AGH, alright hold on, Iâm on vacation, but fuck it, this AU has me by the throat.
âHi, youâve reached Zoey! Please leave a message after the beep.â
Rumiâs heart ached in a way she hadnât felt in some time. How often did she hear that message? If she expected Zoey not to answer, maybe she wouldâve called when Jinu was insisting earlier, but⌠well, Rumi had hoped not to interrupt more than she had to.
She made her choice to wait, but since when did Zoey not answer her? The answer was unfortunately simple: Now. She wasnât answering now. Because she was busy. Her wife is on the other side of the world being prettied up and being with Mira.
Some part of Rumi wondered if she called Mira if they would pick up. Her thumb hovered over their name, but she couldnât quite bring herself to press it.
If Zoey, her wife, was too busy, then Mira would be busy too.
Slowly, Rumi wrapped her arms around her chest, trying one more time. Praying that the first time was just a fluke.
Four rings. âHi, youâve reached Zoey! Please leave a message after the beep.â
âMrs. Jung?â Someone calls. She can distantly hear the announcer preparing to call her onto the stage. Somewhere over the sound of her heart tearing softly in her chest.
Rumi lets the phone fall from in front of her as she ends the call just before the beep. What was the point in a message? She made her decision, and her wife was too busy for her.
âYes, Iâll be right there.â She calls back, though sheâs only vaguely present now.
She made her choice, she waited until now. Holding herself barely contained the pain of what she already knew. That this was nothing compared to what Mira and Zoey were doing. They both deserved their praise and time together.
Sheâd just have to smile through the hurt. As she always did.
Because what did her pain matter to her wifeâs success anyways?
