Have you read “Great Maria” by Cecilia Holland? Kind of blew me away; I was expecting nothing, but it’s one of if not the best medieval-period historical fiction novels I’ve read. Set during a fictionalized version of the Norman conquest of Islamic Sicily, really psychologically grounded in the time. Not to be like, “TW: literature”, but since I’m recommending I feel I should say that there’s a violent rape depicted at a distance early in the book, and the MC’s marriage is like you know troubled as you might imagine a marriage between a teenaged girl and a professional soldier to be—he hits her periodically throughout the book, and though it’s never violent, there’s marital rape/coerced sex (only being wishy-washy with terms to try and convey the like severity/texture of the scenes) depicted at least once and mentioned several times, though the most interesting part of the book is the nuance in MC’s relationship with her husband, how it evolves, and how this very real love grows between them despite their perpetually being at odds and his persistent, well, personality. He felt like an insightful portrayal of a very real type of man. I feel like this is NOT a compelling rec lol but you know! It’s good! Maybe in short I’d say that it depicts the time, the place, and the people without sentimentality but also not without humanity.
This actually sounds really interesting thank you for reccing! I’d never heard of it.
should not have bought two bunches of broccolini I’ll be eating it for a week smh

really good text from my sister in law
it’s weird that professional letters are supposed to start with “dear.” i don’t even call my mom that
my darling hiring manager. my springtime rose. if hired i will bring a strong work ethic to this position
if i restart reading john turner's biography of joseph turner now (i started reading it last summer and put it on indefinite pause when school started) maybe i can time to finish it on the anniversary of his assassination (june 27th)
I will say that I need to continue putting effort into reading good, serious fiction specifically though, my top monthly reads for January, March, and April have all been non-fiction despite me reading way more fiction in general. I'm reading a lot of great nonfiction at least! And it is definitely good to have some fun-but-not-that-deep fiction reads too but a) I have had some genuine misses fiction-wise this year too b) I need to challenge myself with fiction because when I do, I usually really enjoy the books. My top book of May was fiction (Rabih Alameddine's The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (And His Mother) which I absolutely loved btw go read it!) and my top book for June will probably be The Name of the Rose so my fiction reading is on an upward trajectory I guess at least.

i've been doing this like top reads of each month 2026 book bracket and i fear the mirror and the light will sweep the year...i guess the goal is to aim high and try to read something else that is so good the mirror and the light has serious competition
cromwell proposing marriage out of nowhere to wolsey's illegitimate daughter who is a literal nun is the most painful thing ive ever seen
I will say I love the Wolf Hall series’ take on Jane Seymour who is so frequently underdeveloped
first time I saw someone in Russia using mayo instead of sour cream in borscht I was shook but it actually does kind of work. I’m not eating borscht but I just put mayo on refried beans and it’s not half bad.
had the CRAZIEST dream last night where i was vacationing at a really bougie hotel somewhere in europe but people were like. living in a crawlspace in the ceiling and coming down and busting up the furniture

finished wolf hall season one and starting the second season. Part of this is obviously just what I’m used to but I feel like all the recastings are downgrades so far :(
