Maureen adored Alina. So when she’d gotten a text asking to get a drink, even if it wasn’t something she did - and was fairly certain it wasn’t something either of them did regularly, but she certainly wasn’t going to turn down a chance to spend time with a friend. It had been far too long - though, whenever she didn’t see Alina for even a week it felt like too long. She’d arrived early - typical for her, and even more typical when she was going to be in a situation where she sometimes felt like she needed more time to get comfortable. Not too long after, she spotted her friend arriving and her expression brightened. “Alina!” She matched her friend’s grin with one of her own.

“Oh gee, you’re already going to make me talk about myself?” She raised an eyebrow, ever at-ease with conversation with the other woman. “Work’s been busy, as to be expected, Halloween was lovely - I went as Juliet, from the 1996 Romeo + Juliet,” she scrolled through photos on her phone and turned it around, showing Alina, “there’s the costume in case you didn’t see my Instagram post. How about you? It’s been far too long, I agree.”

          Alina liked hanging around people. Honestly, she had a lot of fun when she was surrounded by all sorts of people, getting to know them. While she didn’t really drink at bars, she loved the atmosphere of them, even though she could hear her grandfather’s words of warning that girls like her didn’t need to be hanging in bars. Still, the cop bars weren’t awful places to hang and she couldn’t afford a huge meal out to catch up with Maureen. “Hey!” she exclaimed, a wide smile on her face. She tossed her hair over her shoulder and took a seat beside her friend. She was thankful the other was in the same boat as her, missing their friendship. 

          “Well, I’m sure you’ve got more interesting things going on in your life than I do in mine,” she giggled. Personally, she didn’t have much to talk about because she felt like she’d been so focused on school and work these last few weeks that she didn’t have time for herself. Even her grandparents were worried about her. “Yeah, I saw on Insta! You were so pretty. The costume really suited you.” Alina thought for a moment to think of anything she could talk about. “Honestly, I’ve just been working. I know. I’m boring, but what else is there to do?” 

          Alina had texted Maureen earlier to grab a drink with her. She felt like she’d been so busy lately, she hadn’t gotten a chance to see her friend at all lately and it was time to remedy that. This was her favorite bar for the most part, not that she was much of a drinker. As she walked in, she spotted her friend and walked over, ignoring everyone else she knew here, since the majority of the people in here were cops. Alina was here on a mission, and that mission did not mean getting distracted by people she recognised and talking to them for hours about random work things that could be taken care of when she was not trying to have fun. 

          “Maureen!” she exclaimed, a grin on her face. The blonde took a seat on one of the tall chairs in front of her. “Give me all the gossip happening in Maureen-ville. I feel like it’s been forever since I’ve seen you.”

“First and foremost, whatever it is you’ve heard, we’re not talking about Halloween right now,” or ever. Nevermind that he had crossed path with colleagues that night, he did after he had lost a bet and ended up near naked in the street with dear Silje. “Lesson learned, I’m never ever doing bets again,” taking off his jacket, and only his jacket this time, thank God, the detective threw it over the back of a chair, dropping the take out bag he brought along on the table.

“What’s the weather like in the pretty field today?” The expression had surpassed How are you many years ago already.

“I’m starving. We’ve been digging up bo-degas. Yes, bodegas,” on the one hand, she worked for the NYPD, on the other, he tried not to talk about corpses over lunch. The only people who were okay with it worked forensics or were probably not completely lawful.

          Alina eyed him at his initial statement. “I wasn’t going to bring it up, but now that you did, are you sure you don’t want to talk about it?” she teased, a smile on her face. They were trying to forget that night. While she didn’t claim to be innocent, that was the closest she’d been to an almost completely naked man in her life. “Maybe the lesson is that you should only do bets that you know you can win.” Of course that defeated the purpose of them in the first place, but she couldn’t help the playful tone in her voice as she spoke. 

          “It’s always a bright sunny day around here!” she answered the question. “What about you? Any fun new stories you can tell me about?” She knew most of the cases the police worked on couldn’t be spoken about, even to her, but Alina was curious. 

          The blonde listened to his story, wrinkling her nose. “Digging up? Nevermind, I don’t think I want to know.” While she heard some really strange stuff over the phone and wasn’t easily grossed out by policework, there were some things they just didn’t want to listen to during mealtimes. “I could go for some lunch though. Better than sitting here playing games on my phone.”
