Work on the Jack Ilfrey video for my YouTube channel is progressing slowly. Here are a couple of images as a teaser. I struggled to find a hook for the story until I realised it was the Wingmen connection that gave us an insight into Ilfrey's true life story.
I'm on the hunt for JJ Belanger, a Canadian airman who served with the RAF in the 1940s. He's now a poster boy for young gay love in the 1950s. And who would deny him that accolade?
His papers and photos are archived in the ONE Archives at the USC Libraries in Los Angeles. If you live in LA and fancy a day rummaging through the remnants of his life - message me!

Calling all amateur sleuths. I need help with my research into the life of Happy Jack Ilfrey.
Ilfrey was very closeted during his life but did reveal to Chris Case that his life had much in common with Jack and Fred. Sadly, Ilfrey never felt able to go public about his sexuality during his lifetime.
Apparently his close friend Beck Woodrow Wilkinson, aka Becky or Woody, ran a business together in San Antonio. After Ilfrey's death a "Mrs" BW Wilkinson donated Ilfrey's dress service coat to the national museum of the USAF. I'm wondering if any Wingmen fans have access to newspaper records from San Antonio for the period 1945-2005 as these may give some extra insight into Ilfrey's and Wilkinson's relationship when they returned to civilian life in San Antonio.

Gleed's bio is complex and poorly documented, but there is sufficient information to assemble a coherent narrative.

The first batch will be Narven Christensen (USAAF), Ian "Widge" Gleed (RAF), and Christopher Gotch (RAF).
The next phase of the project will be American and Canadian airmen. I welcome suggestions for potential candidates.

I was honored to count Narven "Chris" Christensen as a friend from 1990 until his death in 2002. Chris served with the 91st Bomb Group 401st Bomb Squadron as a ball turret gunner on the B17 Flying Fortress. Beats me how he managed to squeeze his 6' lanky frame into a ball turret, but needs must in war. Chris was proud to serve his country and proud to be a gay veteran. So many men like Chris served their country but dared not speak the truth of their lives. It's our duty to preserve and honour their memory.
Captain Jack "Happy Jack" Ilfrey 1920-2004. Check out the swastikas on the side of his plane. He was shot down twice but evaded capture and returned to his squadron. In the final decade of his life he confirmed to Christopher Case that his life paralleled the story of Jack and Fred in Wingmen, but sadly he had never felt able to be open with his family or peers. His autobiography "Happy Jack's Go Buggy" arrived in the post today. I can't wait to dive into it.

Hello, I enjoyed reading the book, and I can understand why it appealed to a generation of American men who had some collective memory of WW2. Ensan Case clearly invested a lot of effort to embed historical accuracy to his description of CAG operations and shipboard life on the aircraft carriers. Nonetheless, I was hoping to find more character development in the novel. The penultimate chapter and the epilogue are by far the most moving and insightful chapters, but I feel sad that Case condemned Fred and Jack to such a closeted existence in the post war years. Yes, most "gay" war veterans were shunned and disowned by society in the US in the post war years, but many embraced their gay identity in the 1970s when Case was writing Wingmen. I have fond memories of meeting ex-service men in the 1990s in the US who had offered two fingers to the arbiters of respectability and embraced a gay lifestyle as a result of the gay civil rights movement in the 1960s.
I suppose I should add that the book is now a treasured possession. A little trivia: the cover shows the book sold for $2.50 in 1979; a second edition copy is currently for sale from an Amazon trader for ÂŖ1,500. I shan't be selling.

Hello, I have only recently discovered the story of Jack Ilfrey, and am eagerly awaiting the delivery of a 1st edition paperback copy of Wingmen that I sourced in a bookshop in London. I am researching the lives of WW2 airmen in the UK, US, Canada, and Australia. I wondered if you know what became of Christopher "Ensan" Case? I can find no bibliographic information on him after 2015 (the GLBTQ archive letter). All the best, Allan

Unfortunately, there has been no recent news about Ensan Case. In 2015, Case announced on his website (which has since been taken down) that he was finishing writing a Wingmen spin-off novel, which he planned to release the following year. He was active online at the time but has since gone radio silent.
At this point, I think it wouldn't be inappropriate to say he probably passed away shortly after that. I have had no success in trying to find any other information about him; in fact, I don't even know his full actual name.

I also assumed this may have been his fate. It is a sad loss, but he has left an amazing legacy. I believe his birth name was Christopher, but I can't confirm the source of this information. As his birth date is known, perhaps someone with access to public records in the US could determine his date and place of death.
I find it unsettling that our flimsy knowledge of the lives of men like Jack Ilfrey and Ian Gleed rely on sheer serendipity - a passing anecdote; an unexpected correspondence. I feel duty bound to bring their stories to life.
