The thing is that I get how someone could get frustrated or bored with all the side tangents in Moby Dick but I think the book being written in first person just makes it rather endearing to me. This isn't just Herman Melville trying to stuff in as many whale facts as could possibly be relevant into the book, no. This is Ishmael taking us aside and going "hey, here's some context that might prove useful to have :]" and "I love whales and I hope you can understand why" and I just go omg thank you Ishmael, my good friend Ishmael wants me to know these whale facts.. wow :]

among the playlists on my phone, there is one called “wizard music,” which is an hour and eighteen minute collection of atmospheric, vaguely magical-sounding instrumentals that I compiled the year my cousin’s oldest kid wanted to do an escape room for her birthday so my mom bought a kit to turn one’s own home into an escape room and it happened to be generically wizard themed. For reasons beyond my understanding, I can’t bring myself to delete the playlist, which means I guess that some tiny part of my brain earnestly believes I may yet encounter a second occasion that calls for an hour and eighteen minutes of wizard music? Unclear.

Every chapter of Moby Dick could literally be titled like youtube clickbait.. 'Only one bed (and he's a Cannibal!)', 'My top three favourite things to do with sperm'. 'A whale is a fish. FIGHT ME'. 'Sailor's tasks I carried out while tied to my boyfriend.' 'At least we're not on that other ship who founded a religious cult'. 'The captain had 4 Parsis HIDDEN BELOWDECKS', 'Why Sperm is vital to culture and the economy'. 'Coffin building with the bf'. 'I told this story in a South American bar and everyone LOST their MINDS'.
