All the while Pokey is talking, Toffee simply gestures for Compass to move back further while turning his attention back to the device upon his wrist once again. Compass complies, and though there’s some difficulty, he moves a good distance away.
This horrible, sickening dread sinks to the bottom of his stomach at the instructions in spite of it, however. He knows what’s coming. He’s only lucky that there isn’t too many people around for it. The funniest part of it all, however, is that he’s dreading treatment which he’s both earned and most certainly deserves. But it doesn’t change how much he hates it. It doesn’t change that he hopes somehow those itching hooks sunken into his throat will malfunction and destroy him beyond repair.
All he wanted was to die.
Was it really that selfish of him?
He’s so stuck in his own mind over this that he doesn’t notice the silent leap of his shoulders or the blurriness of his vision. His hands shake violently as they press and dig into the dirt he’s seated upon for some semblance of comfort. Something at all to get him through what will happen is just fine, even if it’s only ever going to be the ground everyone walks and spits on. If he wasn’t so far, then maybe they’d see how much of a scared little kid he appears to be right now. That’s good. He doesn’t want them to see. He’s already been an embarrassment to both himself and the entire army.
“That should be good.” The Colonel says with a smile, glancing back up to Compass.
There’s that moment of finality before the effects of the regulator start to hit him. He can only hear himself screaming and writhing from a distance as the light and energy bursts outward from him to life. It’s shockingly bright, and yet brilliantly beautiful in its design. It’s almost like a dance…. of destructive, chaotic, and massive power. And it just keeps on going, this time, with the full range of the display that they’ve been looking for.
Though, Compass can’t quite understand the fascination with something so ugly and painful.
“This is the highest it can go without burning your eyes out if you don’t have proper protection.” Toffee laughs, a hand resting on his hip. A sigh. “How about that? It’s like our own little personal angel of death in our hands.”
When Pokey finally takes notice of Compass dragging himself away, his attention focuses entirely on the robot, though he looks to Toffee once or twice. Something is coming... something big. He can feel it so clearly, and so an odd feeling of excitement and near-anxiety settles in his stomach as he anticipates its beginning. Come on now, come on... show him what he wants to see. It’s a slow build, but Pokey sees some slight movements in Compass that feel like a small indication of what is to come.
At those words spoken by Toffee, Pokey’s smile widens again to wild, boundless, malicious joy. He flinches from surprise at the burst of light and power that erupts from Compass, and after that initial surprise settles, he leans slightly forward to watch the light show. It’s bright, almost too bright to watch directly, but he tries his best to keep his eyes on it, his eyelids twitching slightly. This is definitely one of the cooler things that he’s seen recently... and pretty much makes up for how Compass treated him earlier.
Pokey giggles, bringing one hand up to his face. That grin on his face starts to hurt a little, but he can’t help it. Compass is full of this amazing power-- who would have guessed that from how unassuming he often appeared? And what a great power it is to be able to manipulate it like this. To think it’ll be his some day--! That King P. is pretty lucky, despite the robot’s unpredictability sometimes. He finally draws his eyes away from Compass when Toffee speaks up again.
“It’s amazing,” Pokey replies with a nod, bouncing on his heels. “You weren’t kidding about the light show... glad I finally got to see it without him trying to ‘be good’ or whatever. He’s a strong kid-- robot? Either way. It’s just fun seeing what kinda power he can really offer.” Pokey snickers a little. Adding softly under his breath, he mumbles, “A little angel of death...” An angel of death indeed.
