nonsensically split in half before rejoining, AI likes to do this IME. TM artists less so.
AI is not happy with unusual hair and often tries to change it. See the split in Ayeka's bowl cut and lengthened the front section ever so slightly.
Belt with no attempt as showing a knot.
Red stripe is a new addition.
Missing necklace shown in other poster and lineart.
Has two wholly different designs in this set of pictures. Two completely different faces.
This one and the blue sticker sheet she's with generout white tufted ears, pink ridges at end of ears (normally the ridges weren't at the very end but more subtle and near the end on the bottom side).
In the red poster and red sticker sheet, she has a much different look, with the ear tufts considerably smaller and the ear ridges inexplicably being white hair tufts.
Ryo-ohki is completely missing from the line-up, even though she was in the line-ups of the five sketchbooks, even if just perched on her favorite person's head :) This is not an AI failure, it's just a lack of due diligence.
Tenchi is missing the newly acquired red stripe on his jacekt. Inexplicably, it's even on him on the same sheet in the trio image. AI likes to forget such details.
I don't believe his energy blade is in line with his sword handle. AI had a tough time with such details when I tried such tricks.
Ryoko's neck band is white when the lineup established it as red.
Her dress has these round circular emblems that seem to be missing on the other side.
Ayeka's ponytail is very meagre. In my attempts at Ayeka's and Sasami's ponytails, this was one of my major problems, as they have unusually long voluminous hair.
Idk if some of these were deliberate stylistic choices or what. Kiyone famously had red round earrings. This got changed out and the resulting dark blob is not always consistent. When Mihoshi had earrings, I remember unobtrusive gold dots, now it's these big large dark ones. IME, AI liked to add earrings to women models unasked for.
Last Note: The new bossmonster woman seems to have taken a niche 90s design from Ryoko and even her gun for the most part. And Kiyone's hair style and maybe Nagi's face.
Idk what to make of all this other than it does not seem like good level of work for a proposal and if this is the quality control for something important like that, I don't expect any better of the end product.
My thanks to multiple people who have contributed, they know who they are.
