Allison was still dressed in the clothes sheâd worn for her practicum at Lothering Hospital as she made her way into The Huntsman. Spotting an empty booth, she slid into it quickly and placed her backpack on the seat next to her as she stretched out her back and neck a little. At this time of day it was busy enough that she was certain someone she knew might be around, but she just needed to take a few minutes to herself before she even spoke to a server.
marcus-caulfield:
The fae still didnât know if his plan to start studying this summer would actually pan out. Perhaps the administration would not allow an unregistered student, a gardener, attend classes like that. Even if it didnât work out, it was a step forward anyway. At last he had made the choice to quit self-sabotaging and stop using his circumstances as an excuse to keep stalling. He could continue to learn and prepare himself if he truly wanted. The kitsune had showed him that. âIâll have to check what courses I can take that adjust to my work schedule, but I saw there was one about water supply and water quality management. That one interests meâ the Welshman explained with a smile of his own, please to be sharing this news with the person that inspired him to take that step.
âCareful thereâ the man mentioned with a soft chuckle as Allison bumped into him, his hand immediately moving up to take hold of her arm to keep her from losing balance. It was reflex motion, one he didnât think about. What he did think about was when his hand stayed there, gently wrapped around her arm. They were not walking anymore and Marcus wasnât even sure which one of the two stopped first. The rain was pouring over them but it was easily forgotten, it wasnât even a nuisance of any kind to keep feeling the droplets all over his skin and further drenching his clothes. Without a word, his fingers slid up Allisonâs arm, caressing her skin with tenderness, with reverence even. In a single motion he was revealing much more to her than he had ever said with words.
The fae took a step forward, standing closer to her than he ever had in full control of his actions, with no potions altering his behavior in any way. He was always so respectful of her personal space, maintaining an appropriate distance, but this time something was different. There was a reason, a purpose, why he had taken that step closer to her. So his free hand slid to the back of her neck and Marcus ended that small gap between them, kissing her.
Allison watched as a few of her fellow graduates roamed through the streets, clearly taking in Lothering for maybe the last time before they returned back to the normal world. Despite the rain, it didnât seem like as many people were in a hurry as before, and she slowly turned her gaze back to look up at Marcus as he described the courses that interested him. They did nothing to spark anything in her mind, as anything to do with water management or conservation had never been a priority or an area that she could ever think to be passionate about. Water in general, unless it was in the form of rain, could often make her uneasy. She never took baths, and her showers would put military men to shame for how quickly she got in and out. The only reason a small smile tugged at her lips was because she could hear in Marcusâs voice and see on his face that just the fact he was talking about this was proof of a turning point in his life.
When he grabbed hold of her, Allison suddenly tensed, afraid that she had let a small spark fly off her body. As she took a deep breath, she realized nothing had happened but it was something else that was making her feel as though every cell in her body was crackling with the electricity that was always running through her. Droplets of rain that had been caught in her hair slipped down the side of her face in heavy beads as she turned to look at his hand, watching it as it moved slowly up her arm and left a trail of goosebumps behind. The rain wasnât even cold, yet she found herself on the verge of shivering as she turned her face up to look at him when he stepped closer. She barely had time to take a deep breath before he kissed her.Â
A wave of energy pushed out from the center of her chest, creating an energy shield around them before she could try to control it. Rarely one for public displays of affection, Allison found herself completely losing focus of where she was or who might be watching as she reached her arms up to close any remaining space between them and kissed Marcus back.
marcus-caulfield:
The streets of Lothering were mostly deserted. People had already gone to seek refuge from the storm inside their homes and those few that were still out were running to do so. The two of them were the only ones who mainted a rather tranquil pace, enjoying the rain rather than rebuff it. The question caused the man to chuckle for a moment and he glanced to the side to look at her. âNo umbrella stillâ he confirmed. He had been meaning to get one but there had been bigger priorities on his mind âBesides, itâs easier to get work done with just a raincoat than holding an umbrellaâ.
With the mention of the umbrella he couldnât help but think back of the last time they spoke of such an item. His thoughts werenât focused on the umbrella, of course, but the events that surrounded that particular conversation. Such thoughts were forced out of his mind when Allison asked him about his plans and his mind had to refocus on that. âYes, for the most part. But Iâve been thinking about what you said, thoughâ. The kitsune had been very supportive about the idea of him getting back to study. He didnât have enough money to pay tuition but that didnât necessarily have to be an impediment to keep learning âIf I have the time, I thought of maybe taking a class or two. Iâd be unregistered of course, but if the administration has nothing against it I could be there, just listening to the classâ.
Allison wrapped her robes a little more around her as she walked, careful to keep it at least at mid-calf or higher to avoid any mud she might kick up from hitting it. She was looking down to be careful where she stepped as he spoke about his potential study plans for the summer, but her head quickly turned to look at him when he mentioned actually going to classes. Even if he was unregistered, and couldnât be tested, it still was exciting news to hear. And a major step for him, she knew that more than anything. Rarely was she ever surprised by someoneâs choices, but her surprise at his words was evident as her lips parted suddenly and then started to turn up into a small smile. âThatâs great,â she said softly, though the words almost didnât need to be said. âWhat courses were you thinking of taking?âÂ
She turned her attention forward just in time to notice a large puddle in her path and quickly side-stepped, bumping into Marcus as she did so. âSorry,â she muttered quickly, brushing her dampened hair back as she glanced back at the large puddle. âCorenna doesnât want me to get anything on my robes.â

His attention went back to the kitsune when she spoke. He nodded after her words, accepting the fact that she had to leave already in spite of how short a visit this had been. That didnât feel right for the fae, though. That they would just say goodbye to each other like this. It was likely that they would text each other over the summer, but still. This brief encounter wasnât enough to bid farewell to someone he cared about as much as he did with Allison. âIâll walk you back to the academyâ the Welshman said with a light smile. He didnât phrase it as a question on purpose to prevent getting a ânoâ. He wanted those extra minutes of walking her back.
He went to grab the set of keys he left on the nightstand and slipped them into the pocket of his jeans. Then he just led the girl out of his apartment. He would have grabbed an umbrella but as was made clear the day of the opposites potion, he didnât own one. It didnât worry him, though, even if it was starting to rain already. As for Allison, he suspected a thunder kitsune wouldnât mind the storm.
Allison hesitated for a moment before nodding at Marcusâs suggestion, pulling her robes around her a little more on her way out of the apartment. She hardly ever minded being out in the rain, and the coolness of it was almost a bit of a welcome relief, but she didnât want her dress getting ruined if she could help her. Corenna had been the one to buy it for her, and sheâd feel bad showing up only to have it soaked through. Looking up and down the street, she tried to impress the image as much as she could into her mind, trying not to focus on how much she would admittedly miss it while she was away. Nowhere had ever felt like home quite as much as Clearbrook and Lothering, a fact she always felt a little guilty about when she knew the Carrows wished she would come home more. Three months hadnât seemed so long when she agreed to go home for the summer, but it suddenly seemed like a very long time.
Looking back toward Marcus, she tilted her head to the side just a little. âNo umbrella still?â she inquired, starting to walk in the direction of the castle. She knew it was one of those things that was often forgotten until the need for it arose, but it still struck her interest that he didnât have one. Turning her attention to her feet, she was careful to step around areas where puddles of water and mud were already forming. âAre your plans for the summer still mostly just working?â
A small smile stayed on his lips as the girl explained how things went in the event. It may not have been anything extraordinary, but it would have meant something for Marcus to have been there for her. It wasnât the graduation itself he cared about, after all, it was her.
The gardener laughed at little at the mention of the accidental photobombing. âIâm really glad it went wellâ. Such an event could get tedious with all the protocol, but a college graduation was still an important moment in peopleâs lives. It made him happy to know Allison had gotten hers and that things went smoothly.
The loud sound of thunder made him turn to his open window. He headed in that direction only to see the the first droplets of rain had begun to fall. âLooks like a big storm is comingâ he mentioned as he looked up to the dark grey clouds and closed the window. He usually liked to leave it open despite the rain, but not when such a big thunderstorm seemed to about to start.
Allison looked toward the open window, breathing in a bit more deeply that usual to catch the scent of a storm in the air. She knew that the few droplets of water on the window were an indication that people would soon be scattering from the streets and her foster parents would probably try to find a way to contact her to insist they start to get going soon. After all that sheâd told them about the area, about the supernatural world in general, she could assume that even a simple thunderstorm in a place like this might scare them. She was still staring out the window when he closed it, eyes trained on the dark clouds as a faint flash of lightning brightened the sky. A small, comfortable smile formed on her face at the sight, finding it to be an all too fitting end to her undergraduate studies at Clearbrook. She knew her foster parents would likely fall asleep on the train ride home, but she couldnât imagine doing anything but quietly looking out the window and watching the storm as it raged ahead. Sometimes she considered watching storms to be her own personal form of meditation, the only thing that always helped her feel a bit less burdened, a bit more at home wherever she was.
Realizing suddenly that sheâd probably been staring out at the sky for a little too long, she turned to Marcus again and the smile turned wry for a moment before she let it fade again. âI should get going,â she admitted quietly. âMy foster parents are probably waiting.â She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and gave a small nod. âHave a nice summer, Marcus.â
He wished he could have attended the graduation ceremony and it showed in the way he looked at her before he shook his head âNo, I couldnât go. There were no tickets leftâ. He probably should have asked earlier to secure his spot in the event. But he was glad Allison had decided to come to say goodbye, appreciating that sheâd thought of coming to see him before leaving for the summer.
âSo how was it? Did I miss much?â the gardener asked with a soft smile as he stepped aside, letting her into the apartment.
Her lips curved into a frown for a few moments when he revealed he hadnât been able to attend. Even if it probably was boring for a lot of people to sit through, there was a certain emotional energy about any graduation ceremony that made it intriguing. Allison had found herself watching a lot of her classmates to see their reactions throughout the speeches and receiving diplomas. It was very strange to see so many new kind of responses that she might not have expected from some people that sheâd seen in the halls for the past few years.
âNot really, the speeches were decent,â she began to explain with a small shrug. They were decent, nothing overly spectacular and just as motivating and with just as many clichĂŠ quotes as was to be expected. âEverything went smoothly.â She left out that sheâd gotten highest honors for her degrees, not really feeling it was necessary to mention it. Plenty of other people had gotten it. âThe most you missed was everyone trying not to accidentally photobomb each other afterward.â
Hearing it was the kitsune was a pleasant surprise. He knew today had been the graduation which unfortunately he wasnât able to attend. He figured he wouldnât see much of her on this day given the ceremony and the fact that her parents had come to town. It was to be expected her time would be spent with them and probably celebrating the momentous event.
Marcus buzzed her in and went ahead to open the door for when she got upstairs, waiting for her by the door. A warm smile appeared on his lips at the sight of the girl âCongratulations, Allisonâ was the first thing he said to her, glad that sheâd graduated, that this stage of her life had come to an end and she would go on with her graduate studies.
She waited patiently to be buzzed up, glancing up when she heard a faint clap of thunder. The dark clouds that were coming in overhead were moving at a speed too fast to be a natural occurrence, but it wasnât that surprising to her. A number of thunder kitsune graduated, and it wouldnât be all that odd for one to think that a thunderstorm was the perfect celebration. Or they just wanted to show off one last time. A bit of a chill breeze came by just as the door unlocked and she quickly came inside, glad to be greeted by warmth again.Â
She started up the stairs, smiling a little when she found the door open and Marcus waiting for her. âThank you,â she murmured, still a little on autopilot as she responded to the words sheâd heard constantly throughout the day. âDid you make it to the ceremony?â
@allison-watts
The fae had just gotten back from the academy after his day of work and a short training session of boxing. Marcus took a shower, put some laundry in the washing machine and arranged some things in his apartment to keep it clean and organized. It was a quiet evening as most, spent on his own. Hence his mild puzzlement when he heard the buzzer, he was expecting no visits. âYes?â he asked as he pressed the button, wondering who it was downstairs.
The graduation ceremony was just what was expected - traditional and nothing particularly exciting about it. They read off names and honors and people filed by in robes and there were hugs and pictures taken after and then it was time to go. Allison honestly went through most of it feeling a bit like she was on auto-pilot, even with the picture taking. It was strange, to be leaving Clearbrook even for just a few months. When she returned, itâd be different. She wouldnât live on campus, with her housemates, and sheâd be taking much more advanced courses in just one area. It almost seemed unreal. While Aryn and Corenna helped to pack up the remainder of her things and get them to the train, Allison went into Lothering to say a quick final good-bye to Carter and Ryan if she could find them. On her way back to the Academy, she passed by the street that led to Marcusâs and decided to make a quick turn. They still had plenty of time before the train left, and Corenna and Aryn loved just walking around Lothering to witness all that was there. With an assigned guide, of course.
When she got to the apartment, she hit the button to buzz up to Marcus, waiting for his response to come. âItâs Allison,â she said. âI just came to say good-bye.â

Marcus wasnât even sure when the graduation ceremony would be, but he figured he still had time to see if anything could be done to be able to attend. âMaybe so, but if itâs possible, Iâd like to go anywayâ the gardener reassured her with a light smile. A question crossed his mind, and now was as good as any other time to ask it âAnd will you be leaving soon after graduation? Or are you planning on spending some time here before leaving?â.
She nodded and smiled a little. She really only had Corenna and Aryn coming to the ceremony, during a brief time period when the ward on humans would be lifted for peopleâs parents coming to the graduation. Assuming no one else would want to come who didnât already have a way in, sheâd given away her extra tickets and suddenly regretted that she hadnât kept at least one or two just in case. âJust a few hours,â she admitted. âIâve been boxing and sending a lot back home.â
âHonestly, I donât knowâ he admitted with a light shrug. If it was up to him heâd certainly be there. He wasnât friends with other students that would be graduating but would like to attend the ceremony for Allison. The fae was glad and proud of her achievements in the academy and her future in the graduate program. âI donât know if all faculty and staff are invitedâ. The likelihood for a gardener to be invited was pretty slim, but the fae would make sure to ask. âIâd like to goâ.
Pressing her lips together a little, she listened, unsure if it could be as simple as someone who worked at the school asking for a ticket for it to actually happen. She nodded, folding her arms behind her back as she looked up at him. âThe ceremonies are a bit boring, anyway,â she admitted, but then again, speeches and calling off names wasnât exactly exciting. âIf you didnât go, you wouldnât miss much.â
His âplansâ may not be such a grand way of spending a summer vacation, but it would not be wasted time. Marcus had some relative freedom to make of the academyâs gardens what he liked, just as heâd done with the cherry trees by Adaria Park. Heâd been thinking of planting some new types of flowers, rarer ones, an idea that was just reaffirmed by the kitsuneâs comment. âI will, I promiseâ the gardener replied with a smile. He still had some seeds of the Skeleton flowers heâd given to Allison for her birthday, maybe he could plant some somewhere she could see them often. And there was of course the idea of acquiring some new seeds of other unusual plants heâd always liked.
When he assured her heâd send pictures, she smiled back at him briefly and nodded. Taking a sip of her drink, she looked back out at the dance floor for a few moments. Realizing sheâd finished off the drink, she set it on the nearest table by where Marcus had set his drink. âAre you going to the graduation ceremony?â she asked curiously, unsure of just how much of the faculty and staff were invited.
He nodded in understanding. Growing up, the fae never had to work during summers but he knew some of his old friends did that either to help out their families or to save some money for themselves. âI think I will, yesâ Marcus nodded with a light smile. The idea of staying and working didnât bother him, despite it being during the summer vacations. âI honestly have nothing better to do, and I could use the moneyâ. Working during the summer period would earn him some extra cash and it would keep him occupied.
She nodded a little, figuring it wasnât worth it at that point to press and ask if he was going to consider taking a summer course. She knew how much certain events had set him back recently, and making some extra money probably couldnât hurt. âYouâll have to send me pictures of the gardens,â she suggested, knowing sheâd probably miss the castle and the village after only a few weeks back in Glasgow. Any reminder of what sheâd be coming back to when her graduate program started would be welcome.

âHow come?â the Welshman asked, his curiosity piqued regarding Allisonâs summer plans. He wasnât sure if she meant her summer would be a busy one because of things related to the graduate program of due to something else entirely. âI have no plansâ he admitted with a shrug âI think Iâll stay here for the summerâ. Travelling was barely an option considering his little spending stunt on April 1st had left him a little short on money. Even after he managed to resell the suit, he wasnât able to obtain the full amount heâd spent when he bought it. Marcus was saving his money now more than ever. âSomeone has to take care of the gardens during the summer too, so I guess itâs best if I stayâ the fae added, but even he knew that was an excuse. It was easier to say that than admitting he no longer had anyone to visit during vacations.
âIâll be working a lot,â she stated, something she guessed he could relate to considering the amount of effort he put into his job. Serving food to people wasnât exactly as fulfilling as beautifying a campus might be, but it paid well and she often made a fair amount in tips, especially if it was a wedding event and people were eager to be drunk and generous. Learning that heâd be staying in the village for the summer, she nodded a little. Clearbrook was always fairly populated even during the summer, with people wanting to take classes or just needing a place to stay over the break. âAre you just going to be working here?â She wasnât sure if he might consider taking just one summer course, when classes were less crowded.Â
He almost regretted the way in which he led up to the question, realizing how it must have sounded like. The fae could only imagine the sort of questions Allison couldâve imagined heâd ask, and in relation to what topic. Definitely not the best wording he could have used to then ask about the graduate program. âThose are great news. Iâm glad to hear soâ Marcus said with an earnest smile. It was rather gratifying to learn things were following the path they should regarding the studies of the kitsune. âSounds like youâll be very busyâ he mentioned in a light-hearted manner. It was to be expected that as she continued to advance in her education there would be more work and more time to be dedicated fully to her field of study with interships and such. âIt also sounds like youâre happyâ the gardener pointed out with a warm smile because it was hard to miss how excited the kitsune was about this next step in her life.
She nodded slightly, knowing that next year was certainly going to be busy at the very least. It wouldnât be much different than any other semester, though. Having two majors that required such different courses made her grow quite used to being all over the place as she tried to hold it together. It might even be a bit of a relief to focus on just one area of coursework, even if the other time would be taken up with a, likely unpaid, internship. âSummer wonât exactly be free, either,â she muttered, taking another small sip of her drink. Sheâd be working for her adoptive motherâs catering company, trying to earn as much money as she could before coming back. She smiled a little, guessing she really didnât need to confirm that she actually was rather content at the moment. âWhat are your plans?â
