This is a short snapshot of some of my motion graphics work done over the last 5 years at the Luis Palau Association. At Palau festivals, I was responsible for all branded graphics, loops, animations, intros, etc. Anything that wasn't live was handled by me (which is terrifying in front of a crowd of 80,000 people outside!).

What a perfect and amazing day for some fĆŗtbol! Congrats on a great season, kids!

AimHigh FitBLAST promo
Here's a short promo for a fitness class at Aim High Martial Arts, where I train. I shot it on a Canon T3i and an f2.8 lens in 60p mode - I really wanted to be able to play with time ramping smoothly. Edited in FCPX, all in one day!

Green-screen photo shoot with kids
White Balance Images:
Fun photo shoot with Trin and her friends
They wanted to shoot on green-screen, so I put them in some fun and interesting places. The girls got a real kick out of it! I thought it would be fun to put some rampaging elephants behind them, or put them deep underwater or something silly. I put Trin and her friend A. in a museum. What hams!
Itās funny; I have a solid workflow for compositing green-screen with video, but not so much with still images. I ended up doing it in Motion 5 which is fast to work with, but very slow to render for large images. Shooters: you do much of this sort of thing? What do you use for keying?
Hereās some images from the iPad āappā I built for Connorās super-secret spy-themed 10th birthday. I used Keynote for animations and sound effects, and we would āreceiveā an encoded transmission after every āmissionā we accomplished around town. Totally worked!
Decaleague iPad App Adventure Game
Some friends over at Soma Games heard about our little birthday adventure game we did with my son and his buddies. The concept was tied together with an iPad āappā from a mysterious order named The DecaLeague.
Touchpad concept: done with Keynote
The concept was really just a Keynote show playing on the iPad; this was perfect for me as I develop a ton of Keynote presentations and I know itās capabilities pretty well. Itās kind of become the new Hypercard on the iPad. While I was bummed to find some of my animations and fonts didnāt make it over (man that list is short!), the overall effect worked.
They were wondering if I would share the Keynote doc for laughs - here you go! (zip, 7mb)
The Game
I whipped it up in about two hours, including the logo design and exporting graphics for the Tumblr site (I use Keynote as a design tool all the time for mogfx & web dev). The Tumblr site and app were pretty crucial, actually (though could have been more so, given a longer game). The themed site was where the kids uploaded photos of their achievements in order to āunlockā the next challenge: after uploading, weād gather them together (āHey guys, letās see if thereās a new transmission!ā) open the iPad, and tap the screen, which would trigger the āincoming transmissionā animation and sound effect (a Starcraft sound the Internets brought me). While Iām sure the jaded preteen doubters knew what was up (my son stillā¦accepts the tooth fairy), the effect was fun and added some suspense.
What I liked was the blend of high-tech and physical, high adventure; we wanted kind of a spy theme throughout. At the end they had to collect flour bombs and run a dark forest gauntlet of cousins, pelting them with marshmallows and flour bombs Ć” la The Patriot. They assaulted a bit fast (who wouldnāt?) so we didnāt get the full effect, but boy, they sure loved the finale!
Future Possibilities
I could see some interestingĀ opportunitiesĀ here. Adventure trials like the Spartan Race and Tough Mudder are waxing popular, as well as orienteering and geocaching; the geo-location, light weight and media features of mobile devices could come together into a really fun, interactive, physical group experience. As a lifetime gamer, social geek and lover of physical adventure, it would be very interesting to see these movements come together.
Would love to hear what you think!

Go Glam Promo
This promo was challenging - the footage was shot by someone else (who was, ah, new to DSLR video, and no audio experience). However, I was able to juuuust barely make this happen with the right music and tight edits. I really love FCPXās new stabilizer, itās very effective if simplified (itās no Resolve or After Effects).
Compassion First āHoly Nightā Promo
For this promo, Iām most pleased with the intro work I did. The color grade, spare typography and haunting, echoing audio set the stage for a chilling backstory - they help girls who work the sex trade in a cemetery. If thatās not the backbone of a movie, I donāt know what is.
As with other work, the story doesnāt end there - thereās hope for these people. Go to CompassionFirst.org today to find out how you can help.
"Little Victories" (Piano Girl)
While working on another project for Compassion First, which helps girls escape sex slavery in Indonesia, I came across this video clip. To hear this girl play a pop song on the piano spoke so much to me about how far she had come in a single year.
When doing work for non-profits, I like to focus on the stories that have hope, that communicate joy; that there is a solution or at least some improvement amongst all the awful things this world contains.
After finishing the other project, I grabbed the clip, ran a stabilizer on it (tricky with the panning movement), a quick color grade, then developed some copy that I hoped would communicate the story (the backstory is essential here).
Quick and easy, but I had to jump on the opportunity.
Iāve just wrapping the blizzard of producing & shooting an event on Atlanta, absorbing a firehose of amazing and profound speakers, musicians, artists, and tiring cross-country travel. Iām telling myself Iām not tired, and only half believing it!
Up ahead, this weekend looks to be one of our...
City Transformation Leaders Series
This video is the first in a series of curriculum for Christian city leaders. While the content is simple, the subject was shot on a green screen and composited on a subtle, high-key background. Spare typography was added to emphasize and organize some of the instructional content. Edited in Final Cut Pro X as nested multiclips (two angles).
