Edmonton Bulletin, May 22, 1909: Baseball Comment
Transcript:
It may be an accident that the Edmonton ball team is just three places from the top and Calgary team just three from the bottom.
update from the same paper's sports column. sadly, no baseball due to the fact that Medicine Hat's team has a rain cloud following them across the province.
Transcript:
SPORTING NEWS BALL GAMES POSTPONED. There will be no baseball game this evening between Edmonton and Medicine Hat on account of the continued downpour. Billy Hamilton, manager of the Mad Hatters, is said to be the Hoodoo. His team has only played three league games so far this season. Rain followed the team at Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat, and has developed into a downpour when they came to Edmonton.
And another update from May 25:
Transcript:
The Mad Hatters went south yesterday afternoon taking the rain hoodoo with them. If they break the spell today Manager Hamilton says poor old Calgary has another severe drubbing in store for them.
We won another game against Lethbridge (reported in the May 26th issue) and once again had to drag Calgary into it:
Transcript:
They [the Edmonton baseball team] hit off a pace last evening that made the cow punchers, who were here last week, look like thirty cents...
Transcript:
And meanwhile how fares it with Calgary? Alas the predictions of the Bulletin earlier in the season are coming only too true. They have dropped down to seventh place in the league and are rather sore on Lethbridge because they will persist in keeping the bottom. All is not peace and quietness among the fans in the southern village either. Supporters of the team have been saying things under their breath for some time and gradually a few not very complimentary remarks about the team are beginning to creep into the Calgary newspapers. Being beaten by Lethbridge on Monday was the last straw...
not to worry, we have room in our schedule on May 27 to be mean to Lethbridge now:
Transcript:
The news that the coal strike in the south was settled must have been too much for their highly strung nervous system and they made a bunch of costly errors which gave the Edmonton team the game.
according to the May 28 issue, Edmonton couldn't even be bothered to show up at a high school ballgame against Strathcona because the western league was too exciting
Transcript:
A match game of baseball was to have been played on Wednesday night between the Strathcona Collegiate Institute and the Edmonton High School teams, but the excitement of the professional ball in Edmonton resulted in the game being called off.
and from May 29's Current Comment section:
Transcript:
The Edmonton ball team has moved up to second place from the top. The Calgary bunch fittingly occupy the same relative position at the other end of the list.

each issue of the Edmonton Bulletin I read I am accosted by this horrible typo in this ad

ok gang im gonna try my best to concentrate long enough to get some more exciting news from 1909. I'm pretty tired from running errands but this might be a nice break
tbh it's perfect digital art weather but im back to my mental block on that front. hoping olde timey news will help.
looking outside at the lightning and watching the rain pouring down and thinking DAMN im glad i went shopping when i did
yesterday i made some rhubarb compote for scones and some rhubarb syrup - its too cold for lemonade at the moment so im like what else do i do with this... ideas?
im also going to harvest some lilacs today to make lilac sugar with :3 i was gifted some lilac syrup earlier so im thinking of soaking some cake in it hehehahaha
i was unexpectedly surprised with a copy of Braiding Sweetgrass I'd put on hold months ago and forgotten about and it turned up coincidentally at the perfect time in my readings since I'd just finished a collection of presentations on the intersections between traditional knowledge, ecology, and healthcare.
I've heard a lot about how important and good this book is even though I hadn't really heard all that much about what it was about or whether or not it would be relevant to the work I'm doing but just having finished the first section i feel like i'm already shooing away that question about relevancy. it's relevant to me as a human living on this planet and that's more than enough in itself.
