THIS WAS MY FACE TOO AT THE END OF THE EP

I haven’t seen anyone else point this out yet, but the reason Morty has so many adult friends is because he desperately wants a good adult role model. Every single adult in his life has failed him in some fundamental way, to the point that even though Morty knows Reese isn’t technically real and never was he still wants him around, he wants someone to tell him it’s not his fault, someone who doesn’t yell at him or make him scream into his pillow. He wishes that person was Rick. Rick was most likely Morty’s first friend, and remains his only consistent friend. But that’s the thing, Rick isn’t Morty’s friend, he’s his grandpa. Rick is on Morty’s level in the worst way possible, he quite literally has the emotional maturity of a 14 year old boy, and sometimes not even that.

“You can’t love someone out of hurting you.”

“I hate you. I hate you. I hate you.”

I love that this episode had a lot of classic RaM gags, like Rick’s drinking, over the top murder, and some mind fucks for the characters. But each of these jokes take on a completely different light in this episode because of how Morty focuses it was. None of it is funny, it’s just uncomfortable to watch. Well, it’s funny on its second watch, but holy shit.

The way this episode ended was brutal too. Just Morty becoming increasingly uncomfortable as Rick slams back drinks, only for Rick himself to say

“You’re gonna turn out just like me.”

TO MORTY’S FACE

We got a lot of really great lines finally spoken out loud in this episode, like with Rick admitting to needing Morty, or Morty saying how he can handle fucked up.

I think this is my new favorite episode, god I love how this season is so focused on their dynamic. Fuckkkk.

Other highlights include:

-Cloud guy had to be a reference to the Goodbye Moon Man episode, he was also a goddamn delight to have during this episode

-Holy shit I was so 14 when I started watching this show, Morty is quite literally my teenage experience, not even just this episode this whole season so far

-Fucking hell Rick, just tell your kid you love him, stop getting a robot to do it for you. AND WHEN YOU DO STOP BEING A JERK ABOUT IT

-“Wicked boy. Evil Boy. You’re not getting any inheritance out of me. You want me dead.” Absolutely gold star, those lines fucking killed me. But yeah Rick, he kinda does.

-This episode is just about proving that everything Evil Morty ever said was right

-Rick watching circle porn, man what is with you and spheres
